TOPIC: Indicate dimensions of the roof plan based on the floor plan

LEARNING CODE
COMPETENCY: Draft roof plan
TLE_ICTTD9-12AL-IIa-c-5

1. Define dimensions line and extension line;

LEARNING
OBJECTIVES:
2. Follow the steps in drafting roof plan with indicated dimensions;
3. Draft roof plan based on a given floor plan.
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the learner’s activity and
assessment sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
Dimension Line: it is a line that is light in wight which is usually used 4h to 6h pencil to indicate the
dimension size of an object there are arrow heads that terminate at the extension line. It has a broken
space in the middle to indiate the numerical value or actual size of an object.

Extentsion Lines: are also light lines in weight that show the drawing limits.

In actual working drawing, dimensions and descriptions are very important as these makes
the drawing easy to interpret and analyze. Drafting roof plans also requires accurate information and
detailed specification for laborers and engineers easy to install.

In this lesson we will focus more on how to indicate dimensions on roof plan properly as well
as its procedure on how to draft roof plan.

Steps in Constructing/drafting the roof

1. From the given scaled floor plan, draw or traced the given plan in a form of hidden line. Make
sure that you are using the same scale used in the floor plan.
2. From the end of the floor plan extend 1. 00 m. outwards as this serves as the eave line or
overhang of the roof.
3. Extend .20 M. along the eave line/ roof line for the gutter and along with it, a .10 m. circular
hole to indicate and identify the positions of the down spout.
4. Select the roof style or roof type to be used, if gable roof style locate the centre and project line
along the eave lines.
5. If hip roof or hip-valley roof, used 45° angle along the four corner of the eave lines intersecting
2|P a g e
along the centre to create hip. From the drawn hip, draw .10 m. on each side as this
represents the width of the ridge roll
6. Indicate the slope of the roof by showing the position of the slope as seen on the given
example.
7. Draw thin or light line as this symbolizes the roof covering materials used for the structure.
8. Finalize the drawing by placing the dimensions, labels and specific notes if necessary.

SAQ-1: Does roofing affect the design of the structure? Explain.

SAQ-2: Is it important to place gutters along the roofline? Explain.

Let’s Practice!
To find out how much you have learned from our lesson, draft the Roof Plan based on a given floor
plan using drawing or bond paper.

Instruction:
1. Set up the drawing area, tools, instruments, materials and equipment needed for the task.
2. Construct the Border Line and Title block. Fill in all the necessary information.
3. Draft Roof Plan
 Follow the given guide/ steps in designing the roof plan
4. Specify what roofing materials to be used, choose your own desired roof style based on the
previous topic
5. Sketch the architectural symbol for roofing with your own choice of style.
6. Indicate the dimensions properly and specify construction notes if necessary.
7. Use 1: 100 M. Scale

3|P a g e
Key Points

 In drafting roof plan, one must remember the following:

A. The basis for laying-out the roof plan is based on the floor plan.

B. Use light pencils to start with the drawing.

C. Make sure that the paper and the T-square are parallel as this will not cause minor
problems on the layout.

D. Architectural symbols must be done neatly for precision and accuracy.

TRY
Let’s see how much have you learned today!
Directions: Read the questions carefully and understand. Write your answer on the separate
sheet of paper.

___________1. What is the suggested dimension of the eave line from the wall?

___________2. What is the suggested measurement of the gutter line has a measurement from the
eave line

___________3. The suggested thickness of the wall.

___________4. Light lines in weight that show the drawing limits.

4|P a g e
___________5. In drafting roof plan, what is the basis of our drawing?

___________6. What tool or instrument should we use when sketching 45 degree lines for hip roof?

___________7. A light line that is used to show the size of a drawing or an object.

___________8. To sketch light lines, what pencil grade should be used?

___________9. The word D.S. is also known as what?

___________10. What is the suggested measurement of the D.S.?
