Project offsets from the right, left and rear side of the floor plan
TOPIC:
according to architectural drafting standard
LEARNING CODE
COMPETENCY: Draft Elevations and Sections
TLE_ICTD9-12AL-IIg-i-7

1. Define elevation projections;

LEARNING
OBJECTIVES: 2. Differentiate between elevation drawings and sectional drawings;
3. Draw the right, left and rear elevations.
IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the learner’s activity and
assessment sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
Elevation Projection
Elevation projection drawings are projected from the floor plan of an architectural drawing just
as the views are projected the front view of an orthographic drawing. All six views are rarely used to
depict architectural structures, instead only four are used. These four elevations are normally
projected on the floor plan.

Elevation Dimensioning

Dimensions on elevation show the vertical distance from a datum line, which is a reference line that
remains constant. Dimensions on elevation show the height above the datum or the ground line.
Dimensioning elevations must conform to basic standards to ensure consistency of interpretation.

Here are some of the rules in dimensioning:

1. Vertical elevation dimensions should be read from the right of the drawing.
2. Levels to be dimensioned should label with a note, term or abbreviation.
3. Room heights are shown by dimensioning from the floor line to the ceiling line.
4. The depth of footings (“footer”) is dimensioned from the ground line.
5. Heights of windows and doors are dimensioned from the floor plan to the top of windows or doors.
6. Elevation dimensions show only vertical distances (height). Horizontal distances (length and width)
are shown on the floor plan.
7. Windows and doors may be indexed to a door or window schedule, or the style of the windows and
doors may be shown on the elevation drawing.
8. The roof pitch is shown by indicating the rise over the run.
9. Dimensions for small, complex or obscure areas should be indexed to a separate detail.
10. Ground-line elevations are expressed as heights above a datum point.
11. Heights of chimneys above the ridge line are dimensioned.
12. Floor and ceiling lines are shown with hidden lines.
13. Heights of planters and walls are dimensioned from the ground line.
14. Thickness of slabs is dimensioned.
15. Overall height dimensions are placed on the outside of sub-dimensions.
16. Thickness of footings is dimensioned.
17. Where space is limited, the alternative method in used to show feet and inches.

Steps in Designing the Elevation

1. To get started, you must begin by taping you floor plan on top of your drawing paper. Note that
the scale of your elevation and your floor plan is the same.
2. With this method you will transfer each feature on the front face of the house to the other sheet
of paper. This is called the orthographic projection method.
3. Determine the height of the following;
a. Hieght of the G.L. (grade line) to the F.F.L.( finish floor line)
b. Hieght of the F.F.L.( finish floor line) to C. L. (ceiling line)
c. Hieght of the C. L. (ceiling line) to the B. L. (beam Line)
d. Hieght of the b. L. (ceiling line) to the Top of Apex Roof or Top of Ridge.
4. Determine the position of the Doors and Windows and project it to other paper. Determining
the hieght of doors and windows is neccesarry.
a. Hieght of the doors should not be less than 2.10 M. as stated in the national building code
of the Philippines.
b. Hieght of the windows varies from each purpose as the windows located at the toilet and
bathroom should be less that the hieht of the average window. Typical window hieght is
1.20 M.
3|P a g e
5. Drawing the roof should also be based on the roof plan, droping the slope of roof where it
connects to the wall.
6. Show the details of each features that can be seen on each elevation, this include the
architectural styles of doors, windows, decks, wall and others.
7. Indicate the dimensions, notes and materials used in elevation.
8. Finalize the plan.

SAQ-1: Drafting elevation requires projection, what are the specific tools needed?
SAQ-2: What is the relationship between elevation drawings and sectional drawings?

Let’s Practice!

To find out how much you have learned from our lesson, sketch the given drawing with prescribe
height measurement for elevations in reference for ceiling plan.

Instruction: use separate answer sheet.

1. Set the drawing tools, materials and equipment needed for the task.
2. Sketch the border line and title block; fill in all the information needed.
3. Use 4h as guide pencil for construction line and HB pencil to finalize the lines.
4. Set the metric scale into 1: 100 meters.
5. Centre the drawing.
6. Set the floor plan parallel to your drawing
7. Project the lines base on the given drawing
8. Use the given measurement appropriate to the elevation.
9. Submit the drawing.

4|P a g e
REMEMBER
Key Points

 In drafting elevation, one must remember the following:

A. Set the tools properly as this will not give you problem during layout.

B. Make sure, that the floor plan and elevation is parallel.

C. Projections on elevation make drawings and layout easy to draft.

D. Rotate the floor plan for easy to use.

TRY
Let’s see how much have you learned today!
Directions: Read the questions carefully and understand. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.

___________1. To project lines vertical what instrument or tool should be used.

___________2. An architectural working drawing that shows the side of something.
___________3. How many elevations are there based on the floor plan?
___________4. In drafting elevation where do we get the reference of the roof design?
___________5. This shows the vertical distance from a datum line, which is a reference line that
remains constant.
___________6. The distance of the eave line from the wall line.
___________7. The suggested vertical height from ceiling line to beam line.
___________8. What is the vertical height of a single door?
___________9. What is the vertical height of a typical window?
___________10. Projected from the floor plan of an architectural drawing just as the views are
projected
