Vortec 1600
TM

A very efficient engine that offers proven

performance in a compact package.

The Vortec 1600 engine from GM’s Sao

Jose engine plant in Brazil is the smallest
displacement engine that GM Powertrain
has supplied in over a decade.

• Designed to use gasoline, propane gas and • V-belt and Poli-V-belt harmonic balancers are available
natural gas
• Propane and natural gas engines utilize a dry fuel
• Hardened valve seat inserts to maintain excellent version of the PFI manifold (the same basic design as
performance when using alternative fuels the PFI gasoline manifold, but without throttle body and
fuel parts)
• Single overhead cam valvetrain optimizes
performance and efficiency • Pistons have high silicon content for improved durability
and noise reduction
• Crank-triggered, waste spark ignition system
utilizes the coil pack, crankshaft position sensor • Exhaust manifold heat shield reduces radiated heat to
and available ECM for accurate spark timing nearby components
• World-class engine sealing system for superior
leak protection

optional gasoline port fuel
injection system.

Available Options
• An Electronic Control Module (ECM) for
optimizing fuel (gasoline only) and spark
requirements
• Gasoline port fuel injection that precisely
meters fuel

Vortec™ Engines: Uncompromised Power
Vortec Engines are GM Powertrain's premier engine line for trucks and
SUVs. Motorsports events and on-the-job performance have proven
that Vortec Engines deliver outstanding power with no sacrifice in fuel
efficiency.
Equally important to industrial engine users is the fact that Vortec
Engines are designed to require very little maintenance while providing
extraordinary reliability.

ignition system uses a crankshaft
position sensor, coil pack and
available ECM to replace the distributor
and coil used in conventional ignition
systems, so servicing of distributor OEM Badge Area
caps and rotors is eliminated.
Crankshaft position is determined
directly from the crankshaft, for
improved accuracy, and the OEM-
established spark timing cannot be
changed by end users.

The Vortec 1600 engine has a removable badge on top where OEMs can
place their own identifying badge.
