Assignment 13

Transformations of Functions

NOTE: Do not leave this until the night before. Please write detailed solutions, written using correct
notation, as you would in an examination. You are not just being judged by your answers.

Please print out the appendices

1
1. For the functions (i) f ( x) = 2 x and (ii) f ( x) = , find in simplest form:
x

1
(a) f (- x) (b) f ( x) (c) 2 f ( x - 1) + 2
2

2. The graph of y = g (x) is given graphed below.

Using the appendix draw the following functions

on the 5 separate graphs

(i) y = g ( x) + 4

(ii) y = g ( x + 2)

(iii) y = g (- x)

(iv) y = - g (x)

(v) y = g (2 x + 2) .

3. (a) Find the function y = g (x) that results when transforming the reciprocal function,
1 2
f ( x) = by: a translation of ! $
x 0
then a stretch of scale factor ½ in an x-direction

then a stretch of scale factor 5 in a y-direction

0
then a translation of ! $

(b) Find the equations of the horizontal and vertical asymptotes of g(x).

(c) Sketch the graph (do it first without a graphical calculator and use your calculator
to check the result- remember you have to be able to do this in the non-calculator exam). Remember
to label axes with its intercepts and label the asymptotes.

4. The diagram shows the graph of f (x).

1
(a) On the diagram in the appendix, sketch the graph of , indicating clearly any
f ( x)
asymptotes.

minimum point, the x-intercepts and the y-intercept of .

5. The diagram shows parts of the graphs of y = x2 and y = 5 – 3(x – 4)2.

The graph of y = x2 is transformed into the graph of y = 5 – 3(x – 4)2 by these

transformations:

A reflection in the line y = 0,

then a vertical stretch with scale factor k,
then a horizontal translation of p units,
then a vertical translation of q units.

Write down the value of

(a) k;

(b) p;

(c) q.

6. The graph of y = f (x) is shown in the diagram.

(b) The point A (3, –1) is on the graph of f. The point A¢ is the corresponding point on
the graph of y = –f (x) + 1. Find the coordinates of A¢.

(b) Write down the equations of the horizontal and vertical asymptotes.

(c) Find the axes intercepts.

(d) Sketch the graph of the function.

1 2𝑥 + 1
(e) Describe the transformations which map onto
𝑥 3−𝑥
(You should write them in the correct order as well- there is more than one solution).
