RC QuadRotor Basics

The document discusses the history of quadrotors starting from 1923. It then covers the basic working, construction elements, propeller selection, thrust calculation, motor selection and building process of quadrotors. Some problems faced during building like breakage of propeller blades and interference from noise are also mentioned.

History

1.De Bothezat Quadrotor, 1923.

In this quadrotor there are 6 rotors.

4 rotors Lift 2 rotors Thrust and yaw Control.

They tested it 100 times and max altitude it flew was 5m.

History
Etienne Oehmichen,1924

It had 4 rotors and 8 propellers It reached 360m and later 1km with closed circuit flight.

History
Convertawings, 1956

Had four rotors

Run by two engines

During forward flight the wings help in producing lift

Building of Quad Rotor

Basic working of Quad Rotor

Lifting Increase in Throttle will increase the altitude

by increasing the RPM of all motors with same magnitude.

Yawing

Pitching

Rolling

Construction Elements
Carbon Fibre Sticks Motor Mount Brushless DC Motors Propellers Electronic Speed Controller Transmitter 2.4 GHz Receiver

Propeller Selection
Propeller thrust depends on the propeller pitch, rpm

and the diameter Propeller Pitch

Thrust Calculation
Thrust is calculated by the formula

Thrust(N) = P x D^3 x RPM^2 x 0.27801385 x 10^-10 where P- Propeller pitch D Propeller Diameter RPM revolutions per minute
And a suitable diameter is taken

Motor Selection
Motor is selected according to the RPM that is

calculated to give the required thrust.

It has kv ratio by which the output rpm is found
RPM = kv ratio X Battery Voltage

Building
X structure is made and motor mount are fixed at 4

ends.
And Motors are placed with the rotor blades. Two rotors rotate in Clockwise and other two in anti-

clockwise to counteract the torque.

Circuit diagram

Problems Faced
Breakage of propeller blades as there were no guard for

the rotors. Noise may cause some error in the receiver lead to some variations in behaviour of the aircraft. So no other high frequency waves shouldnot be generated inside . Positive , negative connections should be given correctly.
