Archimedes’ Principle
Archimedes’ Principle- or principle of buoyancy, states that when a body is placed in a static fluid, it is buoyed
up by a force that is equal to the weight of the fluid that is displaced by the body, discovered by the Greek
Scientist Archimedes. The point where the buoyant force acts is called the center of buoyancy coinciding with
the center of gravity of the volume of fluid displaced.

Sample Problems:
1. A flat-bottomed boat has vertical sides and a bottom surface area of 0.75 𝑚2 . It floats in water such that its
draft (depth below the surface) is 0.3 m. Determine the mass of the boat. What is the draft when a 50-kg man
stands in the center of the boat?
