• When Filipinos can no longer resist the abuses of the Spaniards, little by little they started propaganda to reveal the wrong doings of both the church and the colonial government. • “PROPAGANDA” refers to the movement intended to inform the Spaniards in the Peninsula of actual situations in the Philippines in concluding half of the 19th century. FILIPINO PROPAGANDISTS MARCELO H. DEL PILAR • Born in Cupang , Bulacan on August 30 , 1850, a writer, lawyer, journalist and a free mason. His pen name was Plaridel. Marcelo’s parents were Don Julian del Pilar, an excellent Tagalog grammarian, speaker and poet. Dona Blasa Gatmaytan , known as Blasica. Don Julian was three times gobernadorcillo of the pueblo of Bulacan. • He became the Editor-in-Chief of the Propaganda newspaper La Solidaridad. • He was also known as the Father of Freemasonry and Journalism in the Philippines. • Marcelo H. Del Pilar died on July 4,1896, a few days before the Cry of Pugad Lawin. JOSE P. RIZAL • From Calamba Laguna, Jose was born on June 19,1861 and died on Decemeber 30, 1896 in Bagumbayan, Manila. • Rizal published his first novel, Noli me Tangere • Second novel was the El Filibusterismo • He served as the leading spokesperson of the Philippine reform movement in Spain. • He also published an annonated edition of Antonio Morga’s . • He contributed numerous articles to the newspaper, La Solidaridad, published in Spain. • One of Rizal’s political plans was to integrate the Philippines as a province of Spain. • Rizal returned to the Philippines in June 26 1892. • He founded the La Liga Filipina, in Manila. • The Spanish authorities exiled him in Dapitan, Zamboanga Del Norte from JULY 17,1892 TO JULY 31, 1896. JUAN LUNA • He was born in Badoc, Ilocos Norte on October 23,1857. • Juan Luna was an artist and a political activist during the Spanish colonization in the Philippines. • Recognized as the First Filipino artist. He won gold and Silver Medal in the 1884 Madrid Fine Arts Exposition. • His paintings contain themes of one shouting to Spain and to the world about the Filipino whom the Spaniards called as Indios and that a barbarian can dominate and paint than their Spanish colonizers. Felix Resurrection Hidalgo • He was born on February 21 , 1855 in Binondo Manila and Died on March 13, 1913. • He was also an artist • He was also known as one of the great Filipino painters of the late 19th century. • He won the silver medal in the 1884 Madrid Exposition of Fine Arts. GRACIANO LOPEZ JAENA • He was a native of Jaro, Ilo-Ilo and was born on December 18,1856, he died January 20,1896 at the age of 39. • He was also known for addressing the injustices that occurred amongst the Filipino people. • His first attempt at addressing problems in local society was through a story entitled Fray Botod. • Jaena was know to publish a number of literary works that challenged the status quo. • One of his most popular works included the La Solidaridad, which was a newspaper that played a very significant part in the propaganda movement that helped lead to the Philippine Revolution. MARIANO PONCE • He was a doctor by profession and one of the leaders of the movement that spread the idea of Philippine independence from Spanish colonial rule. • He wrote in the newspaper and was one among the founders of La Solidaridad and Asociation Hispano-Filipino • Some of his works were Efemerides Filipinas, a column on historical events in the Philippines which appeared in La Oceania Espanola and El Ideal. • He also wrote Ang Wika at Lahi , a discussion on the importance of a national language. DR.PIO VALENZUELA • He was the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper of the Katipunan entitled Kalayaan. • He was born in Bulacan on June 11,1869 and died on April 1965. • He was a physician and a strong revolutionary leader. • At the age of 23, he joined the Katipunan-the organization he believed to start the independence of the Philippines from the Spanish rule. • They organized the secret chamber of the society called Camara Reina ( with Andres Bonifacio and Emilio Jacinto . He went to Dapitan where Dr. Rizal was exiled and tried to convince him to join the revolutionary movement they planned.
