1. Proper gowning procedures are important in cleanrooms to prevent contamination from particles like skin oils, hair, and dust.
2. Gowning involves putting on a bunny suit, booties, face mask, and gloves before entering the cleanroom.
3. When leaving, the reverse procedure is followed by carefully removing gear and disposing of contaminated items to maintain cleanroom standards.

UNIT 5
PROPER GOWNING PROCEDURES
OBJECTIVES • Define the term “gowning”.
• Explain the importance of observing proper
gowning procedures.
• Explain the proper gowning procedures.
INTRODUCTION • A cleanroom is a controlled environment where products are manufactured. • Frequently found in electronics, pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical device industries and other critical manufacturing environments. INTRODUCTION • A room in which the concentration of airborne particles is controlled to specified limits. • Eliminating sub-micron airborne contamination is really a process of control. • These contaminants are generated by people, process, facilities and equipment. INTRODUCTION • Contaminants must be continually removed from the air. • The level to which these particles need to be removed depends upon the standards required. • Strict procedures should be followed whenever entering or cleaning a cleanroom. • Compromise is not acceptable when cleaning in a cleanroom. REASONS FOR GOWNING • To keep the clean room free of contamination. The human body is a bad contaminate for: – Microelectronics – Particles and dirt – Dead skin from your body – Hair particles – Skin oils – Pollen, dust, moisture from your breath REASONS FOR GOWNING • As a protection from hazardous materials in the Clean Room; • Some protection from dangerous chemicals; • Protection of clothing from chemical stains. PROPER GOWNING PROCEDURES 1. Before entering the gowning room 2. On entering the gowning room 3. Leaving the cleanroom PROPER GOWNING PROCEDURES

Sign in before entering
the cleanroom Entering the cleanroom LEAVING THE CLEANROOM • Clean up yourself. Leave stations neat and ready for the next person to use. • Remove personal items from general-use areas after you are done processing. • Any materials you plan on taking out of the lab with you should be placed in the pass-box • In the gowning room: • Remove your booties first and dispose the blue shoe covers if you are wearing them. LEAVING THE CLEANROOM • Remove the bunnysuit by unzipping it. Keep the sleeves, main body, and as much of the suit as possible, off the floor. • Place the cleanroom booties and the bunnysuit back to where they belong in the hanger. • Dispose gloves, face mask, shoe cover and bouffant head cap. • Wear the slippers left by you at the gowning area entrance. • Remember to remove these slippers in their rack and to wear your shoes/slippers before leaving the lab.
