Background
Plant require water and air for its survival
Water is given to plants naturally by rain fall and floods
Natural irrigation is very unreliable:
heavy floods water scarcity
so the science of storing water during floods and using it prudently during
normal days to grow food and generate electricity is called irrigation
KHURAM SALEEM 3
Definition
The science of artificial application of water to the land in accordance with the
‘crop requirements’ throughout the ‘crop period’ for full fledged nourishment of
crops.

Advantages
1. increase in food production
2. no mixed cropping
3. general prosperity
4. hydropower generation
5. domestic water supply
6. communication
7. afforestation

Mixed cropping, hydropwer, domestic
water supply to nearby city, canal roads

Disadvantages
1. Ground water pollution (nitrates)
2. Salinity
3. Damp climate (malaria, dengue etc.)
4. expensive

Types of irrigation

Surface irrigation 2 types:
(i) Flow irrigation (Gravity irrigation)

Flow irrigation 2 types
1. Perennial Irrigation
It is round the clock irrigation or almost round the year. In it
constant and continuous water supply is assured to crops.
2. Flood Irrigation
It is heavy and nonstop irrigation done in the form of a flood but
for a very short interval of time. The point to be noted is that it is unguaranteed.
Besides, it can sustain only minor crops like fodder, pea, some vegetables etc.

Perennial Irrigation 2 types
a) Direct irrigation
When water is used directly by diverting the river flow by barrage or simple
weir.
b) Storage irrigation
When water is first stored and then used for irrigation.

Sub surface irrigation 2 types
(i) Natural subsurface irrigation
The underground irrigation
done by seepage from reservoirs and unlined canals.
