5S Implementation in QA Function

This document discusses the 5S methodology for organizing and standardizing a workplace. It describes each of the 5S's - Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. Implementing 5S results in benefits like increased productivity, fewer defects, on-time deliveries, and safety. The presentation provides examples of how to practice each S, such as separating needed and unneeded items, ensuring everything has a logical place, cleaning regularly, instituting reviews, and developing discipline. Keys to success include getting everyone involved, communicating clearly, fully establishing the 5S's, and using them as a foundation for further improvements.

What is 5S???
 It is work place organization method that use list of 5
japanese word viz.
Seiri - Sort
Seiton - Set in order
Seiso - Shine/Clean
Seiketsu- Standardize
Shitsuke- Sustain
The “5S” Approach

Some simple facts

 A neat & clean factory will give higher productivity.
 A neat & clean factory will turn out fewer defective products.
 A neat & clean factory will make more on-time deliveries.
1 S - Seiri = Sort
 Item Needed or Not Needed?
 When was item last used and how frequently it is used?
 Who use it and does it really needs to be here?

Practicing - 1 S
 Separate needed items from unneeded items.
 Move out the unneeded items.
 Throw out whatever is really not needed.
 Indicate maximum and minimum quantity of items an also indicate
where, what type of item clearly.
2 S - Seiton = Set in Order.
 Orderliness means organizing the way we keep necessary things, making it easier for
anyone to find and use them. This in turn helps in understanding the order of things in
the workplace.
 Signboard strategy is a visible orderliness method which helps everyone know where
things go and thus helps in smooth operations.

Practicing - 2S
 Observe current arrangements. Is it logical, planned, efficient?
 Ensure a place for everything and everything in its place.
 Ensure that the arrangements are based on well thought out plan.
 Make orderliness a habit.
3 S - Seiso = Shine / Cleanliness
 Cleanliness means sweeping floors clean and keeping things tidy.
 This is the type of cleanliness most people like to maintain in their own
houses. However we do not adopt the same standards of cleanliness in a
public and workplace. Cleanliness in workplace is closely related to ability
to turn out quality products .

Practising - 3 S
 Take pride in your workplace. It reflects your image.
 Do not wait until things get dirty, regular cleaning prevents things
becoming dirty.
 Put aside 3 minutes every day to clean your workplace.
 Contribute to maintaining cleanliness by not throwing things around.
4 S - Seiketsu = Standardize
 Cleaned up means that the first 3 S’s (Seiri, Seiton, & Seiso) are being
maintained. It does not refer to an activity but to a state.
 Cleaned up is what we get when we perform cleanliness consistently
over a period of time. Seiketsu helps in fructifying the earlier efforts.

Practicing - 4 S
 Maintain a high standard of housekeeping at workplace at all times.
 Do not let your earlier efforts go in vain.
 Institute periodic reviews.
 Use visual control effectively.
5 S - Shitsuke = Sustain / Discipline
 Discipline means making a steady habit of properly maintaining correct
procedures. The time and effort involved in establishing proper
arrangements will go in vain if we do not have discipline to maintain
them.
 The seeds of workplace discipline should be planted by the leaders
who should be themselves committed to discipline.

Practicing - 5 S
 Remember that with the value of your efforts you are creating a positive
image of yourself and your organization.
 Treat your workplace as your own.
 Develop and maintain healthy attitude and habits.
 Maintain punctuality, discipline individual efficiency.
5 S - Shitsuke = Discipline
 Discipline means making a steady habit of properly maintaining correct
procedures. The time and effort involved in establishing proper
arrangements will go in vain if we do not have discipline to maintain
them.
 The seeds of workplace discipline should be planted by the leaders
who should be themselves committed to discipline.

Practicing - 5 S
 Remember that with the value of your efforts you are creating a positive
image of yourself and your organization.
 Treat your workplace as your own.
 Develop and maintain healthy attitude and habits.
 Maintain punctuality, discipline individual efficiency.
