     Mohan das Kram Chand Gandhi was born on 2 oct 1869.
    He was a great leader, a practical philosopher and an
    educational thinker.
    The basic scheme of education

     Gandhi used the term basic education because it is


    intimately related with the basic needs and interest of
    Indian children.

     The basic scheme of education has an aim to develop


    Self sufficiency.

     According to M.K Gandhi, the purpose of education is to


    inculcate a sense of social responsibility.

     He holds the view that a child’s education should begin


    with the teaching of useful craft.

     The goal of basic education is to enable a student to


    acquire the desired fruit through his or her own actions.

    FEATURES OF BASIC
    EDUCATION
     There should be free and compulsory education within the
    age group of 7-14.

     Education should develop human values in the child.

     The medium of language should be in mother tongue.

     The basic education is self supported through some


    productive work.

     Subjects are taught in correlation with craft, with


    environment and with other subjects.

     Don’t over load kids with books.

    1. Basic craft – Agriculture, Spinning, Weaving
    crafts?
    2. Mother – tongue.

    3. Mathematics – useful for craft and


    community life.

    4. Social studies – social and economic life of the


    community, culture the community, history of
    craft etc.

    5. General science – nature study, zoology,


    physiology, hygiene, physical culture,
    anatomy etc.

    6. Drawing and music.


    Methods of

     Children should be educated through a basic
    craft.

     Mother tongue should be the medium of


    instructions.

     The basic scheme emphasizes on learning by


    doing method.

     Correlation should be established among


    different academic subjects.
    MAHATMA GANDHI AND
    SELF-SUFFICIENCY
    o Gandhi's philosophy, swaraj for the nation did not mean
    merely political independence from British rule.

    o His swaraj was one where every individual was his or her own
    ruler, with the capacity to control and regulate his or her own
    life. This would remove inequalities of power and status in
    society.

    o He wrote that when India will becomes English, it will be


    called not Hindustan, but Englistan, This is not the swaraj I
    want”.
    SPINNING – The idea of
    self sufficiency
    Gandhiji emphasized the importance of
    handicrafts, especially spinning and weaving.
