Study Guide Graphing Polynomial Functions

This document discusses polynomial functions and their graphs. It defines even and odd functions, where even functions have graphs pointing in the same direction at both ends and odd functions have graphs pointing in opposite directions. Zeros are defined as the x-intercepts where the function is equal to 0. The multiplicity of a zero, determined from the factored form of the polynomial, impacts whether the graph crosses or touches the x-axis at that point. The document provides examples of graphs with zeros of multiplicity 1, 2, and 3 and asks the reader to identify zeros and multiplicities from graphs.

POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS and THEIR GRAPHS

•
Learning objectives-
• Recognize even and odd functions. Identify graphs of polynomial functions, the zeros and end behavior.
• Fundamental Theorem of Algebra – Polynomial of degree will have EXACTLY roots.
• Identify zeros of polynomial functions with even and odd multiplicity.
The graphs of some polynomial functions have special attributes that are determined by the value of the exponents in the polynomials. Here
are some basic polynomial shapes.

Conclusion about the end behavior of even
and odd functions:
• Even functions – both ends of the graphs
are pointing in the SAME direction.
End
  behavior: End
behavior: • Odd functions – both ends of the graphs
are pointing at the OPPOSITE directions.
Zeros and Multiplicity
• Zeros – the x-intercepts where f(x)=0.
• Graphs behave differently at various x-intercepts. Sometimes the graph will cross over the x-axis
at an intercept. Other times the graph will touch the x-axis and bounce off.
• The number of times a given factor appears in the factored form of the equation of a polynomial
is called the multiplicity.
• For zeros with even multiplicities, the graphs touch or are tangent to the x-axis at these x-values.
For zeros with odd multiplicities, the graphs cross or intersect the x-axis at these x-values. See the
graphs below for examples of graphs of polynomial functions with multiplicity 1, 2, and 3.

Single zero:
One x=0

Zero with multiplicity 2

Two x=0 or

Zero with multiplicity 3

Three x=0 or
Match the functions with the graphs (drag the function to the graph).

f(x)= x + 3
g(x) = x2 – 9 = (x-3)(x+3)

h(x)= x3+x2-9x-9=(x+3)(x-3)(x+1)
k(x)= x4-10x2+9=(x+3)(x-3)(x+1)(x-1)

p(x)= x5+10x4+37x3+60x2+36x=x(x+3)2(x+2)2
Practice
1. Use the graph of the function of degree 6 to identify the zeros of the
function and their possible multiplicities. •
2. Graph of the function in the factor form:

Find the Zeros: x+3=0 x-2 = 0 x+1=0

What is the sign of the Solve for x: x = -3 x = 2 x = -1

Zeros: 2 Multiplicity: 2 Means: graph bounces off x-axis
