School garden is an area of land
within the school ground or nearby
that embraces a variety of gardening
and agricultural elements in which
school children actively help parents
and other interested community
member in creating and maintaining it
and children use the garden for
learning for recreation and by acting
what is harvested. Benefits of school
gardening can be acquired by pupils,
teacher, school and community; there
are educational benefit,
environmental, stewardship and
connection with nature, lifestyles and
human active learning and student
engagement, student attention and
management, teachers as gardeners,
connection to history and community
and last but not the least, It’s a school
pride.
School garden is a
wonderful way to use the
school yard as a classroom,
reconnect students with the
natural world and the true
source of their food and
teach them valuable
gardening and agriculture
concept and skills that
integrate with several
subjects. As per stated in
DepEd Memorandum No.
89s 2015 also known as
implementation of the
Department of Education
Funded Gulayan sa Paaralan
(GPP).
To strengthening the
Implementation of the
Gulayan sa Paaralan
Program, the Calicalit
Elementary School
promotes the healthy way of
living by planting vegetables
in the backyard through the
Project ANI (Advocating
Gardening and sustainable
living in the New Normal
trough the Implementation
of Gulayan sa
Paaralan/Tahanan
Program).
Calitcalit Elementary
School support this program,
that implements through the
leadership of Mrs. Marilyn
Manalo, Head Teacher II and
the School Gulayan sa
Paaralan Coordinator. The
learners were trained to grow
vegetables in their backyard
using available materials they
can find. Learners were
motivated during gardening at
home. Despite on ongoing
pandemic they did a job well
done as part of their
responsibilities in sharing and
implements consumption of
vegetables among their
community for a better healthy
and balance diet.
Because the Covid-
19 pandemic had put an
end to the Gulayan sa
Paaralan's face-to-face
activities, the head of
school and GPP
Coordinator have chose
to continue a DepEd-
approved program. And
to address some of the
challenges, the
Provincial Government
of Batangas thru the
Provincial School
Board/Special
Education Fund,
distributed the seeds to
support in Gulayan sa
Paaralan/Tahanan.
In support of the
project, Calitcalit
Elementary School
sends seeds and
seedlings to each
student's parents to
plant at home. And, to
assure success, each
classroom adviser
works with parents and
students to track the
progress of each crop
from seed to harvest.

This activity aims to address
malnutrition and promote vegetable
production and consumption among
students, and inculcate in them the
value of gardening, good health and
nutrition, and love of labor in their
home amidst of the pandemic.
Gulayan sa Paaralan/Tahanan
Program is an activity which aim to
promote proper nutrition and
mitigate hunger among learners.
Eating right amount of fruits and
vegetables will help develop the
body and mind of the students, that
is why all schools are encourage to
have this kind of program.
However, when the year
2022 emerges, the GPP
coordinator of Calitcalit
Elementary School teachers
resume Gulayan sa Paaralan
implementation. However,
but since teachers are so
pre-occupied with face-to-
face class preparation that
they are unable to
concentrate solely on the
School Gulayan, the GPP
coordinator scheduled the
4p's members parents to
work on strengthening the
Gulayan.
The breakout of the
pandemic and natural causes
caused minor damage to the
school grounds, including the
Gulayan sa Paaralan area.
Calitcalit Elementary School
created a series of GPP
programs to help revive the
Gulayan.
Furthermore,
GPP Coordinator
created an action
plan to sustain the
all-year-round
activities for
Gulayan sa
Paaralan.
