RAILWAY TRACKS
To be presented by:

INTRODUCTION
■ What material is used to make railway
tracks?
Medium carbon steel or Hot rolled steel (Steel
1084) Rolling blooms through specific T- shapes

■ Properties of the Train track material?

High wear resistance and Resistance to
fracturing
■ How are rail tracks made?
■ What are the processes used?
Some extrusion molding followed by rolling
Rails cooling after manufacture on a cooling bank
Methods Used and Pre-cleaning
■Visual testing: Requires surface cleaning
and just the use of visual aids like
magnifying glass and lights for the testing
of railway tracks.
■Liquid penetrant testing: Uses LP testing
kit for performing test, requires cleaning
at each step, i.e., before applying
Penetrant, before developer is applied,
and final cleaning.
■Magnetic particle inspection: Cleaning
is required and magnetic powder is
applied and then the magnetization of the
material is performed the get the defects.
■Eddy current: No cleaning is required, this is
performed on railway tracks to get on surface defects by
touching the probe or holding just above on the railway
track and we get the defect on the screen as a graph.

■Ultrasound: No cleaning is required, and is performed

by moving ultrasonic equipment over the railway tracks.
And getting the reading as echoes represented as graph
we mainly use different types of probes to detect even
the cracks which are on angle.

■There are 2 methods of ultrasonic testing which are

– By using Inspection Trains

– By using manual inspection method

Advantages and Disadvantages of UT in
Railway Inspections
Advantages:
■ Can cover large distances of the rail surface
■ Safe and highly accurate
■ Instant results
Disadvantages:
■ Probe requires contact with the rail
■ Defects near bolt holes and rail ends are hard to detect
■ High degree of operator skill is required
Most common types of Defects found in
Railway Tracks

Initiated crack propagation (growth)

Buckling
Shelling, Bolt-hole, Longitudinal and Transverse Cracks
CODES AND STANDARDS FOR INSPECTION
■ ANSI Codes and Standards for railway inspection (American National Standard
Institute)

Allowable limits for railway misalignments

Allowable limits for railway surface defect according to standards
