Evaluating Algebraic

Expressions
Objectives:

1. recall the rules in operations on integers, PEMDAS, and

exponential notation; and
2. evaluate mathematical expressions for the given values of the
variables.
Let’s Review!
Operations on Integers
Addition Summary:
1. Same signs – add their absolute values and keep the same sign.
Ex.
(- 8) + (- 2) = - (8 absolute
+ = the larger
2. Different signs –  subtract + 2) = value to the
smaller absolute value and give the answer the same sign as the
number with the larger absolute value.
Ex.

7 + (- 11) = -(11 - 7) =

Let’s Review!
Operations on Integers
Subtraction Summary:
1. Change the subtraction sign to addition and change the sign of
the number after the subtraction sign.
2. Follow rules for addition.
Ex.
(-9) - (9) = (-9) + (-9) = -18
Let’s Review!

Operations on Integers
Multiplication and Division Summary:
1. Same signs – the answer is POSITIVE.
2. Different signs – the answer is NEGATIVE.

PEMDAS Rule –  tells the correct sequence of steps for evaluating

a math expression.

Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, Addition,

Subtraction.
Let’s Review!
Exponential Notation
Example: (-2)4
Base – refers to the number that is being multiplied.
Exponent – tells you how many times the base is used
as a factor.

(-2)4 = (-2)(-2)(-2)(-2) = 16
Evaluating Algebraic Expressions

 To evaluate an algebraic expression means to replace a variable

by a particular value and to simplify the expression.
 We evaluate an expression by substituting the value for the
variable and finding the value of the expression.
Evaluate
1. 3x for x = 3 2. 3xy for x = 3 ; y = -2
3x = 3(3) 3xy = 3(3)(-2)
=9 = (9)(-2)
= -18
3. 3x + y for x = 4 ; y = 5
3x + y = 3(4) + 5
= 12 + 5
= 17
Evaluate the following if a = 2, b = 3 and c = -2
1. abc 2. -5b - c
abc = (2)(3)(-2) -5b – c = -5(3) - (-2)
= (6)(-2) = -15 – (-2)
= -12 = -15 + 2
= -13
3. a(b + c) 4. =

a(b + c) = 2 [(3 + (-2) ]

= (2)(1) =
=2
= -6
Evaluate the following if x = 3, y = -2 and z = 4
1. xy3 2. 2x2 + 4y
= (3)(-2)3 = 2(3)2 + 4(-2)
= (3)(-8) = 2(9) + (-8)
= -24 = 18 + (-8)
= 10

3.

= = = = = 41
