human survival;
2.Identify the different universal values;
3.Discuss the different concepts of universal values;
4.Explain the relationship between individual acts and
character; and
5.Explain and articulate each stage of moral
development.

BASIC UNIVERSAL VALUES

WHAT IS UNIVERSAL VALUES?


VALUES -
Values describe the personal qualities we choose
to embody to guide our actions; the sort of person
we want to be; the manner in which we treat
ourselves and others, and our interaction with the
world around us. 
UNIVERSAL –
Refers to the set of all things created and what
is common to all its kind.
UNIVERSAL VALUES

◦Are formed by implied behavioral standards that are


necessary to live in a harmonious and peaceful society.

◦To cultural differences, we can say that the goodness,


solidarity, volunteerism and honesty are virtues you want in
any country or region. So, these are universal values.
SCHWARTZ CONCEPT OF
UNIVERSAL VALUES
◦ S. H SCHWARTZ
◦ Shalom H. Schwartz is a social psychologist, cross
cultural researcher and creator of the “ Theory of
Basic Human Values”
◦ Defined “ values” as conceptions of desirable that
influence the way people select action and evaluate
events. (Sen, 1999).

over people and resources.
ACHIEVEMENT
◦Personal success through demonstrating
competence according to social standards.
HEDOISM
◦ Pleasure or sensuous gratification for oneself.
STIMULATION
◦ Excitement, novelty, and challenge in life.
SELF DIRECTION
◦ Independent thought and action-oriented choosing,
creating, exploring.
UNIVERSALISM
◦ Understanding, appreciation, tolerance, and
protection for the welfare of all people and for
nature.
BENEVOLENCE
◦ Preservation and enhancement of the welfare of with
whom one is in frequent personal contact.
TRADITION
◦ Respect, commitment, and acceptance of the
customs and ideas that tradition culture or religion
provide.
CONFORMITY
◦ Restraint of actions inclinations, and impulses likely
to upset or harm others and violate social
expectations or norms.
SECURITY
◦ Safety, harmony and stability of society, of
relationship, and of self.
UN CHARTER ON UNIVERSAL
VALUES
The values enshrined in the United Nations (UN)
charter, respect for fundamental human rights, social
justice and human dignity, and respect for the equal
rights of men and women, serves as overarching
values to which suppliers of goods and services to the
UN are expected to adhere.
