CHAPTER 3

EARLY EDUCATION
IN CALAMBA AND
BIÑAN
THE HERO'S FIRST TEACHER
 DOÑA TEODORA (RIZAL’S MOTHER)
- was rizal's first non-formal
teacher
- at the age of three Jose learned
prayers and the alphabet
- first discovered that her son had
a talent for poetry
PRIVATE TUTORS OF RIZAL
 Maestro Celestino was rizal's first private
tutor.
 Maestro Lucas Padua was the second
private tutor.
 Maestro Leon Monroy became the hero's
tutor in Spanish and Latin. He was a
classmate of don Francisco.
JOSE GOES TO BIÑAN
 Rizal left Calamba to Biñan on June 1869
 Paciano – older brother of Jose
 rode in a carromata - the mode of
transportation
 Aunt's house where Rizal lodges for
school
FIRST DAY IN BIÑAN SCHOOL

 Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz – formal


teacher of Paciano.
 Pedro – the teacher’s son and also the
bully.
FIRST SCHOOL BRAWL
 Jose challenged Pedro into a fight.
- He defeated the bigger boy as he
learned the art of wrestling from his
athletic Tio Manuel - Jose tutor of the art of
wrestling.
 Andres Salandanan challenged Jose
afternoon after class to an arm – wrestling
match.
PAINTING LESSONS IN BIÑAN
 Old Juancho freely gave painting and
drawing lessons to Jose.
 Jose Rizal and Jose Guevarra became
apprentices of old Juancho.
 They became “the favorite painters in the
class”.
DAILY LIFE IN BIÑAN
 Jose led a methodical life in Biñan,
almost Spartan in simplicity.
 He recorded his daily life in his memoir.
-goes to school at 2 and came out at 5
BEST STUDENT IN SCHOOL

 Jose beat all Biñan boys.


 Some of his older classmates were
jealous and squealed to the teacher
whenever he had fights.
END OF BIÑAN SCHOOLING
 December 17,1870 Rizal left biñan.
 Talim the steamer that Rizal rode.
 Arturo camps a Frenchmen and a
friend of Don Francisco, he took care of
Rizal during the trip.
MARTYRDOM OF GOM-BUR-ZA
 January 20,1872 – Cavite mutiny.
 February 17,1872 – fathers Mariano Gomez,
Jose burgos and Jacinto Zamora were
implicated and executed.
 The gomburza were leaders of the
secularization movement.
 In 1891, Rizal dedicated his second novel El
Filibusterismo to Gom-Bur-Za.
INJUSTICE TO HERO’S MOTHER
 In 1872, Doña Teodora was arrested on a
malicious charge that she aided his brother Jose
Alberto in trying to poison his wife.
 Jose Alberto's wife connived with the Spanish
lieutenant of the Guardia civil and filed a case
against rizal's mother.
 Antonio Vivencio del Rosario gobernadorcillo of
Calamba help the lieutenant arrest Doña Teodora.
 50 kilometers Doña Teodora was made to
walk from Calamba to the provincial
prison in Santa Cruz.
 Francisco de Marcaida and Manuel
Marzan most famous lawyers of manila
defended Doña Teodora in court.
 After 2 ½ years the royal audiencia
acquitted Doña Teodora.
