• Release of gas
• Energy Change
• Odor Change
System and Surroundings
Energy Changes

• Breaking and Making Bonds

 Bonds in the reactants are broken.
Energy is absorbed to break bonds. Bond-breaking is
an endothermic process.
 New bonds in the products are formed.
Energy is released when new bonds form. Bond-making is
an exothermic process.
Whether a reaction is endothermic or exothermic
depends on the difference between the energy needed
to break bonds and the energy released when new bonds
form.
Types of Reactions depending upon energy
Changes
• Based on the type of energy (heat) change
involved, chemical reactions are classified
as either exothermic or endothermic.

– Exothermic: energy is released

• Exo- = “exit”
• Burning of gasoline

– Endothermic: energy is absorbed

• Endo- = “into”
• Melting of ice Cubes
Examples of Exothermic Reactions

Exothermic

• Combustion of fuels
• Yeast & Hydrogen Peroxide
• Dissolving Laundry Detergent in Water
Energy Diagram of Exothermic Reactions
Examples of Endothermic Reactions
• Photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2

• vinegar and baking soda

• Citric Acid & Sodium Bicarbonate (Sherbet)
C6H8O7 + 3NaHCO3 → Na3C6H5O7 + 3CO2(g) + 3H2O
citric acid + sodium bicarbonate → sodium citrate + carbon dioxide +
water
• Ice Packs

ENDOTHERMIC OR EXOTHERMIC?
6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy C6H12O6 + 6O2

ENDOTHERMIC
