Definition
Electronic mail or e-mail is a method
of exchanging digital messages from
an author to one or more recipients
through Internet or intranet
communication platforms.

Functions
–Allows individuals and groups to
communicate with one another.
–Sending documents.

Advantages
–Cheap
–Easy to use
–Fast communication

Disadvantages
–Emotional responses
–Information overload
–Lacks the personal touch

In almost all the question types that
have been asked out there, you will
most probably be asked to :
a) invite/suggest/recommend
b) give 1 or more reasons
c) encourage someone to take action

1. Email addresses
–Email address of the sender
–Email address of the receiver
Example:
To: ahmad@gmail.com
From: nizam@gmail.com

2. Subject Line
 Subject line is the part of the email that
subscribers see when it lands in their inbox.
 They use it to judge whether an email is worth
opening.
Example:
Subject: Invitation to a Class Reunion

3) Greetings and introduction
Hi/Hello/Dear _______,
 What are you going to do this weekend? I am
thinking to go to the ______________ this Saturday.
 What’s up? Sorry for the late reply. I have read your
message.

4) Purpose or intention
Tells reader why are you writing the email.
It also helps you to make sure you answer the question.
For example:
I am writing/sending this email to inform / invite /
tell / suggest / recommend
___________________________________.

5) Reasons / Suggestions /
Recommendations
 Look carefully at the instructions and identify whether it wants
“A REASON / SUGGESTIONS / RECOMMENDATIONS”
or
“MORE THAN ONE REASONS / SUGGESTIONS / RECOMMENDATIONS”
 Use connecting words to help arrange your points.
 Use the guide questions. (WH-questions)
 Some suggested sentence starters are there to help you build around the notes
given from given text.

Here are some very useful sentences
that you can include in your email:
– I know you like ______ right?
– You are going to love it.
– We can have fun together.
– We can take a lot of pictures there.
– What are you waiting for? Come and join me.

6) Encouragement
– I know you like _______
– I hope you can make it.
– I hope you can join me/us.

7) Closure
– Just a sentence to end the whole writing.
 I need to go now. Talk to you soon. Bye
 Drop me a line as soon as you see this. Take care!
End it with signature (Short name only):

You plan to take your friend out for dinner to one of these
restaurants. In 80 words, write an e-mail to your friend.
In your email,
 State the restaurant you plan to take him/her
 Give reasons to support your choice
 Add other relevant information to make your writing interesting

different types of Thai food. I know you love Thai food so you will surely enjoy the dishes.
I hope you can join us. I need to go now. Talk to you soon. Bye!
