Philosophy

Bilim ve toplum ilişkisi bağlamında içselci bilim tarihi paradigması yetersiz kalmaktadır. Bilim ve Teknoloji/Toplum Çalışmalarının henüz bir paradigma sahibi olmaması,
sosyal fenomenlerin bilime olan etkilerinin incelenmesini engellemez. Non-epistemolojik
faktörlerden olan toplumun iktisadî yapısı, bilimin gelişmesi veya duraklamasında en az
epistemolojik faktörler kadar etkiye sahiptir. Bu çalışmada, 17.yüzyıl’da “bilim-dışı” etmenler üzerinden gelişen Avrupa bilimi ve “bilim-dışı” etmenler üzerinden gelişemeyen
Osmanlı bilimi mukayesesi yapılmıştır. Zanaatkâr ve mütefenninden pozitivizme evrilen
bilim, Avrupa’ya kıyasla Osmanlı’daki iktisadî ve toplumsal yapı farklarından dolayı nisbî olarak gelişmiştir.

In the context of the relationship between science and society, the internalist paradigm of the history of science does not appear to be satisfactory. The fact that a paradigm
for Science and Technology / Society Studies has not been built yet, does not prevent the
researchers to analyse the effects of social phenomena on science. The economic structure
of society, which is one of the non-epistemological factors, has at least as much effect as
the epistemological factors on the development or stagnation of science in a given society.
In this study, we intend to make a comparison between European Science that developed
through “non-scientific” factors in the 17th century and Ottoman Science that could not
develop due to “non-scientific” factors. The Science evolved into positivism from its phase
of craftsman and engineers developed relatively due to the economic and social structure
differences in the Ottoman Empire compared to Europe

Edmund Husserl, who is seen as the founder of phenomenology, laid the foundation of a philosophy or method that could be the basis for the scientific developments of his time. In the first part of this article, the historical and social context in which Husserl’s phenomenological method emerged is shown. In the second part, Husserl’s critique against the reductionist attitude and narrow empirical knowledge understanding in 20th century popular thought movements such as naturalism and positivism has been examined. After a detailed presentation of the phenomenological method, the criticism of Husserl’s claim to get rid of Kant idealism was presented by Theodor W. Adorno and it was shown that Husserl’s phenomenology exhibits a very similar picture to Plato’s idea of ideas. In the last part, Husserl phenomenology was subjected to an epistemological analysis and it was observed that the hypothetical basis of the hypothesis was very large. By revealing the contradictions in these assumptions, the weakness of the epistemological and ontological basis of the hypothesis has been tried to be shown, and it is possible to see the problems of systems or methods in which hypothetical propositions are high in general in Husserl’s phenomenological method. Finally, the areas where Husserl phenomenology is possible have been tried to be shown. Husserl, who set out with the claim of establishing a philosophy that will be the basis of the whole field of knowledge, entered the world of philosophy with a method that is almost impossible to apply in the theoretical and practical fields of science. In this study, it is claimed that Husserl’s phenomenological method is used in some sciences where the experience of the subject is at the center instead of being the basis for every field of knowledge, and it gives more successful results than the positivist science based on pure sensory data.

Fenomenolojinin kurucusu olarak görülen Edmund Husserl
kendi döneminin bilimsel gelişmelerine temel olabilecek bir
felsefe ya da yöntemin temelini atmıştır. Makalenin ilk
bölümünde Husserl’in ortaya attığı fenomenolojik yöntemin
ortaya çıktığı felsefi arka plan tarihsel olarak gösterilmeye
çalışmış, ikinci bölümde ise naturalizm ve pozitivizm gibi
20.yüzyılın popüler düşünce akımlarındaki indirgemeci
tutum ve dar empirik bilgi anlayışına karşı Husserl’in
eleştirisi incelenmiştir. Fenomenolojik yöntemin detaylı bir
sunumu yapıldıktan sonra Husserl’in Kant idealizminden
kurtulma iddiasına Theodor W. Adorno tarafından yapılan
eleştiri sunularak Husserl fenomenolojisinin Platon’un
idealar düşüncesine çok benzer bir tablo sergilediği
gösterilmiştir. Son bölümde ise Husserl fenomenolojisi
epistemolojik bir analize tâbi tutulmuş ve Husserl’in
fenomenolojik yöntem hipotezindeki varsayımsal temelin
çok büyük olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu varsayımlardaki çelişkiler ortaya konularak hipotezin epistemolojik ve ontolojik temelinin zayıflığı gösterilmeye çalışmış ve genel olarak varsayımsal önermelerin fazla olduğu sistem ya da yöntemlerin problemlerini Husserl’in fenomenolojik yönteminde de görmek mümkündür. Nihai olarak Husserl fenomenolojisinin imkanlı olduğu alanlar gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır. Bütün bilgi alanına temel olacak bir felsefenin kuruluşu iddiası ile yola çıkan Husserl, bilimin teorik ve pratik alanlarında uygulanması neredeyse imkansız bir yöntem ile felsefe dünyasına girmiştir. Bu çalışmada Husserl’in fenomenolojik yöntemi her bilgi alanına temel olmak yerine öznenin deneyiminin merkezde olduğu bazı bilimlerde kullanılarak salt duyu verilerine dayalı pozitivist bilimden daha başarılı sonuçlar verdiği iddia edilmiştir.

The  problem  of  determinism  and  human  freedom,  which  is  one  of  the  great  debates  in  philosophy,  has  been  discussed  many  times  by  philosophers  who  have  very  distinctive  perspectives  and  thereby  different  results  related  to  the  problem.  Charles  Hartshorne  as  an  American  process  philosopher has significantly contributed to the debate with  his  own  thoughts  and  considerations.  His  thoughts  can  be  divided into two major parts. First is the claim that there is a  relative  indeterminism  within  the  universe.  Second  is  that  (hard)  determinist  and  compatibilist  positions  have  serious  theoretical and practical difficulties. This paper is only about  second  part  of  his  thoughts  related  to  the  debate.  So,  in  this  paper, firstly, I attempt to depict and examine his objections  to  the  arguments  for  determinism  and  compatibilism.  And  then,  secondly,  I  try  to  interrogate  two  fundamental  assumptions  behind  his  objections.  One  is  the  fallacy  of  burden of proof and other is a fallacy based on the appeal to  common sense in order to prove any factual or metaphysical  assertion.

Flew strongly defends a compatibilist thesis in the free will debate before going on to totally object to theistic libertarianism. His objections basically rely on his compatibilism embracing the notion of agent causation, which is not very common in compatibilist theses. Since he is a strong proponent of ordinary language philosophy, he also holds that linguistic analyses can certainly solve the free will problem as well as many other problems of philosophy. In doing so, he first uses the paradigm cases based on our common sense experience and then assumes the verity of principle of alternative possibilities. This study attempts to show, on the one hand, that there are some serious difficulties in both his justification of compatibilism and his objections to theistic libertarianism, and on the other hand, that he cannot easily defend both at the same time.

Sustainable social development cannot be fully understood apart from its cultural, moral, political, and educational foundations; and philosophy helps us to see it as a whole and to clearly comprehend its foundations. The main assumption behind that claim is that we can know what to do for realizing sustainable development if we actually know about specific or internal reasons for the fall of the societ- ies and civilizations. This chapter begins with such an assumption and asserts that there must be four integrated foundations for any sustainable social development by benefiting from the views of Max Weber, Ibn Khaldun, Aristotle, John Dewey and some Ottoman Turkish philosophers: among those founda- tions are (1) effective working mentality grounded on culture, (2) strong ethical perspective including the virtues of moderation, friendship and sympathy, (3) flexible but stable social stratification which is based on middle class and positive competition, (4) effective state composed of solidarity, democracy and education of critical thinking. All those can, the author thinks, can be seen as parts of a sort of social liberalism rather than classical or neo-liberalism.

Bu çalışma insan davranışının nihai motivasyonunun her zaman kişisel çıkar olduğunu ifade eden güçlü bir psikolojik egoizm tezinin ahlakı temellendirmek için sağlam bir dayanak olmadığını göstermeyi denemekte; bunu yapmak için de başlıca iki yol izlemektedir: (1) Güçlü psikolojik egoizmin empirik açıdan da analitik açıdan da doğruluğu kanıtlanmamış bir tez olduğunu göstermek ve (2) onun etik egoizmle olan ilişkisinin sorunlu doğasına işaret etmek. Bununla beraber, böyle bir eleştiri, öncelikle, egoizmle ilgili temel kavramların herhangi bir karışıklığa meydan vermeyecek şekilde tanımlanmasını gerektirdiğinden, çalışmanın başında, güçlü psikolojik egoizmin mahiyeti ve içerdiği varsayımlar üzerinde ayrıca durulmuştur.

(Abstract: This paper tries to show that the thesis of strong psychological egoism, which simply claims that ultimate motivation of human behavior is always self-interest, is not a sound ground for morality. And it traces two ways for doing this: (1) to point out that strong psychological egoism is a thesis not warranted by neither empirical findings nor analytical argumentation and (2) to indicate the problematic nature of its relation to ethical egoism. However, so as not to cause a commotion this kind of critique first of all needs to define the basic concepts related to egoism accordingly paper also attempts to clarify the nature and assumptions of strong psychological egoism at its outset.)

Bu makalede Corliss Lamont’un özgürlükçü yaklaşımı betimlenip çözüm- lenmektedir. Doğalcı bir filozof olarak Lamont, seçme özgürlüğünün, yekpare, monist ve dolayısıyla da belirlenmiş bir evrende değil, ancak potansiyellik, bireysellik ve olumsallıkla dolu çoğulcu bir evrende mümkün olduğunu öne sürer. Bir kanıt formunda ifade etmeye çalıştığım ana akıl yürütmesi temelinde katı ve ılımlı belirlenimciliğe itiraz eden Lamont, seçme özgürlüğünü pozitif/kategorik bir özgürlük olarak tanımladığı için, bir öz-belirlenimcilik teorisini savunmakta ve onu bir tür bağdaşırcı açıklama olarak sunmaktadır. Bu makalede haklı olduğunu düşündüğüm yerlerde Lamont’u desteklemekte, fakat böyle düşünmediğim yerlerde de eleştirmekteyim. Bunu yaparken sonuç bölümünde Thomas W. Clark’ın Lamont’un özgürlükçülüğüne yönelttiği itirazlara da başvuruyorum. Bununla birlikte bana göre, Clark, Lamont’un bazı düşüncelerini yanlış anla- makta ve hatta bazı noktalarda Lamont’un kendi ifadelerini yanlış okumaktadır; fakat Clark’ın Lamont’un kaçınmaya çalıştığı düalizme düşme gibi bir sorunu olduğu şeklindeki ana itirazına da kısmen katılıyorum. (Abstract:
In this paper, I first describe and then analyze Corliss Lamont's libertarian approach. He as a naturalist philosopher maintains that freedom of choice is possible only in a pluralistic universe which is full of potentiality, individuality and contingecy, not in a monolithic, monist, and determined universe. On the basis of his main reasoning, which I try to put it into the form of an argument, he objects to hard and soft determinism. Since he defines the freedom of choice as a positive/categoric freedom, he defends a theory of self-determination and presents it as a kind of compatibilist explanation. In the paper, I support his ideas where I think he is right, but also criticize him where I think he is not right. In doing so, I refer to T. W. Clark's objections to Lamont's libertarianism at the concluding section. In my opinion, however, Clark misunderstands Lamont's some ideas and even misreads his own utterances, but I partly agree with Clark's main objection that Lamont has a trouble with dualism which he attempts to avoid. At the last point, I argue that Lamont’s theory of self-determination has some difficulties by its own nature: Either he must accept dualism which he tries to keep it away from his theory or he must leave the freedom of choice a secular “opinion” expected to be all explained only through the scientific discovery of the mystery of the brain in the future. As for Lamont, he “chooses” the second of the either-or options.)

Yirminci yüzyılın başından bu yana Batı düşüncesinde ortaya çıkan farklı ve hatta birbirine zıt görünen hümanizm anlayışları, Batılı hümanist düşünürler arasında hümanizm nedir sorusunu açık bir tartışmaya dönüştürmüştür. Bu durumun tipik bir örneği, yeni Thomist Fransız filozof Jacques Maritain’ın (1882-1973) teosentrik hümanizm iddiasıdır. Maritain, teosentrik hümanizminde, hümanist düşünce geleneği içinde yer alan insan merkezlilik, insanın kendine güveni, değeri, onuru, özgürlüğü, insancıllık ve aklın önemi gibi düşünceleri insanın tanrısal özüne atıfta bulunmak suretiyle yeniden yorumlamaktadır. Ona göre, insan kavramı insan varoluşunun doğal ve doğaüstü iki boyutunu da içeren bütüncül bir perspektiften yeniden değerlendirilmelidir. Bu makale bir yandan deskriptif ve normatif hümanizm tanımları arasında bir ayrım yaparak hümanizmle ilgili tanım tartışmasının mahiyetine bir açıklık getirmeyi denemekte öte yandan da Maritain’in normatif karakterli teosentrik hümanizm anlayışını betimlemeye ve üç kriter temelinde değerlendirmeye çalışmaktadır: (1) hümanizmde insan ve tanrı ilişkisi, (2) hümanizmin hümaniteryanizm ile bağlantısı; ve (3) hümanizmin hür düşünce ideali.

(Abstract:  Since the beginning of 20th century, the different and even contrary notions of humanism in western thought have turned the question of what is humanism into an open discussion among western humanist thinkers. A typical example for this is the claim of theocentric humanism of Jacques Maritain (1882-1973), new Thomist French philosopher. In his theocentric humanism, Maritain reinterprets, by referring to the divine essence of man, such ideas like centrality of man, man’s self-reliance, value and dignity of man, human freedom, humanitarianism and importance of human reason, all of which take place in humanist tradition of thought. To him, the concept of man needs to be re-evaluated from a holistic perspective including two dimensions of human existence, natural and supernatural. This paper attempts, on the one side, to make it clear the nature of debate on the definition of humanism through making a distinction between descriptive and normative definitions of humanism, and on the other side, tries to describe the understanding of Maritain’s theocentric humanism defined in a normative way and then to consider it on the base of three criteria: (1) relationship between man and god in humanism, (2) the connection of humanism to humanitarianism, and (3) ideal of free thought for humanism.)

ABSTRACT Egoism, as a view having a deep effect on the Western thought in its intellectual, economical, moral and political traditions, has basically two distinctive claims: Moral egoism as a normative claim and natural/psychological egoism as a descriptive claim. The former is mostly justified on the latter. Hartshorne argues, however, that the latter is also constructed on the assumption that there is an absolute personal identity for human self. He thinks that if this deeper assumption is true, then its inevitable result is already egoism at the outset. But if it is not true, then natural egoism supported by it will be necessarily wrong. This paper first deals with his evidences against the assumption of absolute personal identity and second indicates that his notion of non-substantialist self, which requires a neoclassic metaphysics, has no trouble overcoming the logical obstacle against the idea of loving other as one's self.
ÖZET Batı düşüncesinin entelektüel, ekonomik, ahlaki ve politik geleneğinde derin etkilere sahip bir görüş olarak egoizm genelde iki temel iddiaya sahiptir: Normatif bir iddia olarak ahlaki egoizm ve betimleyici bir iddia olarak doğal egoizm. Normatif iddia çoğu zaman betimleyici iddiaya dayanarak haklı çıkarılmaktadır. Fakat Hartshorne'a göre doğal egoizm de insani benin mahiyetine ilişkin mutlak bir kişisel özdeşlik varsayımı üzerine kurulmuştur. Eğer bu varsayım doğru ise onun kaçınılmaz sonucu zaten egoizmdir; fakat yanlış ise desteklediği doğal egoizmin de yanlış olması gerekir. Bu bildiride Hartshorne'un mutlak kişisel özdeşlik varsayımı aleyhine ortaya koyduğu deliller üzerinde durulmuş ve sonuç olarak onun neoklasik metafiziğinin cevherci olmayan ben anlayışının kişinin bir başkasını kendisi gibi sevmesi önündeki mantıki engeli ortadan kaldırabilecek mahiyette olduğuna işaret edilmiştir.

This paper introduces and describes Kai Nielsen’s conception of “philosophy as a social critique”. The first part of the paper sets out Nielsen’s convictions about the nature and primary job of philosophy after the decline of the foundationalism. It presents his meta-philosophical opinions and tries to show what is his answer to the problem of methodology in social philosophy after foundationalism. Second part of the paper very shortly points out his principal ideas of some issues in social philosophy with reference to some contemporary philosophers like Habermas etc. The last part of the paper deals with the relationship between such a critical social philosophy and social science. It finally ends with a proposal what social sciences should make if they want to have an emancipatory character and help the advancement of the society as a whole.

ÖZET Bir üst-düşünme becerisi olarak eleştirel düşünme ve eleştirel düşünme öğretimi, günümüzde birçok bakımdan son derece önemlidir. O yüzden bu makale öncelikle onun kendini gerçekleştirme, zihinsel hijyen, bilgideki hızlı değişime uyum sağlama, araçsal rasyonelliğin ötesinde bir makullük, demokrasi ve hoşgörü için önemini ve gerekliliğini vurgular. Makale, bununla birlikte, eleştirel düşünme literatüründe bir tanım karmaşası ve sorunu bulunması nedeniyle, ikinci olarak, eleştirel düşünmenin ne olduğu ve ne olmadığına açıklık getirmeye çalışır; ve J. Dewey'nin " derinlemesine düşünme " teriminin çözümlenmesi aracılığıyla eleştirel düşünmenin temel niteliklerinin neler olduğunu ortaya koyar. Bu çözümlemeye göre, eleştirel düşünmenin üç zorunlu unsuru vardır: (1) Eleştirel düşünme becerileri, (2) eleştirel düşünme tutum ve eğilimleri, (3) eleştirel düşünme pratiği ve alışkanlığı. Makale nihayetinde bu önerilere uygun bir şekilde tasarlanmış bir eleştirel düşünme öğretimi örneğiyle son bulur.

ABSTRACT Critical thinking as an upper-thinking skill and teaching of critical thinking have very significances in many terms today. So, this paper first emphasizes its important and necessity for self-realization, mental hygiene, adaptation to rapid change in knowledge, reasonability going beyond instrumental rationality, democracy and toleration. Because there is however a definition problem in the literature about critical thinking, the paper second tries to clarify what critical thinking is and what it is not; and mentions its basic qualities by analysing the term of John Dewey's reflective thinking. According to the analysis, there are three necessary constituents of critical thinking: (1) Critical thinking skills, (2) dispositions and (3) drill. A Sound teaching critical thinking is impossible without taking into consideration them. The paper third maintains that there are at least six misperceptions about the teaching critical thinking and makes some proposals for a good teaching critical thinking. The paper is completed with a sample of teaching critical thinking.

In this paper, it has been attempted to show the close connection between Iqbal's thoughts of democracy and his ego philosophy. Because that Iqbal assumes that there is a significant relationship between one's metaphysical insights and his or her understanding of democracy, he makes an assertion that notion of democracy explained by generally referring to the western historical experience should and even can be based on the real sprit of Islam. In supporting his assertion, he attaches great importance to especially the affirmation of human self as well as such ideas as freedom, individuality, continuous creation and dynamism. Ideal of man, for him, is not self-negation but self-affirmation; and this ideal can be attained only by becoming more and more individual. Despite that, Iqbal does exclude the extreme individualism, lacking of moral values, promoted by materialistic democracies. But, he has strongly believed there is no alternative to democracy although he has been always unhappy with such democracies governed by immature individuals. For that reason, he presents his ideal, spiritual democracy, which will remove the obstacles in developing humane society, as an alternative both to utilitarian and materialist democracies of the West in his own time and to corrupt autocracies and totalitarianism of the East. In conclusion, his ideal of democracy is not a liberal but a conservative democracy.
