Suspenion fencing allows more efficient fencing. The suspension fence also works well in restraining animals.

Acorns are a neglected food for people, livestock, domestic fowl, and wildlife in California. Acorns are easy to collect, store, and process. In addition to the nutritious nut and meal, acorns yield an oil comparable in quality and flavor with olive oil. The existing acorn market could be greatly expanded and provide new income for rural people. A serious effort to identify and propagate the best oak acorn cultivars for these products is long overdue. It is particularly appropriate for this research to be done in California, which once had an acorn based economy.

Rice production is important in California, with 400,000 acres planted in many years. Disposal of the rice straw after harvest is desirable. Historically it was burned with smoke causing health problems and accidents on smoke shrouded highways. If left in the field it generates methane.
This report explores alternative uses for the straw in composite materials, paper, environmental protection, control of erosion, dust control, and as a construction material. It also has value in soil improvement, co-compositng with poultry waste, mushroom growing an weed suppression. Straw can also be burned to produce electricity as is done in Denmark.

Deep pipe irrigation is commonly done with 1" to 3" diameter vertical pipe placed 12-18" deep into the soil under or near the crop plant or tree. The top of the pipe* should be covered with a cap or a screen disk. For large scale ecological restoration work we glue 1/8 inch galvanized screen disks to the top of the pipe with silicone caulk. If a drip system can be setup the pipe can be smaller diameter (1/2"). We have set up a deep pipe irrigation system on a remote tank with batterypowered timer to irrigate once a week with excellent success. A series of small holes should be drilled in the side of the pipe near the plant if a seed is used or if a small transplant with roots shorter than the pipe is planted.

Accretion dunes or mounds (also known as nebkas or nebkhas) are formed when plants capture and then are partially buried in wind-blown sand. In the San Felipe drainage in the western Colorado Desert, mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa Torrey var. torreyana (L. D. Benson) M. C. Johnston)) forms dunes up to 5 m high. These are ecologically important for both ecosystem structure (primarily habitat) and function (soil accumulation, moisture retention and nutrient cycling). The widening of California state highway 86 damaged and removed several mesquite mounds and the California Department of Transportation asked us to explore techniques for recreating them to reduce sediment movement in high winds, enhance soil fertility, promote reestablishment of the original surrounding vegetation, and provide improved habitat. We created sand mounds and planted small mesquite seedlings on them in 1995. Followup research was conducted on site to address problems with irrigation identified in the early yea...

Developing true cost accounting is essential. Growing interest and work in this field is inspiring and will make a difference. Even rudimentary calculations of the external costs and benefits will help lead to change. Transactions between consumers, companies, organizations and communities will be more sustainable and lead to a more positive future.

Bikeway planning and design can influence user experience and the viability of bicycle based transportation. This draft was completed and about 10 copies were printed. The bicycle experience in Davis played a major role in the design section. At the time about 50% of commute was by bike. Review for earlier version.
