In this study, spectral, age, kinematic, and orbital dynamical analyses were conducted on metal-poor and high proper-motion (HPM) stars, HD 8724 and HD 195633, selected from the Solar neighborhood. This analysis combines detailed abundance measurements, kinematics, and orbital dynamics to determine their origin. Standard 1D local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis provides a fresh determination of the atmospheric parameters: $T_{\rm eff}=$4700$\pm$115 K, $\log g=$ 1.65$\pm$0.32 cgs, [Fe/H]=-1.59$\pm$0.04 dex, and a microturbulent velocity $ξ=$ 1.58$\pm$0.50 km s$^{\rm -1}$ for HD 8724 and $T_{\rm eff}=$6100$\pm$205 K, $\log g=$3.95$\pm$0.35 cgs, [Fe/H]=-0.52$\pm$0.05 dex, and $ξ=$1.26$\pm$0.50 km s$^{\rm -1}$ for HD 195633. The ages were estimated using a Bayesian approach (12.25 Gyr for HD 8724 and 8.15 Gyr for HD 195633). The escape scenarios of these stars from 170 candidate globular clusters (GCs) in the Galaxy were also investigated because of their chemical and physical differences (HPM and metal-poor nature). Accordingly, the calculated probability of encounter ($59\%$) for HD 8724 at a distance of five tidal radius suggests that star HD 8724 may have escaped from NGC 5139 ($ω$ Cen), supported by its highly flattened orbit and may belong to a sub-population of this GC. Conversely, HD 195633's kinematics, age, and metal abundances point towards an escape from the bulge GC NGC 6356.

In this study, we investigate the potential of fast-to-evaluate surrogate modeling techniques for developing a hybrid digital twin of a steel-reinforced concrete beam, serving as a representative example of a civil engineering structure. As surrogates, two distinct models are developed utilizing physics-informed neural networks, which integrate experimental data with given governing laws of physics. The experimental data (sensor data) is obtained from a previously conducted four-point bending test. The first surrogate model predicts strains at fixed locations along the center line of the beam for various time instances. This time-dependent surrogate model is inspired by the motion of a harmonic oscillator. For this study, we further compare the physics-based approach with a purely data-driven method, revealing the significance of physical laws for the extrapolation capabilities of models in scenarios with limited access to experimental data. Furthermore, we identify the natural frequency of the system by utilizing the physics-based model as an inverse solver. For the second surrogate model, we then focus on a fixed instance in time and combine the sensor data with the equations of linear elasticity to predict the strain distribution within the beam. This example reveals the importance of balancing different loss components through the selection of suitable loss weights.

High-accuracy positioning has gained significant interest for many use-cases across various domains such as industrial internet of things (IIoT), healthcare and entertainment. Radio frequency (RF) measurements are widely utilized for user localization. However, challenging radio conditions such as non-line-of-sight (NLOS) and multipath propagation can deteriorate the positioning accuracy. Machine learning (ML)-based estimators have been proposed to overcome these challenges. RF measurements can be utilized for positioning in multiple ways resulting in time-based, angle-based and fingerprinting-based methods. Different methods, however, impose different implementation requirements to the system, and may perform differently in terms of accuracy for a given setting. In this paper, we use artificial neural networks (ANNs) to realize time-of-arrival (ToA)-based and channel impulse response (CIR) fingerprinting-based positioning. We compare their performance for different indoor environments based on real-world ultra-wideband (UWB) measurements. We first show that using ML techniques helps to improve the estimation accuracy compared to conventional techniques for time-based positioning. When comparing time-based and fingerprinting schemes using ANNs, we show that the favorable method in terms of positioning accuracy is different for different environments, where the accuracy is affected not only by the radio propagation conditions but also the density and distribution of reference user locations used for fingerprinting.

It is expected that the line list will be useful for surveys/libraries with overlapping spectral regions (e.g. ELODIE/SOPHIE libraries, UVES-580 setting of Gaia-ESO), and in particular for the analysis of F- and G-type stars in general. The atomic data are supplemented by detailed references to the sources. We estimated the Solar abundances using stellar lines and the high-resolution Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) spectra of the Sun to determine the uncertainty in the log gf values. By undertaking a systematic search that makes use of the lower excitation potential and gf-values and using revised multiplet table as an initial guide, we identified 363 lines of 24 species that have accurate gf-values and are free of blends in the spectra of the Sun and a Solar analogue star, HD 218209 (G6V), for which accurate and up-to-date abundances were obtained from both ELODIE and PolarBASE spectra of the star. For the common lines with the Gaia-ESO line list v.6 provided by the Gaia-ESO collaboration, we discovered significant inconsistencies in the gf-values for certain lines of varying species.

This paper explores the ability of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to solve forward and inverse problems of contact mechanics for small deformation elasticity. We deploy PINNs in a mixed-variable formulation enhanced by output transformation to enforce Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions as hard constraints. Inequality constraints of contact problems, namely Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) type conditions, are enforced as soft constraints by incorporating them into the loss function during network training. To formulate the loss function contribution of KKT constraints, existing approaches applied to elastoplasticity problems are investigated and we explore a nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP) function, namely Fischer-Burmeister, which possesses advantageous characteristics in terms of optimization. Based on the Hertzian contact problem, we show that PINNs can serve as pure partial differential equation (PDE) solver, as data-enhanced forward model, as inverse solver for parameter identification, and as fast-to-evaluate surrogate model. Furthermore, we demonstrate the importance of choosing proper hyperparameters, e.g. loss weights, and a combination of Adam and L-BFGS-B optimizers aiming for better results in terms of accuracy and training time.

Wireless high-accuracy positioning has recently attracted growing research interest due to diversified nature of applications such as industrial asset tracking, autonomous driving, process automation, and many more. However, obtaining a highly accurate location information is hampered by challenges due to the radio environment. A major source of error for time-based positioning methods is inaccurate time-of-arrival (ToA) or range estimation. Existing machine learning-based solutions to mitigate such errors rely on propagation environment classification hindered by a low number of classes, employ a set of features representing channel measurements only to a limited extent, or account for only device-specific proprietary methods of ToA estimation. In this paper, we propose convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to estimate and mitigate the errors of a variety of ToA estimation methods utilizing channel impulse responses (CIRs). Based on real-world measurements from two independent campaigns, the proposed method yields significant improvements in ranging accuracy (up to 37%) of the state-of-the-art ToA estimators, often eliminating the need of optimizing the underlying conventional methods.

Performance of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications depends highly on the employed scheduling approach. While centralized network schedulers offer high V2V communication reliability, their operation is conventionally restricted to areas with full cellular network coverage. In contrast, in out-of-cellular-coverage areas, comparatively inefficient distributed radio resource management is used. To exploit the benefits of the centralized approach for enhancing the reliability of V2V communications on roads lacking cellular coverage, we propose VRLS (Vehicular Reinforcement Learning Scheduler), a centralized scheduler that proactively assigns resources for out-of-coverage V2V communications \textit{before} vehicles leave the cellular network coverage. By training in simulated vehicular environments, VRLS can learn a scheduling policy that is robust and adaptable to environmental changes, thus eliminating the need for targeted (re-)training in complex real-life environments. We evaluate the performance of VRLS under varying mobility, network load, wireless channel, and resource configurations. VRLS outperforms the state-of-the-art distributed scheduling algorithm in zones without cellular network coverage by reducing the packet error rate by half in highly loaded conditions and achieving near-maximum reliability in low-load scenarios.

Understanding the physical structures of the accreated matter very close to the black hole in quasars and active galactic nucleus (AGNs) is an important milestone to constrain the activities occurring in their centers. In this paper, we numerically investigate the effects of the asymptotic velocities on the physical structures of the accretion disk around the Kerr and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) rapidly rotating black holes. The Bondi-Hoyle accretion is considered with a falling gas towards the black hole in upstream region of the computational domain. The shock cones are naturally produced in the downstream part of the flow around both black holes. It is found that the structure of the cones and the amount of the accreated matter depend on asymptotic velocity $V_{\infty}$ (Mach number) and the types of the gravities (Kerr or EGB). Increasing the Mach number of the inflowing matter in the supersonic region causes the shock opening angle and accretion rates getting smaller because of the rapidly falling gas towards the black hole. The EGB gravity leads to an increase in the shock opening angle of the shock cones while the mass accretion rates $\dot{M}$ are decreasing in EGB gravity with a Gauss-Bonnet (GB) coupling constant $α$. It is also confirmed that accretion rates and drag forces are significantly altered in the EGB gravity. Our numerical simulation results could be used to identify the accreation mechanism and physical properties of the accretion disk and black hole in the observed $X-$ rays such as NGC $1313$ $X-1$ and $1313$ $X-2$ and MAXI $J1803-298$.

Altough both components of the bright eclipsing binary $α$ Dra having been resolved using long baseline interferometry and the secondary component shown to contribute some 15\% of the total flux, a spectroscopic detection of the companion star was so far unsuccessful. To achieve our goals, we use a combined data set from interferometry with the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI), photometry with the TESS space observatory, and high-resolution spectroscopy with the HERMES fibre-fed spectrograph at the La Palma observatory. We use the method of spectral disentangling to search for the contribution of a companion star in the observed composite HERMES spectra, to separate the spectral contributions of both components, and to determine orbital elements of the $α$ Dra system. TESS light curves are analysed in an iterative fashion with spectroscopic inference of stellar atmospheric parameters to determine fundamental stellar properties and their uncertainties. Finally, NPOI interferometric measurements are used for determination of the orbital parameters of the system and angular diameters of both binary components. We report the first firm spectroscopic detection of the secondary component in $α$ Dra and deliver disentangled spectra of both binary components. The inferred near-core mixing properties of both components do not support a dependence of the convective core overshooting on the stellar mass. At the same time, the $α$ Dra system provides extra support to hypothesise that the mass discrepancy in eclipsing spectroscopic double-lined binaries is associated with inferior atmospheric modelling of intermediate- and high-mass stars, and less so with the predictive power of stellar structure and evolution models as to the amount of near-core mixing and mass of the convective core. We determined the ages, the kinematic parameters and Galactic orbital parameters of six metal-poor (-2.4<[Fe/H]<-1 dex) F-type high proper motion (HPM) stars to investigate their HPM nature and origin. For the kinematical procedure, the astrometric data from the Gaia DR2 was used. High resolution ELODIE spectra of the six dwarfs were also used to obtain accurate [Fe/H] abundances and up-to-date [$α$/Fe] abundances. The calculations for stellar ages were based on Bayesian statistics, with the computed ages falling in the range 9.5-10.1 Gyrs. On the basis of the metallicities and ages, six HMP stars are members of halo (HD6755, HD84937, BD +42 3607) or members of the low-metallicity tail of the thick disk (HD 3567, HD 194598, HD 201891). However, Galactic orbital parameters suggest thin disk (HD 84937, HD 194598), thick disk (HD 3567, HD 201891), and halo (HD 6755, BD +42 3607) population. The dynamical analysis was also performed for the escape scenario from the candidate GCs. The tidal disruption of a dwarf galaxy was also considered to be as an alternative origin. HD 6755, HD 194598, and HD 3567 with their retrograde orbital motions are likely candidate stars for a tidally disrupted dwarf galaxy origin. However, HD 194598 relationship with NGC 6284 presents an interesting case. Its encounter velocity is low (16+/-28 km/s) and their ages and metallicities are very nearly consistent with each other at the 1$σ$ level. The rest of the HPM sample stars have a 4% to 18% probability of encountering with selected GCs for 1.5 tidal radii. This indicates that a globular cluster origin for the program stars is unlikely.

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications have distinct challenges that need to be taken into account when scheduling the radio resources. Although centralized schedulers (e.g., located on base stations) could be utilized to deliver high scheduling performance, they cannot be employed in case of coverage gaps. To address the issue of reliable scheduling of V2V transmissions out of coverage, we propose Vehicular Reinforcement Learning Scheduler (VRLS), a centralized scheduler that predictively assigns the resources for V2V communication while the vehicle is still in cellular network coverage. VRLS is a unified reinforcement learning (RL) solution, wherein the learning agent, the state representation, and the reward provided to the agent are applicable to different vehicular environments of interest (in terms of vehicular density, resource configuration, and wireless channel conditions). Such a unified solution eliminates the necessity of redesigning the RL components for a different environment, and facilitates transfer learning from one to another similar environment. We evaluate the performance of VRLS and show its ability to avoid collisions and half-duplex errors, and to reuse the resources better than the state of the art scheduling algorithms. We also show that pre-trained VRLS agent can adapt to different V2V environments with limited retraining, thus enabling real-world deployment in different scenarios.

We explore a new approach to radio resource allocation for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications in case of out-of-coverage areas that are delimited by network infrastructure. By collecting and predicting information such as vehicle velocity, density and message traffic, the network infrastructure ensures reliability of the V2V services. We propose reserving required amount of resources for services that cannot be pre-scheduled (e.g., emergency braking, crash notifications, etc.), and scheduling those services that can be pre-scheduled (e.g., platooning). We analyze the resource reservation as a function of target reliability under varying vehicle densities and sizes of out-of-coverage area. For pre-scheduled services, we explore how variations in the vehicle velocities and predictions affect successful transmissions. The results indicate that increase in required reliability does not penalize the system prohibitively. On the other hand, speed prediction errors decrease the transmission success rate considerably, thus calling for a more flexible scheduler design.

Radio resources in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication can be scheduled either by a centralized scheduler residing in the network (e.g., a base station in case of cellular systems) or a distributed scheduler, where the resources are autonomously selected by the vehicles. The former approach yields a considerably higher resource utilization in case the network coverage is uninterrupted. However, in case of intermittent or out-of-coverage, due to not having input from centralized scheduler, vehicles need to revert to distributed scheduling. Motivated by recent advances in reinforcement learning (RL), we investigate whether a centralized learning scheduler can be taught to efficiently pre-assign the resources to vehicles for out-of-coverage V2V communication. Specifically, we use the actor-critic RL algorithm to train the centralized scheduler to provide non-interfering resources to vehicles before they enter the out-of-coverage area. Our initial results show that a RL-based scheduler can achieve performance as good as or better than the state-of-art distributed scheduler, often outperforming it. Furthermore, the learning process completes within a reasonable time (ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand epochs), thus making the RL-based scheduler a promising solution for V2V communications with intermittent network coverage.

Secondly, we obtain the standard representation of the position vector of the curve with respect to Darboux frame in terms of the geodesic, normal curvature and geodesic torsion. As a result of this, we define the position vectors of geodesic, asymptotic and normal line along with some special curves with respect to Darboux frame. Finally, we elaborate on some examples and provide their graphs.

We have derived elemental abundances of a remarkable star, HD 179821, with unusual composition (e.g. [Na/Fe]=1.0$\pm$0.2 dex) and extra-ordinary spectral characteristics. Its metallicity at [Fe/H]=0.4 dex places it among the most metal-rich stars yet analyzed. The abundance analysis of this luminous star is based on high resolution and high quality (S/N$\approx$120--420) optical echelle spectra from McDonald Observatory and Special Astronomy Observatory. The data includes five years of observations over twenty-one epochs. Standard 1D {\sc LTE} analysis provides a fresh determination of the atmospheric parameters over all epochs: \Teff = 7350$\pm$200 \kelvin, \logg = +0.6$\pm$0.3, and a microturbulent velocity $ξ=$ 6.6$\pm$1.6 km s$^{\rm -1}$ and [Fe/H] = 0.4$\pm$0.2, and a carbon abundance [C/Fe]= $-$0.19$\pm$0.30. We find oxygen abundance [O/Fe]= $-$0.25$\pm$0.28 and an enhancement of 0.9 dex in N. A supersonic macroturbulent velocity of 22.0 $\pm$ 2.0 km s$^{\rm -1}$ is determined from both strong and weak Fe\,{\sc i} and Fe\,{\sc ii} lines. Elemental abundances are obtained for 22 elements. HD 179821 is not enriched in s-process products. Eu is overabundant relative to the anticipated [X/Fe] $\approx$ 0.0. Some peculiarities of its optical spectrum (e.g. variability in the spectral line shapes) is noticed. This includes the line profile variations for H$α$ line. Based on its estimated luminosity, effective temperature and surface gravity, HD 179821 is a massive star evolving to become a red supergiant and finally a Type II supernova.

High resolution (R=60 000) spectra of the stars with a wide wavelength coverage were obtained to determine their chemical compositions with the Tull echelle spectrograph on the 2.7 m telescope at the McDonald Observatory. We derived the spectroscopic parameters Teff =5820+-125 K, log g =3.9+-0.2, and vt =1.1+-0.5 km/s for SDSSJ100921.40+375233.9, Teff=6250+-125 K, log g =3.7+-0.2, and vt =4.0+-0.5 km/s for SDSSJ015717.04+135535.9, and Teff=6320+-125 K, log g =4.1+-0.3, and vt =1.5+-0.5 km/s for SDSS J171422.43+283657.2, and elemental abundances were computed for 21 elements for J100921 and J171422 and for 19 elements for J015717 for the first time. We find metallicities of [Fe/H]= -1.30, -0.94, and -0.80 for SDSSJ100921.40+375233.9, J015717.04+135535.9, and J171422.43+283657.2, respectively. On the basis of calculated abundance ratios for J171422.43+283657.2 and J015717.04+135535.9, we also report that these two program stars have the expected composition of main-sequence halo turnoff stars, but with low-alpha abundances, i.e., the [alpha/Fe] ratio is ~0.0 for J171422.43+283657.2 and ~0.1 for J015717.04+135535.9. The latter one shows typical halo or thick-disk alpha-element abundances, but has a substantial rotational line broadening and vsini=40 +- 0.5 km/s.

We report a multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cep stars V2052 Oph and V986 Oph. 670 hours of high-quality differential photoelectric Stromgren, Johnson and Geneva time-series photometry were obtained with eight telescopes on five continents during 182 nights. Frequency analyses of the V2052 Oph data enabled the detection of three pulsation frequencies, the first harmonic of the strongest signal, and the rotation frequency with its first harmonic. Pulsational mode identification from analysing the colour amplitude ratios confirms the dominant mode as being radial, whereas the other two oscillations are most likely l=4. Combining seismic constraints on the inclination of the rotation axis with published magnetic field analyses we conclude that the radial mode must be the fundamental. The rotational light modulation is in phase with published spectroscopic variability, and consistent with an oblique rotator for which both magnetic poles pass through the line of sight. The inclination of the rotation axis is 54o <i< 58o and the magnetic obliquity 58o <beta< 66o. The possibility that V2052 Oph has a magnetically confined wind is discussed. The photometric amplitudes of the single oscillation of V986 Oph are most consistent with an l=3 mode, but this identification is uncertain. Additional intrinsic, apparently temporally incoherent, light variations of V986 Oph are reported. Different interpretations thereof cannot be distinguished at this point, but this kind of variability appears to be present in many OB stars. The prospects of obtaining asteroseismic information for more rapidly rotating Beta Cep stars, which appear to prefer modes of higher l, are briefly discussed.

Optical readout with CCD cameras allows for the detection for the daily modulation in the direction of the dark matter wind, while several charge readout channels allow for the measurement of additional recoil properties. In this article, we show that the addition of the charge readout analysis to the CCD allows us too obtain a statistics-limited 90% C.L. upper limit on the $e^-$ rejection factor of $5.6\times10^{-6}$ for recoils with energies between 40 and 200 keV$_{\mathrm{ee}}$. In addition, requiring coincidence between charge signals and light in the CCD reduces CCD-specific backgrounds by more than two orders of magnitude.

After nuclear recoil cuts are applied to the data, we find 105 candidate events in the energy range 80 - 200 keV, which is consistent with the expected cosmogenic neutron background. Using this data, we obtain a limit on the spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross-section of 2.0 \times 10^{-33} cm^2 at a WIMP mass of 115 GeV/c^2. Opacity-sampled line-blanketed model atmospheres have been used to derive atmospheric properties and elemental abundances. All the stars are moderately metal-poor compared with the Sun ([Fe/H] ~ -0.5). Four stars are nitrogen-rich, two of these are carbon-rich, and at least four appear to be neon-rich. The data are insufficient to rule out binarity in any of the sample. The surface composition and locus of the N-rich He-sdBs are currently best explained by the merger of two helium white dwarfs, or possibly by the merger of a helium white dwarf with a post-sdB white dwarf. C-rich He-sdBs require further investigation.

An abundance analysis is presented for IRAS 18095+2704 (V887 Her), a post-AGB star and proto-planetary nebula. The analysis is based on high-resolution optical spectra from the McDonald Observatory and the Special Astrophysical Observatory. Standard analysis using a classical Kurucz model atmosphere and the line analysis program MOOG provides the atmospheric parameters: Teff = 6500 K, log g = +0.5, and a microturbulent velocity Vt = 4.7 km/s and [Fe/H] = -0.9. Extraction of these parameters is based on excitation of FeI lines, ionization equilibrium between neutral and ions of Mg, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Fe, and the wings of hydrogen Paschen lines. Elemental abundances are obtained for 22 elements and upper limits for an additional four elements. These results show that the star's atmosphere has not experienced a significant number of C- and s-process enriching thermal pulses. Abundance anomalies as judged relative to the compositions of unevolved and less-evolved normal stars of a similar metallicity include Al, Y, and Zr deficiencies with respect to Fe of about 0.5 dex. Judged by composition, the star resembles a RV Tauri variable that has been mildly affected by dust-gas separation reducing the abundances of the elements of highest condensation temperature. This separation may occur in the stellar wind. There are indications that the standard 1D LTE analysis is not entirely appropriate for IRAS 18095+2704. These include a supersonic macroturbulent velocity of 23 km/s, emission in H-alpha and the failure of predicted profiles to fit observed profiles of H-beta and H-gamma.

An abundance analysis based on a high-resolution spectrum is presented for a newly discovered post-AGB star in the globular cluster M79. The surprising result is that the iron abundance of the star is apparently about 0.6 dex less than that of the cluster's red giants as reported by published studies including a recent high-resolution spectroscopic analysis by Carretta and colleagues. Abundances relative to iron appear to be the same for the post-AGB star and the red giants for the 15 common elements. It is suggested that the explanation for the lower abundances of the post-AGB star may be that its atmospheric structure differs from that of a classical atmosphere; the temperature gradient may be flatter than predicted by a classical atmosphere.

We report a multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei star 12 Lacertae. 750 hours of high-quality differential photoelectric Stromgren, Johnson and Geneva time-series photometry were obtained with 9 telescopes during 190 nights. Our frequency analysis results in the detection of 23 sinusoidal signals in the light curves. Eleven of those correspond to independent pulsation modes, and the remainder are combination frequencies. We find some slow aperiodic variability such as that seemingly present in several Beta Cephei stars. We perform mode identification from our colour photometry, derive the spherical degree l for the five strongest modes unambiguously and provide constraints on l for the weaker modes. We find a mixture of modes of 0 <= l <= 4. In particular, we prove that the previously suspected rotationally split triplet within the modes of 12 Lac consists of modes of different l; their equal frequency splitting must thus be accidental.
One of the periodic signals we detected in the light curves is argued to be a linearly stable mode excited to visible amplitude by nonlinear mode coupling via a 2:1 resonance. We also find a low-frequency signal in the light variations whose physical nature is unclear; it could be a parent or daughter mode resonantly coupled. The remaining combination frequencies are consistent with simple light-curve distortions.
The range of excited pulsation frequencies of 12 Lac may be sufficiently large that it cannot be reproduced by standard models. We suspect that the star has a larger metal abundance in the pulsational driving zone, a hypothesis also capable of explaining the presence of Beta Cephei stars in the LMC.
