Despite this, the experimental difficulty in measuring low temperature real space images of the ferroelectric domains has meant that the local behaviour of ferroelectric domains emergent below the 38 K phase transition have yet to be realised. This work presents real space images of the ferroelectric domains, and uses piezo force microscopy to, as a function of temperature, probe the onset of piezoelectricty and ferroelectricity across the 38 K transition

We present a comprehensive study of CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ using bulk sensitive hard and soft x-ray spectroscopy combined with local-density approximation (LDA) + dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations. Correlation effects on both the Cu and Ru ions can be observed. From the Cu $2p$ core level spectra we deduce the presence of magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions hybridized with a reservoir of itinerant electrons. The strong photon energy dependence of the valence band allows us to disentangle the Ru, Cu, and O contributions and thus to optimize the DMFT calculations. The calculated spin and charge susceptibilities show that the transition metal oxide CaCu$_3$Ru$_4$O$_{12}$ must be classified as a Kondo system and that the Kondo temperature is in the range of 500-1000 K.

We investigate spin pumping and the effective spin mixing conductance in heterostructures based on magnetic oxide trilayers composed of La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO), LaNiO$_3$ (LNO), and SrRuO$_3$ (SRO). The heterostructures serve as a model system for an estimation of the effective spin mixing conductance at the different interfaces. Our results show that by introducing a LNO interlayer between LSMO and SRO, the total effective spin mixing conductance increases due to the much more favourable interface of LSMO/LNO with respect to the LSMO/SRO interface. Neverheless, the spin current into the SRO does not decrease because of the spin diffusion length of $λ_\text{LNO}\approx$3.3 nm in the LNO. This value is two times higher than that of SRO. Our results show the potential of using oxide interfaces to tune the effective spin mixing conductance in heterostructures and to bring novel functionalities into spintronics by implementing complex oxides.

Nano resonators in which mechanical vibrations and spin waves can be coupled are an intriguing concept that can be used in quantum information processing to transfer information between different states of excitation. Until now, the fabrication of free standing magnetic nanostructures which host long lived spin wave excitatons and may be suitable as mechanical resonators seemed elusive. We demonstrate the fabrication of free standing monocrystalline yttrium iron garnet (YIG) 3D nanoresonators with nearly ideal magnetic properties. The freestanding 3D structures are obtained using a complex lithography process including room temperature deposition and lift-off of amorphous YIG and subsequent crystallization by annealing. The crystallization nucleates from the substrate and propagates across the structure even around bends over distances of several micrometers to form e.g. monocrystalline resonators as shown by transmission electron microscopy. Spin wave excitations in individual nanostructures are imaged by time resolved scanning Kerr microscopy. The narrow linewidth of the magnetic excitations indicates a Gilbert damping constant of only $α= 2.6 \times 10^{-4}$ rivalling the best values obtained for epitaxial YIG thin film material. The new fabrication process represents a leap forward in magnonics and magnon mechanics as it provides 3D YIG structures of unprecedented quality. At the same time it demonstrates a completely new route towards the fabrication of free standing crystalline nano structures which may be applicable also to other material systems.

Rare $d$-electron derived heavy-fermion properties of the solid-solution series LaCu$_3$Ru$_x$Ti$_{4-x}$O$_{12}$ were studied for $1 \leq x \leq 4$ by resistivity, susceptibility, specific-heat measurements, and magnetic-resonance techniques. The pure ruthenate ($x = 4$) is a heavy-fermion metal characterized by a resistivity proportional to $T^2$ at low temperatures $T$. The coherent Kondo lattice formed by the localized Ru 4$d$ electrons is screened by the conduction electrons leading to strongly enhanced effective electron masses. By increasing titanium substitution the Kondo lattice becomes diluted resulting in single-ion Kondo properties like in the paradigm $4f$-based heavy-fermion compound Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$Cu$_{2.05}$Si$_2$ [M. Ocko {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{64}, 195106 (2001)]. In LaCu$_3$Ru$_x$Ti$_{4-x}$O$_{12}$ the heavy-fermion behavior finally breaks down on crossing the metal-to-insulator transition close to $x = 2$.

Hexagonal YMnO$_3$ is well known for the co-occurrence of ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism at low temperatures. Using temperature-dependent spectroscopic ellipsometry at an $a$-plane oriented single crystal, we show how the dielectric function is affected by the magnetic order transition at the Néel temperature. We focus especially on the pronounced charge transfer transitions around (1.6-1.7)eV which are strongly connected to Mn 3$d$ electrons. If described with a Bose-Einstein model, the temperature dependency of their energy and broadening is characterized by effective phonon energies not larger than 8meV. We argue that this is a hint for the occurrence of a soft phonon mode related to the antiferromagnetic phase transition. This is observed in both tensor components of the dielectric function, parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic $c$-axis. Furthermore, a suitable parametrization for the uniaxial dielectric function is presented for the NIR-VUV spectral range. The broad transitions at energies higher than a critical point-like bandgap do not show a clear temperature dependence. We also observe some weak discrete absorption features around the strong charge transfer transitions with energies matching well to low-temperature photoluminescence signals.

Marginal amounts of %impurities $(< 2%)$ were detected $Ln=$ Gd, Er, and Tm. %Significant amounts of impurity phases were found for $Ln=$ Ce and Yb. All the samples investigated crystallize in the space group $Im\bar{3}$ with lattice constants that follow the lanthanide contraction. The lattice constant of the Ce compound reveals the presence of Ce$^{4+}$ leading to the composition Ce$_{1/2}$Cu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$. From magnetic susceptibility and electron-spin resonance experiments it can be concluded that the copper ions always carry a spin $S=1/2$ and order antiferromagnetically close to 25\,K. The Curie-Weiss temperatures can approximately be calculated assuming a two-sublattice model corresponding to the copper and lanthanide ions, respectively. It seems that the magnetic moments of the heavy rare earths are weakly coupled to the copper spins, while for the light lanthanides no such coupling was found. The $4f$ moments remain paramagnetic down to the lowest temperatures, with the exception of the Tm compound, which indicates enhanced Van-Vleck magnetism due to a non-magnetic singlet ground state of the crystal-field split $4f$ manifold. From specific-heat measurements we accurately determined the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature and obtained information on the crystal-field states of the rare-earth ions. The heat-capacity results also revealed the presence of a small fraction of Ce$^{3+}$ in a magnetic $4f^1$ state.

Many transition-metal oxides show very large ("colossal") magnitudes of the dielectric constant and thus have immense potential for applications in modern microelectronics and for the development of new capacitance-based energy-storage devices. In the present work, we thoroughly discuss the mechanisms that can lead to colossal values of the dielectric constant, especially emphasising effects generated by external and internal interfaces, including electronic phase separation. In addition, we provide a detailed overview and discussion of the dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 and related systems, which is today's most investigated material with colossal dielectric constant. Also a variety of further transition-metal oxides with large dielectric constants are treated in detail, among them the system La2-xSrxNiO4 where electronic phase separation may play a role in the generation of a colossal dielectric constant.

In the present work the authors report results of broadband dielectric spectroscopy on various samples of CaCu3Ti4O12, including so far only rarely investigated single crystalline material. The measurements extend up to 1.3 GHz, covering more than nine frequency decades. We address the question of the origin of the colossal dielectric constants and of the relaxational behavior in this material, including the second relaxation reported in several recent works. For this purpose, the dependence of the temperature- and frequency-dependent dielectric properties on different tempering and surface treatments of the samples and on ac-field amplitude are investigated. Broadband spectra of a single crystal are analyzed by an equivalent circuit description, assuming two highly resistive layers in series to the bulk. Good fits could be achieved, including the second relaxation, which also shows up in single crystals. The temperature- and frequency-dependent intrinsic conductivity of CCTO is consistent with the Variable Range Hopping model. The second relaxation is sensitive to surface treatment and, in contrast to the main relaxation, also is strongly affected by the applied ac voltage. Concerning the origin of the two insulating layers, we discuss a completely surface-related mechanism assuming the formation of a metal-insulator diode and a combination of surface and internal barriers.

The unusual temperature dependence of phonon eigenfrequencies, dampings and ionic plasma frequencies of low lying phonon modes are analyzed and discussed in detail. Electronic excitations below 4 eV are identified as transitions between full and empty hybridized oxygen-copper bands and between oxygen-copper and unoccupied Ti 3d bands. The unusually small band gap determined from the dc-conductivity (~200 meV) compares well with the optical results.

The occurrence of giant dielectric constants up to 10^5 is revealed to be due to electrode polarization. Aside of dc and ac conductivity contributions, we detect two intrinsic relaxation processes that can be ascribed to ionic hopping between different off-center positions. In both materials we find evidence for charge transport via hopping of localized charge carriers. In the infrared region, three phonon bands are detected, followed by several electronic excitations. In addition, these materials provide further examples for the occurrence of a superlinear power law in the broadband ac conductivity, which recently was proposed to be a universal feature of all disordered matter.

We measured the dielectric constant and conductivity of single crystals in an exceptionally broad frequency range up to GHz frequencies and at temperatures from 25 - 500 K. The detected dielectric constant is unusually high (reaching values up to 105) and almost constant in a broad frequency and temperature range. Cu2Ta4O12 possesses a crystal structure similar to CaCu3Ti4O12, the compound for which such an unusually high dielectric constant was first observed. An analysis of the results using a simple equivalent circuit and measurements with different types of contact revealed that extrinsic interfacial polarization effects, derived from surface barrier capacitors are the origin of the observed giant dielectric constants. The intrinsic properties of Cu2Ta4O12 are characterized by a (still relatively high) dielectric constant in the order of 100 and by charge transport via hopping conduction of Anderson-localized charge carriers.

Samples with x=0.1 and 0.2 reveal purely semiconducting resistivity behavior along c and the charge transport is close to localization within the ab-plane. A strong anisotropy in the magnetic susceptibility appears at temperatures below 100 K. Moreover magnetic ordering in c-direction with a moment of order 0.01 mu_B/f.u. occurs at low temperatures. On doping the low-temperature linear term of the heat capacity becomes reduced significantly and probably is dominated by spin fluctuations. Finally, the optical conductivity reveals the anisotropic character of the dc resistance, with the in-plane conductance roughly following a Drude-type behavior and an insulating response along c.
