As LHC's Run3 unfolds, we peer deeper into the couplings of the 125GeV Higgs ($h_{125}$) and also test for extra scalars. Even before such extra scalars are found, one can probe them by using the fact that theories with multiple Higgs doublets allow for substantial deviations of the couplings of $h_{125}$ from their SM values. Indeed, the observed couplings already place stringent limits on such theories. We investigate the curious possibility that $h_{125}$ couples to the top quark mostly as a scalar, while it couples to the bottom quark mostly as a pseudoscalar. This possibility was allowed by 2017 data for the so-called C2HDM; a two Higgs doublet model with a single source of explicit CP violation. It was shown recently that this possibility disappears when using the full experimental data of 2024. Here we discuss a three Higgs doublet with explicit CP violation (C3HDM), and show that the curious CP-even/CP-odd $t$/$b$ possibility is partly resuscitated, prompting further experimental exploration of this prospect.

The complex two-Higgs doublet model (C2HDM) is one of the simplest extensions of the Standard Model with a source of CP-violation in the scalar sector. It has a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, softly broken by a complex coefficient. There are four ways to implement this symmetry in the fermion sector, leading to models known as Type-I, Type-II, Lepton-Specific and Flipped. In the latter three models, there is a priori the surprising possibility that the 125 GeV Higgs boson couples mostly as a scalar to top quarks, while it couples mostly as a pseudoscalar to bottom quarks. This ``maximal'' scenario was still possible with the data available in 2017. Since then, there have been more data on the 125 GeV Higgs boson, direct searches for CP-violation in angular correlations of $τ$-leptons produced in Higgs boson decays, new results on the electron electric dipole moment, new constraints from LHC searches for additional Higgs bosons and new results on $b\to s γ$ transitions. Highlighting the crucial importance of the physics results of LHC's Run 2, we combine all these experiments and show that the ``maximal'' scenario is now excluded in all models. Still, one can have a pseudoscalar component in $h τ\barτ$ couplings in the Lepton-Specific case as large as $87\%$ of the scalar component for all mass orderings of the neutral scalar bosons.

We present a novel Artificial Intelligence approach for Beyond the Standard Model parameter space scans by augmenting an Evolutionary Strategy with Novelty Detection. Our approach leverages the power of Evolutionary Strategies, previously shown to quickly converge to the valid regions of the parameter space, with a \emph{novelty reward} to continue exploration once converged. Taking the $Z_3$ 3HDM as our Physics case, we show how our methodology allows us to quickly explore highly constrained multidimensional parameter spaces, providing up to eight orders of magnitude higher sampling efficiency when compared with pure random sampling and up to four orders of magnitude when compared to random sampling around the alignment limit. In turn, this enables us to explore regions of the parameter space that have been hitherto overlooked, leading to the possibility of novel phenomenological realisations of the $Z_3$ 3HDM that had not been considered before.

We study the phenomenological differences between the two common incarnations of this so-called Type-Z 3HDM. We point out that the differences between the two models arise from the scalar potential only. Thus we focus on observables that involve the scalar self-couplings. We find it difficult to uncover features that can uniquely set apart the $Z_3$ variant of the model. However, by studying the dependence of the trilinear Higgs couplings on the nonstandard masses, we have been able to isolate some of the exclusive indicators for the $Z_2\times Z_2$ version of the Type-Z 3HDM. This highlights the importance of precision measurements of the trilinear Higgs couplings.

These constraints must be implemented on both the neutral (BFB-n) and charged (BFB-c) directions. The exact necessary and sufficient BFB conditions are unknown in the Z2xZ2 case. We develop a general strategy using lower bounds to find sufficient conditions for BFB-n and BFB-c and apply it to these symmetries. In addition, we investigate the concern that the use of safe sufficient conditions can ignore valid points which would yield distinct physical consequences. This is done by performing a full phenomenological simulation of the U(1)xU(1) and U(1)xZ2 models, where exact necessary and sufficient BFB conditions are possible. We look specifically at the points allowed by exact solutions but precluded by safe lower bounds. We found no evidence of remarkable new effects, partly reassuring the use of the lower bounds we propose here, for those potentials where no exact necessary and sufficient BFB conditions are known.

We consider the Type-Z three Higgs doublet model imposed by a softly broken $Z_3$ symmetry. We take into account all theoretical and experimental constraints, highlighting the importance of perturbative unitarity and bounded from below conditions that we develop here, and which have a strong impact on $B \rightarrow X_s γ$. Since there can be cancellations between the two charged Higgs in $B \rightarrow X_s γ$ (and in $h \rightarrow γγ$), the lower bounds obtained on the charged Higgs masses are alleviated. We also discuss in detail the important physical differences between exact alignment and approximate alignment, and present some useful benchmark points.

We present the one-loop electroweak renormalization of the CP-violating 2-Higgs-Doublet Model with softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry (C2HDM). The existence of CP violation in the scalar sector of the model leads to a quite unique process of renormalization, since it requires the introduction of several non-physical parameters. The C2HDM will thus have more independent counterterms than independent renormalized parameters. As a consequence, different combinations of counterterms can be taken as independent for the same set of independent renormalized parameters. We compare the behaviour of selected combinations in specific NLO processes, which are assured to be gauge independent via a simple prescription. FeynMaster 2 is used to derive the Feynman rules, counterterms and one-loop processes in a simultaneously automatic and flexible way. This illustrates its use as an ideal tool to renormalize models such as the C2HDM and investigate them at NLO.

We discuss the $Z_2$ symmetric two Higgs doublet model with a real soft breaking term (real 2HDM). We explain in detail why it is not tenable to assume CP conservation in the scalar sector to keep the dimension two term real, while CP is violated by the dimension four Yukawa couplings. We propose the calculation of the infinite tadpole of the (would-be) pseudoscalar neutral scalar. We construct a simple toy model with the same flaws, where the unrenormalizable infinity is easier to calculate. We then turn our attention to the same tadpole in the real 2HDM. We spearhead this effort focusing on diagrams involving solely bare quantities. This involves hundreds of Feynman three-loop diagrams that could feed the CP violation from the quark into the scalar sector, and is only possible with state of the art automatic computation tools. Remarkably, some intermediate results agree when using three independent derivations, including the peculiar cancellation of the leading pole divergence due to a subtle interplay between masses and the Jarlskog invariant, which we calculate analytically. The calculation is not complete however, since the full two-loop renormalization of the real 2HDM is not yet available in the literature. Still, we argue convincingly that there is an irremovable infinity.

The complex 2HDM (C2HDM) is the most general CP-violating two Higgs doublet model that possesses a softly-broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. However, the physical consequences of the model cannot depend on the basis of scalar fields used to define it. Thus, to get a better sense of the significance of the C2HDM parameters, we have analyzed this model by employing a basis-independent formalism. This formalism involves transforming to the Higgs basis (which is defined up to an arbitrary complex phase) and identifying quantities that are invariant with respect to this phase degree of freedom. Using this method, we have obtained the constraints that enforce the softly-broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. One can then relate the C2HDM parameters to basis-independent quantities up to a two-fold ambiguity. We then show how this remaining ambiguity is resolved. We also examine the possibility of spontaneous CP violation when the scalar potential of the C2HDM is explicitly CP-conserving. Basis-independent constraints are presented that govern the presence of spontaneous CP violation.

Besides the standard scalar doublet, there are two lepton-number-carrying scalars, a nearly inert SU2 doublet and a singlet. Neutrino masses result from the spontaneous violation of lepton number, implying the existence of a Nambu-Goldstone boson. Such "majoron" would be copiously produced in stars, leading to stringent astrophysical constraints. We study the profile of the Higgs bosons in this model, including their effective couplings to the vector bosons and their invisible decay branching ratios. A consistent electroweak symmetry breaking pattern emerges with a compressed spectrum of scalars in which the "Standard Model" Higgs boson can have a sizeable invisible decay into the invisible majorons.

This is the second of a series of papers that explores the physical parameterization, sum rules and unitarity bounds arising from a non-minimal scalar sector of the Standard Model (SM) that consists of N Higgs doublets. In this paper, we focus on the structure and implication of the Yukawa interactions that couple the N scalar doublets to the SM fermions. We employ the charged Higgs basis, which is defined as the basis of scalar fields such that the neutral scalar field vacuum expectation value resides entirely in one of the N scalar doublet fields, and the charged components of the remaining N-1 scalar doublet fields are the physical (mass-eigenstate) charged Higgs fields. Based on the structure of the Yukawa Lagrangian of the model (and as a consequence of tree-level unitarity), one may deduce numerous sum rules, several of which have not appeared previously in the literature. These sum rules can be used to uncover intimate relations between the structure of the Higgs-fermion couplings and the scalar/gauge couplings. In particular, we show that the approximate alignment limit, in which the W+W- and ZZ couplings to the observed Higgs boson are approximately SM-like, imposes significant constraints on the Higgs-fermion couplings.

The model has been used as a benchmark model to search for CP-violation at the LHC and as a possible explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe. In this work, we re-analyse in full detail the softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetric complex two-Higgs doublet model (C2HDM). We provide the code C2HDM_HDECAY implementing the C2HDM in the well-known HDECAY program which calculates the decay widths including the state-of-the-art higher order QCD corrections and the relevant off-shell decays. Using C2HDM_HDECAY together with the most relevant theoretical and experimental constraints, including electric dipole moments (EDMs), we review the parameter space of the model and discuss its phenomenology. In particular, we find cases where large CP-odd couplings to fermions are still allowed and provide benchmark points for these scenarios. We examine the prospects of discovering CP-violation at the LHC and show how theoretically motivated measures of CP-violation correlate with observables.

We study the CP violating ZZZ vertex in the two-Higgs doublet model, which is a probe of a Jarlskog-type invariant in the extended Higgs sector. The form factor $f_4^Z$ is evaluated at one loop in a general $R_ξ$ gauge and its magnitude is estimated in the realistic parameter space. Then we turn to the decoupling limit of the two-Higgs doublet model, where the extra scalars are heavy and the physics can be described by the Standard Model supplemented by higher-dimensional operators. The leading operator contributing to $f_4^Z$ at one loop is identified. The CP violating ZZZ vertex is not generated in the effective theory by dimension-8 operators, but instead arises only at the dimension-12 level, which implies an additional suppression by powers of the heavy Higgs mass scale.

If the scalar sector of the Standard Model is non-minimal, one might expect multiple generations of the hypercharge-1/2 scalar doublet analogous to the generational structure of the fermions. In this work, we examine the structure of a Higgs sector consisting of N Higgs doublets (where N \geq 2). It is particularly convenient to work in the so-called charged Higgs basis, in which the neutral Higgs vacuum expectation value resides entirely in the first Higgs doublet, and the charged components of remaining N-1 Higgs doublets are mass-eigenstate fields.
We elucidate the interactions of the gauge bosons with the physical Higgs scalars and the Goldstone bosons and show that they are determined by an Nx2N matrix. This matrix depends on (N-1)(2N-1) real parameters that are associated with the mixing of the neutral Higgs fields in the charged Higgs basis. Among these parameters, N-1 are unphysical (and can be removed by rephasing the physical charged Higgs fields), and the remaining 2(N-1)^2 parameters are physical. We also demonstrate a particularly simple form for the cubic interaction and some of the quartic interactions of the Goldstone bosons with the physical Higgs scalars. These results are applied in the derivation of Higgs coupling sum rules and tree-level unitarity bounds that restrict the size of the quartic scalar couplings. In particular, new applications to three Higgs doublet models with an order-4 CP symmetry and with a Z_3 symmetry, respectively, are presented.

We discuss the validity of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SM EFT) as the low-energy effective theory for the two-Higgs-doublet Model (2HDM). Using the up-to-date Higgs signal strength measurements at the LHC, one can obtain a likelihood function for the Wilson coefficients of dimension-6 operators in the EFT Lagrangian. Given the matching between the 2HDM and the EFT, the constraints on the Wilson coefficients can be translated into constraints on the parameters of the 2HDM Lagrangian. We discuss under which conditions such a procedure correctly reproduces the true limits on the 2HDM. Finally, we employ the SM EFT to identify the pattern of the Higgs boson couplings that are needed to improve the fit to the current Higgs data. To this end, one needs, simultaneously, to increase the top Yukawa coupling, decrease the bottom Yukawa coupling, and induce a new contact interaction of the Higgs boson with gluons. We comment on how these modifications can be realized in the 2HDM extended by new colored particles.

The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond.

Neutrino mass generation through the Higgs mechanism not only suggests the need to reconsider the physics of electroweak symmetry breaking from a new perspective, but also provides a new theoretically consistent and experimentally viable paradigm. We illustrate this by describing the main features of the electroweak symmetry breaking sector of the simplest type-II seesaw model with spontaneous breaking of lepton number. After reviewing the relevant "theoretical" and astrophysical restrictions on the Higgs sector, we perform an analysis of the sensitivities of Higgs boson searches at the ongoing ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC, including not only the new contributions to the decay channels present in the Standard Model (SM) but also genuinely non-SM Higgs boson decays, such as "invisible" Higgs boson decays to majorons. We find sensitivities that are likely to be reached at the upcoming Run of the experiments.

After analysing all data gathered during the Large Hadron Collider run 1, the measurement of the Higgs couplings to the remaining SM particles already restricts the parameter space of many extensions of the SM. However, there is still room for very large CP-odd Yukawa couplings to light quarks and leptons while the top-quark Yukawa coupling is already very constrained by current data. Although indirect measurements of electric dipole moments play a very important role in constraining the pseudo-scalar components of the Yukawa couplings, we argue that a direct measurement of the ratio of pseudoscalar to scalar couplings should be one of the top priorities for the LHC run 2.

We will focus on some very interesting scenarios where unexpectedly the light Higgs couplings to leptons and to b-quarks can have a large pseudoscalar component with a vanishing scalar component. Predictions for the allowed parameter space at end of the next run with a total collected luminosity of $300 \, fb^{-1}$ and $3000 \, fb^{-1}$ are also discussed. These scenarios are not excluded by present data and most probably will survive the next LHC run. However, a measurement of the mixing angle $φ_τ$, between the scalar and pseudoscalar component of the 125 GeV Higgs, in the decay $h \to τ^+ τ^-$ will be able to probe many of these scenarios, even with low luminosity. Similarly, a measurement of $φ_t$ in the vertex $\bar t t h$ could help to constrain the low $\tan β$ region in the Type I model.

For weak-scale breaking of lepton number the invisible decays of the CP- even Higgs bosons to the majoron lead to potentially copious sources of events with large missing energy. Using LHC results we study how the constraints on invisible decays of the Higgs boson restrict the relevant parameters, substantially extending those previously derived from LEP and shedding light on spontaneous lepton number violation.

We compute the decay of such a mixed state into $Z γ$, and we study its properties in the context of the complex two Higgs doublet model, analysing the effect of the current measurements on the four versions of this model. We show that a measurement of the $h \rightarrow Z γ$ rate at a level consistent with the SM can be used to place interesting constraints on the pseudoscalar component. It has been pointed out recently that current experiments still allow for a two Higgs doublet model where the $h b \bar{b}$ coupling ($k_D m_b/v$) is negative; a sign opposite to that of the Standard Model. Due to the importance of delayed decoupling in the $h H^+ H^-$ coupling, $h \rightarrow γγ$ improved measurements will have a strong impact on this issue. For the same reason, measurements or even bounds on $h \rightarrow Z γ$ are potentially interesting. In this article, we revisit this problem, highlighting the crucial importance of $h \rightarrow VV$, which can be understood with simple arguments. We show that the impacts on $k_D<0$ models of both $h \rightarrow b \bar{b}$ and $h \rightarrow τ^+ τ^-$ are very sensitive to input values for the gluon fusion production mechanism; in contrast, $h \rightarrow γγ$ and $h \rightarrow Z γ$ are not. We also inquire if the search for $h \rightarrow Z γ$ and its interplay with $h \rightarrow γγ$ will impact the sign of the $h b \bar{b}$ coupling. Finally, we study these issues in the context of the Flipped two Higgs doublet model.

Unlike the traditional "minimal" LR models many of our example settings support a perfect gauge coupling unification even if the LR scale is in the LHC domain at a price of only (a few copies of) one or two types of extra fields pulled down to the TeV-scale ballpark. We discuss the main aspects of a potentially realistic model building conforming the basic constraints from the quark and lepton sector flavour structure, proton decay limits, etc. We pay a special attention to the theoretical uncertainties related to the limited information about the underlying unified framework in the bottom-up approach, in particular, to their role in the possible extraction of the LR-breaking scale. We observe a general tendency for the models without new coloured states in the TeV domain to be on the verge of incompatibility with the proton stability constraints.

The predicted correlation between the atmospheric mixing angle theta23 and the magnitude of theta13 leads to an allowed region substantially smaller than indicated by neutrino oscillation global fits. Moreover, the scheme correlates CP violation in neutrino oscillations with the octant of the atmospheric mixing parameter theta23 in such a way that, for example, maximal mixing necessarily violates CP. We construct lists of supersymmetric models with extended gauge groups at intermediate steps, all of which are based on SO(10) unification. We consider three different kinds of setups: (i) The model has exactly one additional intermediate scale with a left-right (LR) symmetric group; (ii) SO(10) is broken to the LR group via an intermediate Pati-Salam (PS) scale; and (iii) the LR group is broken into $SU(3)_{c} \times SU(2)_{L} \times U(1)_{R} \times U(1)_{B-L}$, before breaking to the SM group. We use sets of conditions, which we call the "sliding mechanism", which yield unification with the extended gauge group(s) allowed at arbitrary intermediate energy scales. All models thus can have new gauge bosons within the reach of the LHC, in principle. We apply additional conditions, such as perturbative unification, renormalizability and anomaly cancellation and find that, despite these requirements, for the ansatz (i) with only one additional scale still around 50 different variants exist that can have an LR symmetry below 10 TeV. For the more complicated schemes (ii) and (iii) literally thousands of possible variants exist, and for scheme (ii) we have also found variants with very low PS scales. We also discuss possible experimental tests of the models from measurements of SUSY masses. Assuming mSugra boundary conditions we calculate certain combinations of soft terms, called "invariants", for the different classes of models. Values for all the invariants can be classified into a small number of sets, which contain information about the class of models and, in principle, the scale of beyond-MSSM physics, even in case the extended gauge group is broken at an energy beyond the reach of the LHC.

When performing a full calculation within the Standard Model or its extensions, it is crucial that one utilizes a consistent set of signs for the gauge couplings and gauge fields. Unfortunately, the literature is plagued with differing signs and notations. We present all Standard Model Feynman rules, including ghosts, in a convention-independent notation, and we table the conventions in close to 40 books and reviews.

We revisit the potential of a Linear Collider concerning the study of lepton flavour violation, in view of new LHC bounds and of the (very) recent developments in lepton physics. Working in the framework of a type I supersymmetric seesaw, we evaluate the prospects of observing seesaw-induced lepton flavour violating final states of the type e μ+ missing energy, arising from e+ e- and e- e- collisions. In both cases we address the potential background from standard model and supersymmetric charged currents. We also explore the possibility of electron and positron beam polarisation. The statistical significance of the signal, even in the absence of kinematical and/or detector cuts, renders the observation of such flavour violating events feasible over large regions of the parameter space. We further consider the μ-μ- + E^T_miss final state in the e- e- beam option finding that, due to a very suppressed background, this process turns out to be a truly clear probe of a supersymmetric seesaw, assuming the latter to be the unique source of lepton flavour violation.

Abstract:
It has been pointed out that supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model can induce significant changes to the theoretical prediction of the ratio $Γ(K\rightarrow eν)/Γ(K\rightarrowμν)\equiv R_{K}$, through lepton flavour violating couplings. In this work we carry out a full computation of all one-loop corrections to the relevant $ν\ell H^{+}$ vertex, and discuss the new contributions to $R_{K}$ arising in the context of different constrained (minimal supergravity inspired) models which succeed in accounting for neutrino data, further considering the possibility of accommodating a near future observation of a $μ\to eγ$ transition. We also re-evaluate the prospects for $R_{K}$ in the framework of unconstrained supersymmetric models. In all cases, we address the question of whether it is possible to saturate the current experimental sensitivity on $R_{K}$ while in agreement with the recent limits on $B$-meson decay observables (in particular BR($B_{s}\toμ^+μ^-$) and R($B_{u}\toτν$)), as well as BR($τ\to e γ$) and available collider constraints. Our findings reveal that in view of the recent bounds, and even when enhanced by effective sources of flavour violation in the right-handed $\tilde{e}-\tildeτ$ sector, constrained supersymmetric (seesaw) models typically provide excessively small contributions to $R_{K}$. Larger contributions can be found in more general settings, where the charged Higgs mass can be effectively lowered, and even further enhanced in the unconstrained MSSM. However, our analysis clearly shows that even in this last case SUSY contributions to $R_{K}$ are still unable to saturate the current experimental bounds on this observable, especially due to a strong tension with the $B_{u}\toτν$ bound.

Here we study a SUSY model in which the left-right symmetry is broken by triplets at a high scale, but significantly below the GUT scale. Sparticle spectra in this model differ from the usual constrained MSSM expectations and these changes affect the relic abundance of the lightest neutralino. We discuss changes for the standard stau (and stop) co-annihilation, the Higgs funnel and the focus point regions. The model has potentially large lepton flavour violation in both, left and right, scalar leptons and thus allows, in principle, also for flavoured co-annihilation. We also discuss lepton flavour signals due to violating decays of the second lightest neutralino at the LHC, which can be as large as 20 fb$^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV.

We discuss how this confrontation between high- and low-energy LFV observables may provide information about the underlying mechanism of LFV.

If interpreted as being due to the violation of lepton flavour, high-energy observables, such as large slepton mass splittings and flavour violating neutralino and slepton decays, are expected to be accompanied by low-energy manifestations of LFV such as radiative and three-body lepton decays. We discuss how to devise strategies based in the interplay of slepton mass splittings as might be observed at the LHC and low-energy LFV observables to derive important information on the underlying mechanism of LFV.
