This paper provides a comparison between the vibrational-specific state-to-state (StS) model for nitrogen plasma elaborated in Part I of this work and conventional two-temperature (2-T) models for simulating inductively coupled plasma (ICP) discharges under non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (NLTE) conditions. Simulations are performed within the multi-physics computational framework established for ICP in Part I. Based on the findings of Part I, the quasi-steady-state (QSS) assumption is validated in the plasma core, thereby enabling the calculation of global rate coefficients under this assumption. This facilitates the reduction of the StS model to a "consistent" macroscopic 2-T model. Results from the StS model for nitrogen ICP torch exhibit considerable discrepancies when compared against predictions from the widely utilized Park 2-T model. On the contrary, the comparison between the newly proposed 2-T model, consistently derived from the original vibronic StS model, and the full StS results demonstrate excellent agreement in terms of plasma core location, morphology, and peak temperature distributions. This demonstrates the ability of the proposed 2-T model to capture the energy transfer and reactive processes predicted by the comprehensive StS model. Additionally, the study identifies the vibrational-translational (VT) energy transfer term in the 2-T model as the predominant factor in dictating plasma core morphology. This suggests a strong sensitivity of the ICP flow field to heavy-impact vibrational excitations and dissociative events.

This work presents a vibrational and electronic state-to-state model for nitrogen plasma implemented within a multi-physics modular computational framework to study non-equilibrium effects in inductively coupled plasma (ICP) discharges. Within the computational framework, the set of vibronic (i.e., vibrational and electronic) master equations are solved in a tightly coupled fashion with the flow governing equations. This tight coupling eliminates the need for invoking any simplifying assumptions when computing the state of the plasma, thereby ensuring a higher degree of physical fidelity. To mitigate computational complexity, a maximum entropy coarse-graining strategy is deployed, effectively truncating the internal state space. The efficacy of this reduced StS model is empirically substantiated through zero-dimensional isochoric simulations. In these simulations, the results obtained from the reduced-order model are rigorously compared against those obtained from the full StS model, thereby confirming the accuracy of the reduced StS framework. The developed Coarse-grained StS model was employed to study the plasma discharge within the VKI Plasmatron facility. Our results reveal pronounced discrepancies between the plasma flow fields obtained from StS simulations and those derived from Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) models, which are conventionally used in the simulation of such facilities. The analysis demonstrates a substantial departure of the internal state populations of atoms and molecules from the Boltzmann distribution. These nonequilibrium effects have important consequences on the energy coupling dynamics, thereby impacting the overall morphology of the plasma discharge. A deeper analysis of the results demonstrates that the population distribution is in a Quasi-Steady-State in the hot plasma core.

This work constructs a rovibrational state-to-state model for the $\text{O}_2$+$\text{O}_2$ system leveraging high-fidelity potential energy surfaces and quasi-classical trajectory calculations. The model is used to investigate internal energy transfer and non-equilibrium reactive processes in dissociating environment using a master equation approach, whereby the kinetics of each internal rovibrational state is explicitly computed. To cope with the exponentially large number of elementary processes that characterize reactive bimolecular collisions, the internal states of the collision partner are assumed to follow a Boltzmann distribution at a prescribed internal temperature. This procedure makes the problem tractable, reducing the computational cost to a comparable scale with the $\text{O}_2$+O system. The constructed rovibrational-specific kinetic database covers the temperature range of 7500-20000 K. The analysis of the energy transfer and dissociation process in isochoric and isothermal conditions reveals that significant departures from the equilibrium Boltzmann distribution occur during the energy transfer and dissociation phase. Comparing the population distribution of the $\text{O}_2$ molecules against the $\text{O}_2$+O demonstrates a more significant extent of non-equilibrium characterized by a more diffuse distribution whereby the vibrational strands are more clearly identifiable. This is partly due to a less efficient mixing of the rovibrational states, which results in more diffuse rovibrational distributions in the quasi-steady-state distribution. The master equation analysis for the combined $\text{O}_3$+$\text{O}_4$ system reveals that the $\text{O}_2$+$\text{O}_2$ governs the early stage of energy transfer, while the $\text{O}_2$+O takes control of the dissociation dynamics. The findings will provide strong physical foundations for future development of oxygen chemistry.

Under strong laser fields, electrons in solids radiate high-harmonic fields by travelling through quantum pathways in Bloch bands in the sub-laser-cycle timescales. Understanding these pathways in the momentum space through the high-harmonic radiation can enable an all-optical ultrafast probe to observe coherent lightwave-driven processes and measure electronic structures as recently demonstrated for semiconductors. However, such demonstration has been largely limited for semimetals because the absence of the bandgap hinders an experimental characterization of the exact pathways. In this study, by combining electrostatic control of chemical potentials with HHG measurement, we resolve quantum pathways of massless Dirac fermions in graphene under strong laser fields. Electrical modulation of HHG reveals quantum interference between the multi-photon interband excitation channels. As the light-matter interaction deviates beyond the perturbative regime, elliptically polarized laser fields efficiently drive massless Dirac fermions via an intricate coupling between the interband and intraband transitions, which is corroborated by our theoretical calculations. Our findings pave the way for strong-laser-field tomography of Dirac electrons in various quantum semimetals and their ultrafast electronics with a gate control.

Ultrathin layered crystals of coordinated chromium(III) are promising not only as two-dimensional (2D) magnets but also as 2D near-infrared (NIR) emitters owing to long-range spin correlation and efficient transition between high and low-spin excited states of Cr3+ ions. In this study, we report on dual-band NIR photoluminescence (PL) of CrPS4 and show that its excitonic emission bifurcates into fluorescence and phosphorescence depending on thickness, temperature and defect density. In addition to the spectral branching, the biexponential decay of PL transients, also affected by the three factors, could be well described within a three-level kinetic model for Cr(III). In essence, the PL bifurcations are governed by activated reverse intersystem crossing from the low to high-spin states, and the transition barrier becomes lower for thinner 2D samples because of surface-localized defects. Our findings can be generalized to 2D solids of coordinated metals and will be valuable in realizing novel magneto-optic functions and devices.

This work presents a detailed investigation of the energy transfer and dissociation mechanisms in $\text{N}_2(\text{X}^1Σ_g^+)$+$\text{O}({}^3\text{P})$ and $\text{NO}(\text{X}^2Π)$+$\text{N}({}^4\text{S})$ systems using rovibrational-specific quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) and master equation analyses. The complete set of state-to-state kinetic data, obtained via QCT, allows for an in-depth investigation of the Zel'dovich mechanism leading to the formation of $\text{NO}$ molecules at microscopic and macroscopic scales. The master equation analysis demonstrates that the low-lying vibrational states of $\text{N}_2$ and $\text{NO}$ have dominant contributions to the $\text{NO}$ formation and the corresponding extinction of $\text{N}_2$ through the exchange process. For the considered temperature range, it is found that while nearly 50% of the dissociation processes for $\text{N}_2$ and $\text{NO}$ occurs in the molecular quasi-steady-state (QSS) regime, the amount of the Zel'dovich reaction is zero. Using the QSS approximation to model the Zel'dovich mechanism leads to an overestimation of $\text{NO}$ production by more than a factor of 4 in the high-temperature range. The breakdown of this well-known approximation has profound consequences for the approaches that heavily rely on the validity of QSS assumption in hypersonic applications. The investigation of the rovibrational state population dynamics reveals substantial similarity among different chemical systems for the energy transfer and the dissociation processes, providing promising physical foundations for the use of reduced-order strategies to other chemical systems without significant loss of accuracy.

Consider a multiplex network formed by two layers indicating social interactions: the first layer is a friendship network and the second layer is a network of business relations. In this duplex network each pair of individuals can be connected in different ways: they can be connected by a friendship but not connected by a business relation, they can be connected by a business relation without being friends, or they can be simultaneously friends and in a business relation. In the latter case we say that the links in different layers overlap. These three types of connections are called multilinks and the multidegree indicates the sum of multilinks of a given type that are incident to a given node. Previous models of opinion formation on multilayer networks have mostly neglected the effect of link overlap. Here we show that link overlap can have important effects in opinion formation. Indeed, emerging pattern of opinion formation can be significantly influenced by the statistical properties of multilinks, and in particular by the multidegree distribution. To quantitatively address this problem, we study a simple spin model, called the Ashkin-Teller model including 2-body and 4-body interactions between nodes in different layers. Here we fully investigate the rich phase diagram of this model which includes a large variety of phase transitions (PTs). Indeed the phase digram or the model displays continuous, discontinuous, successive discontinuous, and hybrid PTs.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are suitable hosts for the intercalation of extrinsic guest ions such as Li+, Na+ and K+ as the interlayer coupling is weak. This allows ion intercalation engineering of 2D materials, which may be a key to advancing technological applications in energy storage, neuromorphic electronics, and bioelectronics. However, ions that are extrinsic to the host materials possess challenges in fabrication of devices as there are extra steps of ion intercalation. This results in degradation of the long-term stability of the intercalated atomically thin structures. Here, we introduce large-area single-crystal ultra-thin layered MnO$_2$ via chemical vapor deposition, spontaneously intercalated by potassium ions during the synthesis. We studied the ultra-thin 2D K-MnO$_2$ in detail and showed that charge transport in these crystals is dominated by motion of hydrated potassium ions in the interlayer space. Moreover, K-MnO$_2$ crystals exhibit reversible layered-to-spinel phase transition accompanied by an optical contrast change based on the electrical and optical modulation of the potassium and the interlayer water concentration. We used the electric field driven ionic motion in K-MnO$_2$ based devices to demonstrate the memristive properties of two terminal devices. As a possible application we showed that K-MnO$_2$ memristors display synapse-like behavior such as short and long-term potentiation and depression as well as ionic coupling effects.

Many two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors represented by transition metal dichalcogenides have tunable optical bandgaps in the visible or near IR-range standing as a promising candidate for optoelectronic devices. Despite this potential, however, their photoreactions are not well understood or controversial in the mechanistic details. In this work, we report a unique thickness-dependent photoreaction sensitivity and a switchover between two competing reaction mechanisms in atomically thin chromium thiophosphate (CrPS4), a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic semiconductor. CrPS4 showed a threshold power density 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that for MoS2 obeying a photothermal reaction route. In addition, reaction cross section quantified with Raman spectroscopy revealed distinctive power dependences in the low and high power regimes. On the basis of optical in situ thermometric measurements and control experiments against O2, water, and photon energy, we proposed a photochemical oxidation mechanism involving singlet O2 in the low power regime with a photothermal route for the other. We also demonstrated a highly effective encapsulation with Al2O3 as a protection against the destructive photoinduced and ambient oxidations.

The hypergraph offers a platform to study structural properties emerging from more complicated and higher-order than pairwise interactions among constituents and dynamical behavior such as the spread of information or disease. Recently, a simplicial contagion problem was introduced and considered using a simplicial susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) model. Although recent studies have investigated random hypergraphs with a Poisson-type facet degree distribution, hypergraphs in the real world can have a power-law type of facet degree distribution. Here, we consider the SIS contagion problem on scale-free uniform hypergraphs and find that a continuous or hybrid epidemic transition occurs when the hub effect is dominant or weak, respectively. We determine the critical exponents analytically and numerically. We discuss the underlying mechanism of the hybrid epidemic transition.

We report on a systematic study of double-gap and four-gap phenolic resistive plate chambers (RPCs) for future high-η RPC triggers in the CMS. In the present study, we constructed real-sized double-gap and four-gap RPCs with gap thicknesses of 1.6 and 0.8 mm, respectively, with 2-mm-thick phenolic high-pressure-laminated (HPL) plates. We examined the prototype RPCs for cosmic rays and 100 GeV muons provided by the SPS H4 beam line at CERN. We applied maximum gamma rates of 1.5 kHz cm-2 provided by 137Cs sources at Korea University and the GIF++ irradiation facility installed at the SPS H4 beam line to examine the rate capabilities of the prototype RPCs. In contrast to the case of the four-gap RPCs, we found the relatively high threshold was conducive to effectively suppressing the rapid increase of strip cluster sizes of muon hits with high voltage, especially when measuring the narrow-pitch strips. The gamma-induced currents drawn in the four-gap RPC were about one-fourth of those drawn in the double-gap RPC. The rate capabilities of both RPC types, proven through the present testing using gamma-ray sources, far exceeded the maximum rate expected in the new high-η endcap RPCs planned for future phase-II LHC runs.
