This paper aims to find out phonological complications in Balochi relevant to metathesis. Data for the research have been collected from daily conversation, books and Balochi dictionaries and have been analyzed through Feature Geometry. This study identifies CC (consonant – consonant) metathesis. It highlights the behavior of different phonemes that causes metathesis to occur. Phonemes with weaker acoustic cues and those with strong acoustic signals compete with each other for a better position in a syllable. The clusters that are not accepted by the language grammar adopt a reverse sequence through this process. In addition, stress and onset requirement also are factors that play significant role in metathesis in Balochi.

The accumulation of recent findings from an archaeological standpoint observed from different parts of Balochistan necessitates a new overview of a prehistoric irrigation system of this region. It was assumed that 4,000 years ago the population of Balochistan was sparsely distributed and the catchments covered with lush green forests. However, agrarian settlements in different areas during the post and mature Harappan periods exhibited a tremendous anthropogenic pressure on fragile ecosystems that resulted in metamorphic changes in past climate of these regions. The presence of gabar-bands, intended for the control of flooding surface water, and constructing Qanãt, in different parts of Balochistan are clear evidence of climatic changes from subtropical to semiarid desert. In this paper the prehistoric climate of Balochistan will be discussed in the light of gabar-bands and Qanãt. Similarly, the history of these ancient technologies will also be discussed.

There is a vast literature on the study of voice onset time for plosives in the world language. But no such literature is available on Balochi. Besides, most of the available research on VOT focuses on voiceless stops. The current study focuses on VOT of voiced stops of Balochi and English in comparative perspective. Two groups of Balochi speakers were recorded for this study. The first group comprised of ten Balochi speakers from Turbat and who produced words of Baloch starting with voiced stops. Twelve adult Baloch learners of English living in London were asked to produce words of English starting with voiced stops of English. An acoustic analysis of the recordings confirm that Balochi is a voicing language. Place of articulation and adjacent vowel have strong influence on VOT of voiced stops. The current study also reaffirms the previous findings that speakers of a voicing language find it very hard to produce voiced stops of an aspiration language accurately. The participants of the current study were found to transfer L1 VOT values in production of voiced of English.

This study analyzes MA level dissertations of students of linguistics in a university in Karachi, completed in the first decade of the current century. The aim of the study is to determine research trends in linguistics in Sindh. The findings show that the students select topics for research from sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and applied linguistics. They neglect such branches of linguistics like computational linguistics, historical linguistics, semantics, phonetics and phonology. Pakistani student researchers enrolled for postgraduate linguistics programmes are mainly inclined to the study of ELT. Qualitative research is their most favourite type of research. On the other hand, regional languages, institutions existing in rural areas and quantitative research methodology are neglected areas for researchers. Probability sampling techniques are not adopted by them. They rather prefer non-probability sampling techniques. Audio is the most favourite electronic device used in Pakistan. Interview, Analysis and Observation are the most favourite while Field notes and Questionnaire are neglected tools of research among the researchers.

The current paper presents a case of language attrition in Delhi. In 1947, many Saraiki speaking families moved to India from Pakistan. The current study analyzes some of the phonemes of L1 consonant inventory of the Saraiki speakers of Delhi. 118 participants of both male and female gender participated in this study. Half of them were Pakistan-born migrants and the remaining half were Delhi-born progeny of the migrants. In a production task, the participants of were asked to produce a set stimuli carrying the target sounds i.e. [ɳ ɲ ŋ nh lh ɳh] in word medial and final position. The productions were recorded and the recordings were evaluated by four native speakers of northern Saraiki from Pakistan on a Likert scale. The results show that the participants who were born in Saraiki speaking monolingual environment of Pakistan, were slow in convergence than their sons and daughters who were born in a bilingual environment of Delhi. A strong role of function load and dominant language (Hindi) but a minor effect of markedness, gender and attitude was identified in attrition of L1 of the participants.
