Nucleation of silver nanoparticles (NPs) in Tm3+ doped PbO-GeO2 (PGO) glass is reported. The influence of the heat treatment on the nucleation of silver NPs is studied by means of transmission electron microscopy and optical spectroscopy. Two heat treatment procedures were applied in order to compare their performance. Observation of infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion (UC) luminescence of Tm3+ ions is reported and correlated with the heat-treatment procedure. Enhancement of the UC emission for samples heat treated during various time intervals is attributed to the increased local field in the vicinity of the NPs. Quenching of the UC signal was also observed and correlated with the growth of NPs amount and size.

Luminescence properties of Eu3+ doped TeO2-PbO-GeO2 glasses containing gold nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The emission spectra of the samples exhibited enhancement of Eu3+ luminescence due to the presence of gold NPs. The emission at 614 nm, due to the Eu3+ hypersensitive transition 5D0-7F2 , is much influenced by the gold NPs and increases by ≈100% for samples heat-treated at 350 °C during 41 h.

ABSTRACT This work presents, for the first time to our knowledge, experimental results on tellurite rib-type waveguides produced with TeO2-ZnO thin films deposited by RF Sputtering. Thin films were deposited at room temperature using Ar/O-2 plasma at 5 mTorr pressure and RF power of 50 W on substrates of (100) silicon wafers. Geometry and sidewall of the waveguides were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Propagation losses of 0.1 dB/cm for 10 mu m rib width and 1.5 dB/cm for 3-5 mu m ribs widths and 90 nm height were obtained.

ABSTRACT This work presents studies of GeO2-PbO thin films deposited by RF Sputtering for fabrication of rib-waveguide. GeO2-PbO vitreous targets were prepared melting the reagents in alumina crucible. Thin films were deposited at room temperature using pure Ar plasma, at 5 mTorr pressure and RF power of 40 W on substrates of (100) silicon wafers. Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) analyses were employed for the determination of the chemical elements present in the GeO2-PbO film. Geometry and sidewall of the waveguides were investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The mode propagation in the waveguide structure of GeO2-PbO thin films was analyzed using an integrated optic simulation software to obtain a monomode propagation.

ABSTRACT We present the production and characterization of TeO2-WO3-Bi2O3 thin films to be used as core layer in the fabrication of optical sensors based on Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) that has applications as pressure sensors, temperature sensors, chemical and biological sensors. The waveguides were fabricated from pedestal type obtained using conventional optical lithography procedures, followed by plasma etching and Sputtering deposition. Propagation losses around 2.0 dB/cm and 2.5 dB/cm were obtained at 633 and 1050 nm, respectively. Measurements were also performed to characterize the guide modes. Single-mode propagation at 630 and 1050 nm was observed for waveguides width up to 10 μm; larger waveguides width provided multi-mode propagation.

Germanium- and tellurium-based glasses have been largely studied due to their recognized potential for photonics. In this paper, we review our recent studies that include the investigation of the Stokes and anti-Stokes photoluminescence (PL) in different glass systems containing metallic and semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs). In the case of the samples with metallic NPs, the enhanced PL was attributed to the increased local field on the rare-earth ions located in the proximity of the NPs and/or the energy transfer from the metallic NPs to the rare-earth ions. For the glasses containing silicon NPs, the PL enhancement was mainly due to the energy transfer from the NPs to the Er(3+) ions. The nonlinear (NL) optical properties of PbO-GeO2 films containing gold NPs were also investigated. The experiments in the pico- and subpicosecond regimes revealed enhanced values of the NL refractive indices and large NL absorption coefficients in comparison with the films without gold NPs. The reported experiments demonstrate that germanate and tellurite glasses, having appropriate rare-earth ions doping and NPs concentration, are strong candidates for PL-based devices, all-optical switches, and optical limiting.

Vertically-aligned ZnO nanorods with different rod diameters of 50nm, 110nm and 240nm were synthesized by a low-temperature wet-chemical method. Morphologies and structures of ZnO nanorods were examined by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Third-order optical nonlinearities such as nonlinear refraction and absorption were determined by closed- and open-aperture z-scan measurements at 815nm using femtosecond laser pulses. Enhanced optical nonlinearities were observed with increasing rod diameters and aligned degrees of ZnO nanorods along the c-axis. Nonlinear response time, measured by using a time-resolved optical Kerr-gate technique, was less than 95fs.
