Local Field Potential

Congenital auditory deprivation (deafness) leads to a dysfunctional intrinsic cortical microcircuitry. This chapter reviews these deficits with a particular emphasis on layer-specific activity within the primary auditory cortex. Evidence for a delay in activation of supragranular layers and reduction in activity in infragranular layers is discussed. Such deficits indicate the incompetence of the primary auditory cortex to not only properly process thalamic input and generate output within the infragranular layers, but also incorporate top-down modulations from higher order auditory cortex into the processing within primary auditory cortex. Such deficits are the consequence of a misguided postnatal development. Maturation of primary auditory cortex in deaf animals shows evidence of a developmental delay and further alterations in gross synaptic currents, spread of activation, and morphology of local field potentials recorded at the cortical surface. Days and weeks after an ischemic stroke, the peri-infarct area adjacent to the necrotic tissue exhibits very intense synaptic reorganization aimed at regaining lost functions. In order to enhance functional recovery, it is important to understand the mechanisms supporting neural repair and neuroplasticity in the cortex surrounding the lesion. Brain oscillations of the local field potential (LFP) are rhythmic fluctuations of neuronal excitability that synchronize neuronal activity to organize information processing and plasticity. Although the oscillatory activity of the brain has been probed after stroke in both animals and humans using electroencephalography (EEG), the latter is ineffective to precisely map the oscillatory changes in the peri-infarct zone where synaptic plasticity potential is high. Here, we worked on the hypothesis that the brain oscillatory system is altered in the surviving peri-infarct cortex, which may slow down the functional repair and reduce the recovery. In order to document the relevance of this hypothesis, oscillatory power was measured at various distances from the necrotic core at 7 and 21 days after a permanent cortical ischemia induced in mice. Delta and theta oscillations remained at a normal power in the peri-infarct cortex, in contrast to low gamma oscillations that displayed a gradual decrease, when approaching the border of the lesion. A broadband increase of power was also observed in the homotopic contralateral sites. Thus, the proximal peri-infarct cortex could become a target of therapeutic interventions applied to correct the oscillatory regimen in order to boost post-stroke functional recovery.

The new global gravity models represented by global spherical harmonics like EGM2008 require a high degree and order in their coefficients to resolve the gravity field in local areas; therefore, there are interests to represent the regional or local field by less parameters and to develop a parameter transformation from the global model to a local kind of spherical harmonic model. The authors use local spherical cap harmonics for the regional gravity potential representation related to a local pole and a local spherical coordinate system. This allows to model regional gravity potential with less parameters and less memory requirements in computation and storage. From different kinds of representations of spherical cap harmonics, we have selected the so-called adjusted spherical cap harmonics (ASCH). This is the most appropriate for the presented mathematical model of deriving its coefficients from global gravity models. In that way, the global gravity models can fully be exploited and mapped to regional ASCH, in particular with respect to the computation of regional geoid models with improved solution.

This paper concerns character sheaves of connected reductive algebraic groups defined over non-Archimedean local fields and their relation with characters of smooth representations. Although character sheaves were devised with characters of representations of finite groups of Lie type in mind, character sheaves are perfectly well defined for reductive algebraic groups over any algebraically closed field. Nevertheless, the relation between character sheaves of an algebraic group $G$ over an algebraic closure of a field $K$ and characters of representations of $G(K)$ is well understood only when $K$ is a finite field and when $K$ is the field of complex numbers. In this paper we consider the case when $K$ is a non-Archimedean local field and explain how to match certain character sheaves of a connected reductive algebraic group $G$ with virtual representations of $G(K)$. In the final section of the paper we produce examples of character sheaves of general linear groups and matching admissible virtual representations.

In this paper we investigate the influence of the local field correction (LFC) on the optical behavior of a closed V-type system. We consider a V configuration such that quantum interference between the two decay channels to the ground atomic level is important. When the two optical transitions are coupled by one laser field we find that LFC does not destroy the non-absorption resonance that usually appears due to quantum interference. On the other hand, the absorption profile is deformed due to the presence of LFC. We have also studied the case of a driving laser field coupling one of the optical transitions, and a probe laser field coupling the other one. In this field configuration the local field modifies substantially the optical response. We have found that the system can switch between absorption and gain by controlling the near dipole-dipole parameter. On the other hand, the relative phase between the pump and probe fields allow us to change the system from absorption to gain.

We have fabricated and characterized micro-SQUID susceptometers for use in low-temperature scanning probe microscopy systems. The design features the following: a 4.6μm diameter pickup loop; an integrated field coil to apply a local field to the sample; an additional counterwound pickup-loop/field-coil pair to cancel the background signal from the applied field in the absence of the sample; modulation coils to allow setting the SQUID at its optimum bias point (independent of the applied field), and shielding and symmetry that minimizes coupling of magnetic fields into the leads and body of the SQUID. We use a SQUID series array preamplifier to obtain a system bandwidth of 1MHz. The flux noise at 125mK is approximately 0.25μΦ0/√Hz above 10kHz, with a value of 2.5μΦ0/√Hz at 10Hz. The nominal sensitivity to electron spins located at the center of the pickup loop is approximately 200μB/√Hz above 10kHz, in the white-noise frequency region.
