Theorthodox tradition in studies and explanations of lab our migration has been to adopt the perspective of those who move. Such a framework of analysis has then addressed itself to (i) the reasons why individuals and groups decide to migrate, and (ii) the consequences. As regards the first issue, it has generally been accepted that the phenomenon of migration is in response to economic forces that push and/or pull people out of their own communities into others – the ‘invisible hand of the market’. As for the second issue, emphasis is placed on the problematics of adjustment or assimilation into the host community, and also on the new values, as well as the other stimulants – good or bad – that the returning migrants bring home.

The World Health Organisation initiated this study in 1983, with the principal aim of providing a base of data on the situation of the aging population in developing countries, as well as providing an opportunity to compare and contrast the situation between countries in the same region. The four countries included in the study - Fiji, Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines - completed survey fieldwork in 1984, after surveying samples of their population aged 60 years and over. The survey instrument was divided into eight sections. Demographic information included age, sex, marital status, living arrangements, race, religion, schooling and numbers of living children and siblings. A section on Economic Resources covered work status, occupation, retirement, occupation and status of spouse, sources of income, and household expenses. The Physical Health section asked about self assessed health and ratings with peers, accidents, diseases, limitations due to health, both traditional and mode...

Until recently, drinking in public venues has been a relatively neglected area of alcohol research despite the epidemiological significance of problems arising from drinking in licensed establishments and other public venues. In the WHO Project on Public Drinking, expert informants in 12 countries provided detailed information on alcohol consumption, drinking in public settings, the nature and magnitude of problems associated with public drinking, the regulation of public drinking, enforcement and prevention. The most commonly indicated problems associated with drinking in public venues were underage drinking, impaired driving, and alcohol-related violence. Many of the informants in the survey expressed concern that the enforcement of alcohol licensing laws receives very low priority on the political agenda. In general, few countries have developed prevention programs aimed specifically at preventing problems arising from drinking in public venues. Nonetheless the informants identif...
