Introduction A common focus of the information behaviour literature is on how the target populations seek and use information to meet their need. Information seeking behaviour deals with the psychological behaviour of the seeker, which involves the searching, locating, retrieving and using of information (Karunarathna, 2008). Everyone needs information to survive and strive in this 21st century, just as doctors need information to treat patients, lawyers to handle cases, teachers need information to prepare lesson notes, teach their students and prepare them for a career ahead of them, the elderly also requires much information to stay healthy, make informed choices and to remain current with news and happenings around them. The information needs of the elderly population, particularly in rural areas, have scarcely been investigated by researchers and are very poorly covered in the literatures of information science (Zou & Zhou, 2014). According to WHO (2015) most developed countrie...

The main concern of cloud computing is sending, receiving, storing and dissemination of data via distributed network on a larger environment. Cloud computing activities and operations are in distant data centres and servers outside the control of the user. These servers can only be reached through the Internet. Allowing a thirdparty service to take control of data raises serious security concern. Thus, formulating cloud computing security policy becomes imperative. This is the crux of the paper. This paper discusses what cloud security is all about; it highlights the huge opportunities presented by cloud computing for libraries to redesign their services to harness the benefits therein. It touches on the need to develop adequate security policy. It proposes a security framework to mitigate data breaches and malicious attacks associated with cloud computing.

This study focuses on the use of e-mail in providing library and information services in higher institution libraries in Delta State – Nigeria. A survey design was employed. The nine academic libraries in Delta State constituted the population for the study. A total of 106 respondents duly completed the questionnaire. Simple percentages and frequency counts were used to analyze data. This study revealed that e-mail is occasionally used in providing library and information services in higher institutions. The study further revealed the unavailability of Internet facilities in six out of the nine institutions surveyed, with a corresponding lack of Internet literacy amongst respondents. In view of the enormous benefits in using e-mail in providing library and information services in higher institutions, it therefore concluded that Internet facilities should be installed in all higher institution libraries in Delta State. It has become unimaginable for libraries and librarians to alienate themselves from other organizations and “do their own thing” without joint efforts for effective information service delivery in the communities. The importance of collaboration and partnership has removed the notion of “stiff necked professionals” to create spaces for reshaping and reinvigorating roles of the libraries beyond their physical space and immediate users. It is to enable libraries become more interactive, augmenting realities with new layers of information and content in emerging information societies. Thus, aligning with the community based organizations not only gives visibility to library and information centers but opens avenues on knowledge management, civic engagements, governance and budget documents, holistic empowerment and sustainable development activities. The rich cultural and human resources in the communities add value for total quality services which libraries aim to achieve. The questio...

The demands of modern information handling coupled with the advent of information and communication technology (ICT), which brings various competitors in information service delivery, demands an innovative approach from university libraries in reaching out to users, of which marketing is beneficial. This paper examines the strategies used by university libraries in Africa to market their resources and services to users and the problems experienced. The survey research design was adopted for this study. A questionnaire was designed and used for data collection. The purposive sampling technique was employed to select twenty (20) universities in Africa for the study. Findings revealed that university libraries in Africa, like their counterparts in other continents, creatively engage in marketing library and information services through various strategies. It was also found that the most frequently used strategies for marketing library and information services in African libraries are library publications (memos, bulletins, and newsletters), orientation exercises, website and flyers. The study equally revealed low level use of social media such as Facebook, blogs, Twitter, e-mail alerts for marketing. Absence of marketing plan, not knowing what to market, lack of facilities and lack of fund were mentioned by the respondents as some of the barriers in marketing library and information services. It was therefore recommended amongst others, that university libraries should design a workable marketing plan with total emphasis on the users; this will help in determining users' needs for effective and efficient library and information services delivery.
