In Ana Teresa Pereira we find a very peculiar literary universe, which has a special and unique place on the contemporary Portuguese literature. It is made up of images, repeated endlessly, that strike us as terrifyingly beautiful. If we look deep within this literary spectrum and carefully analyse every image in the author’s texts, we will realise that the very process of decoding and interpreting the symbols is very much like digging deep through century-old ruins of an abandoned house, where every remain found repeats itself and can easily be mistaken for another piece of ruin only a few steps ahead. All of this is Ana Teresa Pereira’s house, filled with words that create the Fantastic, the mysterious and where ruin is given a specific meaning: the meaning of fear, built in an atmosphere of delightful claustrophobia that makes us want to dig deeper through the debris, like an amazingly self-centred labyrinth. The following text will try to analyse Ana Teresa Pereira’s work under the scope of ruin, a subject-matter that gives us the very colour of her writings, especially in her earlier short-stories.

“Our European film culture (...) is specific, full of local colours and tastes, of accents and languages. It celebrates diversity, even more so: It keeps cultural diversity alive!” (Wim Wenders, 2010). This paper looks at the way cultural diversity is portrayed in the movie L’auberge espagnole, Cédric Klapisch’s 2002 movie about student experience in the ERASMUS exchange Program, we pose the question of how contemporary European cinema relates to intercultural identity and diversity in Europe.

In the present article we will deal with the subject of contemporary boredom and its presence in Gonçalo M. Tavares’ Uma Viagem à Índia, published at the end of 2010 and already considered one of the most prolific and important books in the beginning of the 21st century. Bloom, the main character of this unique travel to India, is someone who reveals an attitude of distrust and distance towards the world that surrounds him, bearing the weight of a profound feeling of boredom and a kind of tiredness which reflect the characteristic post-modern apathy, resignation and detachment. Thus, by analysing Bloom’s  unique individual epic journey and by confronting his path with the contemporary man’s fractured indentity, we will try indentify marks of boredom in the 21st century and provide a insight into its unique features.

Nesta comunicação iremos tratar alguns aspetos da premiada obra de Gonçalo M. Tavares Uma Viagem à Índia (2010), considerada por muitos inovadora, desafiante e mesmo polémica. Após a sua publicação surgiu de imediato um debate sobre o género do texto e sobre a sua interrelação com Os Lusíadas, a epopeia camoniana esteio fundacional da cultura portuguesa. Os primeiros comentários foram no sentido de considerar que se tratava de uma recuperação pós-moderna, no século XXI, do modelo da epopeia camoniana. No entanto, à medida que avançamos na leitura e análise da epopeia/romance rapidamente nos apercebemos de que existe mais do que uma mera reinvenção da viagem narrada por Camões e que Bloom, o protagonista, traça um percurso inédito, de entre muitos outros possíveis, realizados ou por realizar, num tempo e num espaço de múltiplos sentidos na procura de “perceber qual o chão do nosso século” (Tavares, 2010a: 9).

In this paper, we will be looking at the issue of boredom in the contemporary world and its presence in Uma Viagem à Índia (A Voyage to India), by Portuguese writer Gonçalo M. Tavares, through an analysis of the protagonist’s journey from Lisbon to India, wherein he looks to learn and forget in the same movement (that is to say, always moving forward and not allowing himself time to ever look back).

In the present dissertation, we will be looking at the profile and identitary path of Bloom, the (non) hero of Uma Viagem à Índia, a twenty-first century counterepic text, written and published in 2010 by the portuguese author Gonçalo M. Tavares. This absolutely unique literary adventure establishes a peculiar connection between classica epic tradition, the heritage and spirit of the modern age and the vision of postmodernity. The aim of Tavares’s text is to draw the attention to the question of the lack of epic and heroic tradition in the twenty-first century, by questioning the very nature of the epic in contemporary age. This paper thus intends to analyse the transfiguration fo the epic in postmodernity in the context of Uma Viagem à Índia by drawing on a comparative analysis in which we will look at the parodic, parodical and subversive characteristics of some of the works that directly or indirectly establish a connection with Tavares’s work. From this analysis of the parodic appropriation of the epic in postmodernity, we will be lookng at man’s relationship with contemporary reality in light of the idea of the fall of metanarratives, privileging the analysys of the concepts of fall, chaos and emptiness, as well as the notions of individualism in postmodernity in the study of the character Bloom as the figure of the tourist, vagabond, fugitive and chased.

A literatura de Gonçalo M. Tavares debruça-se sobre questões essenciais da vivência humana num mundo dominado pela constante mudança, pela incerteza, pela ambiguidade e pelo paradoxo. Dada a complexidade do mundo que habitamos, o autor, por diversas vezes, faz referência a um sentido de responsabilidade literária e moral que o escritor de século XXI deve demonstrar, o dever de estar atento ao mundo que o rodeia e de o levar a sério, questionando, refletindo e pro-vocando nos leitores inquietação perante temas tão fundamentais como o destino do ser humano no mundo tecnológico e globalizado do século XXI, a sua relação com a tecnologia, a ciência e as implicações na relação que mantém com o mundo natural. Deste modo, procuramos com o presente artigo encetar uma breve reflexão sobre as características mais marcantes da poética autoral de Gonçalo M. Tavares à luz do conceito do pós-humano, através da leitura das suas mais marcantes produções literárias. As obras pertencentes à tetralogia O reino e títulos como Uma Viagem à Índia, Atlas do Corpo e da Imaginação e Breves Notas sobre Ciência, farão parte desta nossa leitura pós-humana do universo literário de Gonçalo M. Tavares tackles essential issues pertaining to human contemporary life in a world dominated by constant change, by uncertainty, ambiguity, and paradox. The author himself often puts forward the idea of literary and moral responsibility of the writer at the beginning of the 21st century, the urgency of being aware of the complexity of the world and taking it seriously, questioning and provoking disquiet, restlessness, and discomfort in the reader in the face of such fundamental issues as the fate of the human being in a technological and globalised world, its relationship with technology and science , as well as the human impact on the natural world. This article thus aims at providing a brief analysis of some of the most salient characteristics of Gonçalo M. Tavares's poetics in light of the concept of the posthuman, through a close reading of his most prominent works. The books belonging to the tetralogy O Reino and titles such as Uma Viagem à Índia, Atlas do Corpo e da Imaginação, and Breves Notas sobre Ciência will be included in our posthuman reading of Tavares's literary universe.

No artigo que apresentamos iremos abordar a questão do tédio na contemporaneidade e a sua presença na obra Uma Viagem à Índia, de Gonçalo M. Tavares, publicada no final de 2010 e considerada uma das mais marcantes obras literárias do início do século XXI. Bloom, o protagonista desta viagem singular, é alguém que revela desde logo uma atitude de desconfiança e distância perante o mundo que o rodeia, carregando consigo sempre um profundo sentimento de tédio, um cansaço que reflete uma apatia e resignação características do que alguns apelidam de "condição pós-moderna". Deste modo, será a partir da análise do percurso de Bloom e o confronto com o perfil identitário fragmentado do homem contemporâneo, que procuraremos identificar as marcas do tédio que domina o mundo atual e, ao mesmo tempo, saber o que o torna cada vez mais definitivo e entorpecedor.
