The article deals with tree horn ferrules with dragon images 12th – 13th centuries from Novgorod the Great and Smolensk. Armors and belts with dragon images became a part of the power institute of the Mongol Empire. The Old Russian works of art created under the influence of the Golden Horde are considered frequently as an imitation of more elaborated and process complicated prototypes. A careful study of the iconographic and stylistic features of the three ferrules from Novgorod and Smolensk suggests that the Novgorod find has a direct connection with the Golden Horde tradition, dating back to the art of the Yuan dynasty. The Smolensk finds are an attempt to follow a well-known pattern within the framework of the development of ancient Russian art during the Mongol conquest.

The aim of this research is to study the development of Scandinavian art outside of Scandinavia. The main attention is focused on the process of influence of the Borre style elementon the applied art development in North-West Russia of the 10th–12th centuries. The main sources of artistical influence should be not Scandinavia, but the territory of distribution of Scandinavian art, in particular, Pomerania and the British Isles. The stylistic analysis revelates the use of identical elements of decor, where the main place have the highly simplified Borre style motifs (chains and scale motifs), supplemented by a double contour and hatching. It is possible to trace the process of Borre’s assimilation using carved wooden artefacts from Novgorod the Great. Development of this art in the 10th century was influenced by the art of Viking Age. The preservation of these stylistic features can be traced in Novgorod art up to and including the 12th century. One of the actual problems of this phe...

The impact of the Romanesque artistic tradition on the evolution of the sculptural décor of Ancient Russian churches is among the contemporary research issues relating to Ancient Russian monumental carving. Traditionally, the early stages of this process have been analysed using the evidence from twelfth-century churches. The suggestion that the interaction between Ancient Russian and Romanesque monumental art may date back to an earlier historical period than previously believed appears plausible if one considers the surviving examples of Ancient Russian architectural wood carving, represented by two eleventh-century fragments of carved columns from Veliky Novgorod. The monuments are placed in the overarching context of the formation of early Romanesque sculpture, including Polish and Croatian, which remained under a strong impact of eighth – eleventh-century Italian monumental sculpture.

The Rejection of Zoomorphic Elements as One of the Important Characteristics of the Borre Style
Development in the Applied Art of Old Russia (by wooden finds from Novgorod the Great)
The article deals with the development of Borre style outside of Scandinavian countries. The Borre ring-chain and
gripping beasts were the most widespread elements of Scandinavian territories, whilst ribbon plates and scale ornament
were popular outside of it. This process is more characteristic for the Baltic area and on the British Isles. Another region of
this art dissemination was the territory of northwest Rus’. The article focuses on the analysis of carved wooden objects from
the archaeological collection from Novgorod the Great. This makes it possible to present the development of Borre style in
the art of the Ancient Rus’. The result is an analysis and attribution of decoration, which allows to attribute some motives to
the category of images created under the influence of the Viking Age art and to trace the development and preservation of
artistic traditions from the 10 th to 13 th centuries.

The article is devoted to the study of the mechanism of interaction between the art of the Late Viking Age and the Romanesque style in the Scandinavian countries. The continuous process of transformation of artistic forms in the period from 11th to 13th centuries can be traced by referring to the study of one of the best preserved group of monuments in the region — Norwegian carved wooden portals. The article is focused on the analysis of the formation of the compositional schemes and decoration of portals. An important aspect of this process is the study of the origin and development of composition schemes and the main decorative elements of wooden carving portals. Many of these elements were the result of the influence of European medieval centers of Romanesque art on the artistic life of the Scandinavian countries. Active distribution of Romanesque took place against the background of gradually falling tradition of Scandinavian art of the Late Viking age. The result of this interaction is the emergence of new artistic images that combine the stylistic features of the two periods. This process affected not only the works of Norwegian wooden churches portals, but also reflected in the decoration of many monuments of stone, wooden and decorative art of Scandinavia.

This article presents a study of a group of wooden objects of pre-Mongolian Novgorod applied art in the context of the influence of Viking Age art. The main focus is on the development of Novgorod applied art as a lateral branch of Viking Age art. The result of this process was the appearance of so-called “hybrid objects” created under the influence of Scandinavian animal styles, but in isolation from the original artistic tradition. The study is based on the analysis of stylistic features of a group of wooden objects from an archaeological collection of Ancient Novgorod. This group includes objects of everyday life, such as utensils, furniture fragments, decorative details, etc. Complex stylistic analysis is the main method of the study. Through it, it is possible to clearly identify the main stylistic features, as well as to determine the range of artistic objects which were created under the influence of Scandinavian art.

Works of art that belong to the so called ‘Transitional style’ display a combination
of Scandinavian Viking ornaments and European Romanesque stylistic elements.
Many of these transitional monuments (the end of 11th – the first half of 12th century)
give us an opportunity to trace the development of art from the Viking epoch
to the Romanesque. Transition style is a result of the migration of Romanesque
images and stylistic elements into the art of Scandinavian countries. This process
was conditioned by the christianization of Scandinavia during the 11th–12th centuries.
In this article we suggest to look afresh at a few examples of Norwegian wooden
carving portals of medieval stave churches and other examples of monumental
wooden and stone decorated carvings such as capitals, fonts, liturgical furnishing
and metal works from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The iconographic method
