The energy potential from agricultural and forestry biomass resources was calculated some 15 years ago and the energy potential from these residues was also evaluated with a trend to be increased in the future. Biomass resources and potentials assessment for Albania has been studied and evaluated within the frame of National Programs of Research and Development supported from the Albanian Ministry of Education and Science and the Agency of Research, Technology and Innovation, for the period 2010-2012. To address issues related to the assessment of future biomass production we reviewed biomass resources in Albania and studies on potentials assessment. We hope our team will benefit from the comparison of biomass supply from forestry residues, wood industry residues, agriculture residues (straw, permanent crops-field residues) and animal residues. Our aim was to screen, review and gather knowledge of ligno-cellulose biomass in Albania. The biomass potentials were estimated on the basis...

Abstract: This study seeks to identify the key trends and important knowledge towards biomass and biofuels sustainability using a global assessment. The biomass is considered as the fourth largest energy source in the world after coal, oil and natural gas. It is very important to select the most promising option for using biomass under environmental, economic and resource perspective. While the electricity and heat can be provided by variety of renewable resources such as wind, sun, water, biomass and so one, the biomass showed to be the only alternative for production of transportation fuels. But, biomass potential for energy production is promising nowadays. It became the most important renewable energy resources with about 10% of the annual global primary energy demand. The biomass energy has potential to be “modernized” worldwide, due to the easiest way of conversion into the most convenient forms such as gases, liquids, or electricity. This paper reviews the latest literature o...

Zvecan is a mining industrial region in the north of Kosovo. In addition, other industrial sectors have developed. Unfortunately the region is very much polluted. The source is industrial activity (exploitation of mineral resources and ferrous metallurgy, and other chemical industry). The present paper aims to investigate pollution level in Zvecan and raise public awareness. In the end recommendations with regard to pollution monitoring process and other measures are made. Some water samples have been collected from 2014 to 2015 and analyzed. The results reported contaminated water. As it can be seen, the main purpose of this study was to identify physical and chemical characteristics of drinking water in some villages in the municipality of Zvecan. On the other hand, local authority need to take urgent measures to improve situation and to offer for the exposed population living in the vicinity of the pollution source, other source of drinking water for personal and community usage.

This paper is studying modeling of carbon dioxide capture in the air with the aqueous ammonia solution. Capture of CO 2 has been carried out in a pilot plant. The experiments were carried out at 25 0 C temperature and atmospheric pressure with 5% concentration of ammonia solution. The goal is to establish the main parameters of mass-transfer in a chemical absorption in the packing column. Hydrodynamics measurements were carried out in a pilot plant, first blank column and later in packed column with grid structured packing. The parameters of the grid structured packing that were determined are: porosity, equivalent diameter, shape factor and the most important specific surface of filling. The loading point, the point at which the liquid holdup started to increase, was determined. The gas velocity was taken lower than the flooding velocity. For each test performed was measured flow of liquid, its density, gas flow, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the entry and exit and baromet...

In this set of experiments we measure a soluble gas, ethanol in a non-invasive technique using a continuous system. The analogy of this system with our lungs is the main motivation behind the experiments conducted. In our first set up we use three continuous isolated vessels, with equal amount of solution water-ethanol, with ethanol concentration 0.476 mg/l. The connectors used between vessels, for each set of experiments, are of specific diameter as it influences the pressure drop in our system. Air passes through each vessels solution with a fine-gas sparger and carries with it a certain amount of ethanol vapor which, when it evaporates, lives in the upper part of the solution. This process is repeated in the second vessel where the air from the first reactor is passed to the second vessel and again absorbs an amount of ethanol vapor and passed to the third vessel where, unlike the first two, we try to achieve equilibrium between the concentration alcohol content and concentration...

Grape vine is the most commonly grown kind of fruit worldwide. Albania belongs chronologically to the old world of wine producing countries. Many factors such as: variety, soil, climate, growing conditions and winemaking techniques influence the fruit composition and therefore, the style of wine that can be produced. Wine is an alcoholic beverage produced through the partial or total fermentation of grapes. Wine is characterized by color: white, rose and red. Albania can be separated into four wine regions, which are mainly defined by their altitude. Varieties from the Vitis vinifera group are most widely used for winemaking. Wine can be classified by human experts or by physicochemical laboratory experiments. Physicochemical and sensory analyses of wine are important in establishing their quality and authenticity. The aim of the study was to investigate physico-chemical and sensory properties between red wines from black grapes (Vitisvinifera L.) produced in different regions of Al...

The characterization of the crude oils is depended on the evaluation of chemical and physical properties of pure oil by-products. Characteristics of crude oil are very important in the designing and operation of the almost every equipment in the refining petroleum industry. A petroleum fluid is defined by its thermodynamic and volumetric properties as well as by its physicochemical properties. Their behavior is modeled from experimental data in order to properly simulate the processing of these fluids during their industrial production. To achieve optimal crude selection and processing decisions is very important to have information refer to crude oil quality. This includes: the characteristics of crude oil fractions, density, the octane number, sulfur content, viscosity, etc . The aim of this study was quality evaluation of some specific crude oils extracted in Albania, by the classification range of obtained fractions during the crude oil distillation. It was indicated from our ex...

Biological systems are very complex regarding their kinetic behavior. There are many models that intend to predict fermentation performance, although Monod equation remains the best model. A detailed investigation of batch fermentation process at room temperature for two different types of yeast Saccharomyces carlsbegensis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae was carried out. Batch fermentation experiments were carried in 1 liter bioreactors, in the same medium, time and fermentation conditions. Kinetic constants were used to compare fermentation performance under similar conditions. Kinetic parameters investigation was done based on growth kinetics, ethanol productivity and substrate consumption (glucose) using computer simulation for different kinetic models. There are some notable differences based on kinetic models. Although two types of yeast strain leave the same remain extract in the end of fermentation, fermentation dynamics differ from each other. Saccharomyces carlsbengensis has h...

This work was based on the pretreatment of lingo-cellulosic wastes from agro – forestry organic wastes with samples being taken from stations of different sources. Between many of recommended and explained methods for pretreatment of the organic biomass we selected as the most effective, the way of acidic waste pretreatment and another scenario applying the alkaline method prior to the biodegradation through anaerobic bio-digestion for energy profit. For bio-methane profit process has been performed in a series of the experiments. From the various experiments we realized the great importance of the pre-treatment process for the biogas production. Alkaline pretreatment (with NaOH) brought about a decay of lignin structure of biomass and increase access of enzymes in hemicellulose and cellulose. This method was more effective than acidic treatment due to the fact that was achieved more dissolved lignocellulose, which is indicated by the highest decrease of organic material in the trea...

Crude oil is a very complex mixture of organic compounds including aliphatic, aromatic and heterocyclic compounds. In order to predict the phase behavior of crude oil mixtures accurately, some description of the oil composition is required. One common laboratory procedure for describing an crude oil is the use of Gas Chromatography to estimate the carbon number distribution of an crude oil. Characterization of crude oils mainly involves characterization of hydrocarbon plus fractions generally expressed in terms of C 7 + fractions. Crude oil is produced by separating light gases from a reservoir fluid and bringing its condition to surface atmospheric pressure and temperature. Therefore, crude oils are generally free from methane and contain little ethane. In this study are determined the constituent components of two important oilfield crude oil in Albania, Kucova and Ballshi. Determination of the components is done with Varian 450 Gas Chromatography. The study conclude that the oil ...

Water distillation is commonly used for obtaining essential oils from aromatic herbs. In the present work Clevenger apparatus is applied to obtain essential oil from Syzygium aromaticum L. Clevenger extraction represents an environmentally method for oil herb extraction as it employs water as solvent during the distillation process. Essential oils are highly valued. They are traditionally used in medicines and health remedies. The purpose of the present work is to obtain essential oil from clove plant and subsequently indentify the chemical composition by means of spectroscopic techniques. Essential oil samples were analyzed by spectroscopic techniques FTIR spectroscopy and UV-Vis. spectrophotometer. Both techniques indicated presence of eugenol as main chemical component in the oil of clove in excellent agreement with reported literature data.

Among the tested used biofuels, the bioethanol represent an attractive alternative to the conventional fossil fuel, its production by converting various substrates by free or immobilized cells of yeasts S. cerevisiae being intensively studied. In the experiment, immobilized cells in alginate have been used with the method of entrapment. The process evolution has been analyzed by means of the variation of glucose and ethanol concentration during the fermentation. The rate of the biochemical reactions in heterogeneous systems is lower than homogeneous systems, as the result of decreasing of the substrate concentration inside of the biocatalyst particles. For the heterogeneous systems, not only the value of the biochemical reaction rate is affected, but also the kinetic model is modified compared to the ideal models describing the substrate consumption or product formation. For these reasons, the kinetic parameters of the biochemical reactions with immobilized cells differ from those o...
