Packed Bed

We describe here a new experimental device developed for the study of a combustion front propagation in a reactive medium: crushed oil shale (500 to 1000 µm). We are interested in the propagation of a front supplied by air in co-current. The cell is a vertical cylinder of 90mm internal diameter and 300mm height, made up of an insulating material. To start the combustion and to obtain a plane flame front, it was set up a sophisticated device of ignition, namely the cone calorimeter. The reactor is finely instrumented. A whole of thermocouples makes it possible to measure the temperature along the axis for the cell and over a horizontal cross section (at middle height) of the packed bed. Palm stearin (POs) and palm kernel olein (PKOo) blends were modified by enzymatic interesterification (IE) to achieve the physical properties of margarine fats. POs and PKOo are both products of the palm oil industry that presently have limited use. Rhizomucor miehei lipase (Lipozyme IM 60) was used to catalyze the interesterification of oil blends at 60°C. The progress of interesterification was monitored by following changes in triacylglyceride composition. At 60°C interesterification can be completed in 5 h. Degrees of hydrolysis obtained through IE for all blends were decreased from 2.9 to 2.0 by use of dry molecular sieves. The solid fat contents of POs/PKOo 30:70 and 70:30 interesterified blends were 9.6 and 18.1 at 20°C, and 0 and 4.1 at 35°C, respectively. The slip melting point (SMP) of POs/PKOo 30:70 was 40.0°C before interesterification and 29.9°C after IE. For POs/PKOs 70:30, SMP was 47.7 before and 37.5°C after IE. These thermal characteristics of interesterified POs/PKOo blend ratios from 30:70 to 70:30 were comparable to those of commercial margarines. Results showed that IE was effective in producing solid fats with less than 0.5% trans.

Resistojets operating at low power (less than lOO W) and using liquid propellants have re-emerged as attractive propulsion options for orbit-raising small satellites deployed at Space Shuttle altitudes (approx. 2OO km). Compared to low power pulsed plasma thrusters (PPT), the resistojet produces two orders of magnitude more thrust (approximately 1.4 mN compared to 140 mN) which is required to overcome drag at solar maximum. The wet mass of both systems is approximately equal although the propellant volume for the PPT is significantly lower since it is stored in solid form. The major disadvantage of the resistojet propulsion system compared to the PPT, is in the complexity added from the propellant tanks. Shuttle integration concerns for the solid Teflon (trademark) propellant of the PPT are minimal or non-existent. Although non-toxic, the water or nitrous oxide propellant of the resistojet requires pressurized tanks and valves which increase safety requirements. To investigate the usefulness of the resistojet for small satellite applications, a series of performance tests have been completed at the AFRL Electric Propulsion Laboratory using the JPL inverted pendulum thrust stand. The tests were conducted for two types of resistojet thrusters developed at the University of Surrey which utilize a packed bed of SiC particles for the heat exchanger. Performance testing eas accomplished at power levels from 0-600 W for five propellants: water, nitrous oxide, water/ methanol, nitrogen, and helium. Two endurance tests were conducted to determine possible failure modes. Performance characterization and thermal models were developed for future design applications of these thrusters. Future USAF and Surrey Satellite Technology, Ltd. (SSTL) missions using these resistojets are also discussed.
