Drop splash as a result of an impact onto a dry substrate is governed by the impact parameters, gas properties and the substrate properties. The splash thresholds determine the boundaries between various splash modes. Various existing models for the splash threshold are reviewed in this paper. It is shown that our understanding of splash is not yet complete. The most popular, widely used models for splash threshold do not describe well the available experimental data. The scientific part of this paper is focused on the description of drop prompt splash on rough and porous substrates. It is found that the absolute length scales of the substrate roughness, like Ra or Rz, do not have any significant effect on the splash threshold. The drop impact onto porous surfaces has important applications in many fields, such as painting, paper coating,drug delivery and cosmetic sprays. In most of these applications, the optimisation of the deposition process is carried out empirically, without a proper understanding of the physics and a theoretical modelling of the spreading and the imbibition phenomena. The purpose of this study is to analyse droplet impacts on metallic meshes to define a general modelling strategy of the impact regimen on particular 2D regular porous surfaces. The application of this structure is relevant in process like filtration but also in the medical field, considering for example reconstructive surgery. Jammed Interface Final Shape a b s t r a c t We present findings from an experimental study of the impact of liquid droplets onto powder surfaces, where the particulates are hydrophobic. We vary both the size of the drop and impact speed coupled with the size range of the powder in order to assess the critical conditions for the formation of liquid marbles, where the drop becomes completely encapsulated by the powder, and arrested shapes where the drop cannot regain its spherical shape. By using different hydrophobization agents we find that a lower particle mobility may aid in promoting liquid marble formation at lower impact kinetic energies. From observations of the arrested shape formations , we propose that simple surface tensions may be inadequate to describe deformation dynamics in liquid marbles.
