Selfies at Auschwitz have become increasingly popular, and have generated agitated public debate. While some see them as an engaged form of witnessing, others denounce them as a narcissistic desecration of the dead. We analyze the taking, composition, and circulation of several of the most popular selfies of Auschwitz and the online reactions to them. The practice of selfies marks a shift from witness to witnessee and from onsite to online presence. Yet it also builds on previous practices: photography, postcards and souvenirs, the affordances of the architecture of the memorial site, the bodily presence of the survivor-witness as mediator of the Holocaust, and the redemptive value assigned to the physical presence of the visitor as "witness of the witness." We suggest that the combination of continuities with the past alongside the radical break with previous witnessing practices empowers selfie-takers, while arousing the indignation of gatekeepers of Holocaust memory.

The village of Miska is one of the 530 Palestinian localities destroyed during the Palestinian Nakba (Arabic for great calamity, catastrophe, or devastation).
Although the ruins of these places are part of the Israeli landscape, and most Israeli Jews have some knowledge about the Nakba, they do not understand its meaning. In this paper, I deploy Hannah Arendt’s distinction between knowing and understanding to answer the question of how the Nakba can at once be known but not understood by Israeli Jews. Drawing on the tours conducted by the activist organization Zochrot (Hebrew for ‘we remember’) to the ruins of Miska, I argue that the embodied and symbolic practices conducted during the tours to Miska can work to challenge the gap between knowing and understanding by creating a different perspective on the Nakba. From this perspective, the Nakba is not only understood as the memory of the ‘other’—that is, the Palestinian memory of the place—but is understood as a complex memory that embodies a dialectical relationship between Jewish and Palestinian remembrances: a potentially common memory of the place and the basis for the imagining of a common future.

Rather than technical and mathematical devices, this chapter argues that underlying recommendation engines are ontological assumptions about culture, and more specifically about aesthetic judgment. We lay bare two of these assumptions by analyzing public discussion about Amazon’s and Netflix’s recommendation engines: that aesthetic judgment is objective, that is, that judgments can be obtained by analyzing observable online behavior without tapping subjective contemplation; and that it is individualistic, that is, that one’s relationship with culture is dyadic, and geared toward satisfying personal needs, without reference to inter-subjective deliberation. We historicize and relativize this particular model of aesthetic judgment by comparing it to the modernist model, formulated by Arendt after Kant. For Arendt, aesthetic judgments are neither objective nor individualistic; instead, they involve subjectivity and inter-subjectivity, since aesthetic judgment lies not in the realm of truth, and since it entails communal, communicative process. By unpacking the assumptions behind the algorithmization of aesthetic judgment, we further the conversation on the politics of digital platforms.

Through a close textual and visual rhetorical analysis of the videotape left behind after a suicide attack in Jerusalem in 2002, this paper seeks to listen to the voice of the shaida- the female Palestinian suicide bomber- emerging from the videotape, and understand her act in a mythological context that links and juxtaposes her act with the act of Antigone in Sophocles play.
