Netflix

Developments in contemporary Latina/os media are the result not only of an exponential­ ly growing Latina/o population in the United States but also of the synergy between trans­ formations in the global political economy and the emergence of new media platforms for production, distribution, and consumption. To reflect upon the emergence of the industry is to consider the politics of the labeling of the Latina/o community and the eventual con­ figuration of a market audience. It also requires a confrontation with the cultural history of representations and stereotypes of Latina/os, particularly in radio, TV, film, and the in­ternet, and the transnational aesthetics and dynamics of media produced by and/or for Latina/os in the United States. If the notion of media revolves around a technological means of communication, it also encompasses the practices and institutions from within which the Latina/o communities are imagined, produced, and consumed. At the start of the 21st century, the idea of Latina/os in media revolved around a handful of Latina/o stars in Hollywood who often performed stereotypical representations, a racialized and marginal Spanish-language radio industry, and two Spanish television networks, Univi­sion and Telemundo. A more complex constellation of representations has evolved in both mainstream and Spanish-language media, among them new platforms for production and resistance, including social media (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat), radio podcasts and streaming services (e.g., Hulu and Netflix), and a more active and engaged audience that consumes media in Spanish, English, and even Spanglish.

La mia tesi di laurea triennale in Grammatica Latina raccoglieva ed analizzava gli incantesimi in lingua latina presenti nella serie web audiovisiva Netflix "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" (2018-2020).
Preliminarmente, si è cercato di far luce sul particolare sistema di comunicazione in cui si inserisce la serie televisiva, adattamento della serie comics omonima; si è poi spaziato sul versante della magia antica, segnatamente nei punti di contatto con la webserie tv Netflix.
In seguito, la trattazione degli incantesimi latini si è divisa in un’analisi quantitativa, che consente di comprendere la frequenza e la distribuzione delle formule latine e il loro rapporto con quelle in inglese, e una qualitativa, che entra nel dettaglio di singole occorrenze significative.
Dalla prima si è evinto come gli incantesimi latini siano preferiti a quelli inglesi per due principali criteri: la genericità dell’incantesimo e la ‘potenza magica’ intrinseca al latino.
Una seconda valutazione più dettagliata delle frasi latine ha messo in luce come la forma di questi incantesimi sia spesso un pastiche di anglismi e usi del latino volgare, non disgiunti da prestiti di memoria poetica, come anche espressioni bibliche. A questi modelli tradizionali si accosta l'uso di strumenti odierni, di uso facile e immediato, fruibili sul web, come ebook di divulgazione d’incantesimi in latino o la stessa piattaforma Google Translate, che consente di tradurre approssimativamente da e in latino.
È possibile altresì ricondurre le deviazioni dal latino standard sia al genere della scrittura magica delle defixiones, caratterizzato da un’applicazione già in partenza distorta della morfologia e sintassi latina, sia a errori da lingua d’arrivo dell’inglese.
La ricerca è originale: non risultano altri studi sul latino di "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" (né sulle sue caratteristiche formali, né sui suoi precedenti nella cultura magica antica).

Televizyon yayıncılığı günümüzde yalnızca geleneksel yöntemler aracılığıyla değil aynı zamanda dijital teknolojiler aracılığı ile de sağlanmaktadır. İnternet üzerinden yayın yapan dijital yayıncılık sistemleri çeşitlenerek dijital platformların kurulmasına öncülük etmiştir. Bu platformlar arasında dünya çapında en yaygın olanlardan birisi ise Netflix’tir. Tüm dünyada 190’dan fazla ülkede yayın yapan Netflix, girdiği her pazarda o pazara uygun pazarlama stratejileri planlamaktadır. İnternet teknolojilerinin gelişmesi ve herkes tarafından ulaşılabilir hale gelmesiyle yaygınlaşan yeni medya ortamları ve Web 2.0 ile beraber kullanıma geçen sosyal medya ağları, pazarlama kavramına yeni bir boyut getirmiştir. Günümüzde bir pazarlama yöntemi olarak kullanılan sosyal medyanın ortaya çıkışı ile beraber çeşitli amaçlara ve kitlelere yönelik sosyal medya platformları ortaya çıkmış ve bu platformlar git gide çeşitlenmiştir. Geleneksel pazarlama yöntemlerinin yanı sıra dijital pazarlama yöntemlerinin gelişmesi ile beraber ortaya çıkan dijital pazarlama ve alt türü olan sosyal medya pazarlaması, örneklem olarak seçilen Netflix Türkiye’nin oldukça yoğun kullandığı bir pazarlama stratejisi haline gelmiştir. Küresel bir dijital platform olan Netflix, girdiği Türkiye pazarında daha çok bilinmek ve yeni bir marka imajı oluşturmak için küyerel bir pazarlama stratejisi gütmüştür. Bu küyerel strateji kapsamında özellikle yerelleştirmenin kullanılması, Netflix Türkiye’nin sosyal medya hesaplarında dikkat çekmektedir. Takipçileriyle samimi ve Türk kültürünü tanıyan bir üslupla iletişime geçen Netflix Türkiye, kısa sürede büyük kitlelere ulaşmıştır. Netflix Türkiye’nin Twitter hesabının ayrıntılı bir analizinin yapıldığı bu çalışmada Netflix Türkiye’nin sosyal medya pazarlamasında kullandığı küyerel kodlar incelenmiştir. Yeni bir kültüre adaptasyon sürecinde kullanılan stratejiler arasında yerelleştirmenin etkisinin de ölçüldüğü bu çalışmada Netflix Türkiye hesabının paylaştığı Tweetler belirlenen kategoriler ve kodlar bağlamında incelenmiştir. Elde edilen verilere dair analizler çalışmanın sonuç bölümünde yer almıştır.

A proposta desse artigo é apresentar uma breve análise do consumo transmídia de ficção seriada audiovisual sob a perspectiva dos modos de socialidade e estratégias cotidianas de consumidores, com a análise de interações nos top comments dos três posts mais recentes da página oficial da Netflix Brasil no Facebook. Observa-se, então, como os usuários do serviço de streaming que participam das discussões na página interagem entre si e com a empresa, discutindo produtos midiáticos produzidos e/ou distribuídos por ela. Cabe ressaltar que esse artigo é um recorte da pesquisa de mestrado em desenvolvimento no PPGMC/UFF e inscrita no grupo "Mídias, redes e jovens: usos e apropriações em contextos digitais". Palavras-Chave: Consumo transmídia; Mídia; Cotidiano; Netflix; Facebook. Introdução O trabalho se propõe a uma breve discussão sobre o consumo de mídia e as imbricações cotidianas. Mais especificamente, aborda-se o consumo de ficção seriada audiovisual e como esse faz incursões no cotidiano de consumidores, avaliando-se três postagens e interações derivadas de comentários a elas, na página oficial da Netflix no Brasil no Facebook. Observa-se, assim, como usuários do serviço de streaming que participam das discussões na página interagem entre si e com a empresa, discutindo produtos midiáticos produzidos e/ou distribuídos por ela. Esse artigo é parte de um estudo mais amplo e pretende-se como investigação primária do objeto, na pesquisa sobre consumo transmídia de ficção seriada audiovisual, a partir da análise de interações interpessoais e com o perfil da empresa de usuários da Netfllix e que acompanham sua página oficial brasileira na rede social Facebook, em uma abordagem metodológica inspirada pela netnografia. A pesquisa está em desenvolvimento no PPGMC/UFF e inscrita no grupo "Mídias, redes e jovens: usos e apropriações em contextos digitais".

This edited volume examines the historical, political, cultural, and aesthetic implications of re-visiting Restoration Spain (1874-1931) in television costume dramas produced since 2000. Contributors analyze, from different theoretical approaches and disciplinary perspectives, the appeal that the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries hold for twenty-first-century Spanish audiences, as well as for international viewers who consume these programs through new media platforms. Themes and issues explored include: the production of televisual heritage, representations of period technologies, evolving constructions of gender, hybridization of television genres, and television as historian. Expanding the scope of inquiry in Spanish media studies, this collection seeks to bring Spain into wider discussions of media and historical representation and visual and material culture in Europe, the Americas, and beyond.

O objetivo deste artigo é o de analisar a narrativa da primeira temporada da websérie Sex education (2019, Netflix), a partir dos aspectos de valores de gênero, de educação e de consumo midiático. A metodologia adotada é de cunho descritivo, de abordagem qualitativa e utiliza a técnica de análise de conteúdo. O corpus selecionado é composto pelos oito episódios da primeira temporada de Sex education. O principal resultado demonstra que a maioria das questões sobre gênero são representadas sob uma perspectiva feminista; as discussões sobre valores educacionais e morais foram construídas em antíteses, girando em torno de formalidade e informalidade; e os valores atribuídos ao consumo midiático juvenil estavam ligados a uma finalidade social.

RESUMO A ficção seriada audiovisual, produzida nos Estados Unidos, Jane, the virgin, está em exibição desde 2014. Sua narrativa, com diferentes estruturas polissêmicas, torna o uso da metalinguagem uma constante. É dentro deste contexto, portanto, que o presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar as práticas de metalinguagem presentes no seriado Jane, the virgin. A pesquisa direcionada às práticas audiovisuais de metalinguagem possibilita a oportunidade de compreender como ocorre esse processo que assume essa linguagem dentro da já existente narrativa. A metodologia constitui-se de abordagem qualitativa, do tipo descritiva, com técnica de análise de conteúdo. A partir de um universo de vinte e dois episódios, que pertencem a primeira temporada da série (2014-2015) foram selecionados três deles nos quais analisou-se, por meio de três dimensões de metalinguagem: a linguagem da telenovela, a figura do narrador e a utilização da rede social digital Twitter. Os resultados alcançados demonstram que a narrativa do seriado possibilita um jogo de textos metalinguísticos ao tecer uma espécie de narrativa peculiar que mistura a linguagem da telenovela latina com as dos seriados estadunidenses.

In October 2019, Netflix launched its first reality talent show Rhythm & Flow. It has been praised for revitalizing the talent competition format and its authentic approach to hip-hop. Furthermore, the show has a large number of female contestants, and is distinctly and unapologetically ‘black’. This paper analyzes Rhythm & Flow’s representation of hip-hop, race and gender. What is the social, cultural and political relevance of introducing a reality talent show about hip-hop, in a time where music genres are increasingly blurred? Using Benedict Anderson’s notion of the ‘imagined community’ and drawing on works on the meaning of race and gender in hip-hop, I argue that Rhythm & Flow imagines the hip-hop community as a real and unified entity, to draw attention to persistent racial inequality in the US. The show uses the reality talent format as a vehicle for emotional engagement, while trading in liveness and interactivity for the authenticity of socio-political relevance.

This paper analyzes the role of ethics, privacy and technology in Netflix's South Korean survival drama, Squid Game (2021). The show's popularity hinges on its mordant critique of capitalism, particularly the global disappearance of the middle class. This tension between personal and communal survival intersects with despair, surveillance and the illusion of consent.

An analysis of the Netflix series, "When They See Us", by Ava DuVernay and the racial biases in police activities, the reevaluation needed in interrogation processes, and the blasphemous involvement from former president, Donald Trump, in the Central Park Five court case.

This article examines the mutual domestication of users and recommendation algorithms on Netflix. Based on 25 interviews with users and an inductive analysis of their practices and profiles on the platform, we discuss five dynamics through which this mutual domesti- cation occurs: personalization, or the ways in which individualized relationships between users and the platform are built; how algorithmic recommendations are integrated into a matrix of cultural codes; the rituals through which they are incorporated into spatial and temporal processes in daily life; the resistance to various aspects of Netflix as a form to enact agency; and the conversion or transformation of the private consumption of the platform into a public issue. The conclusion elaborates on the theoretical and analytical implications of this approach, to rethink the relationship between algorithms and culture.

Merlí (Lozano, 2015) se constituyó como una de las series aclamadas por el público a la hora de hablar sobre el sistema educativo. Considerando la potencia que las series poseen en tanto recurso de pensamiento para analizar las problemáticas actuales, el presente artículo se propone el abordaje de posibles efectos que la cultura escolar y las prácticas docentes que de ella emanan poseen sobre la deserción escolar de los alumnos. Para ello nos valdremos de los desarrollos de Bourdieu y Passeron impulsaron en la década del '60 sobre la sociología crítica de la educación, para ponerlos a trabajar en función de las características actuales de la institución educativa. Entendemos que desde la psicología educacional, los profesionales debemos trabajar en el análisis y problematización de lo instituido, para poder construir herramientas instituyentes que fomenten una educación que aloje a los niños, niñas y adolescentes.

This article examines the screen interfaces that have become central to the experience of television, film, and video content in an era when Internet-distributed video coexists with older technologies. We outline how these interfaces represent new sites of media circulation power in their ability to direct audiences toward certain kinds of experience and content, and therefore away from others, power that we contextualize in the longer term history of media industries. We identify multiple levels of video interface: those provided by various video devices, those offered by video services, those of marketplaces that sell services, and aggregated interfaces that blend all of these activities. We identify mechanisms of circulation power that can be applied to all of these interface types, including interface placement, recommendation, search and other functions, and metric display power. We conclude by outlining some ways in which policy and regulation might respond to these emerging forms of media circulation power, and the implications for research on streaming services and other developments in the media industries.

In the last two years, there has been a huge investment in entertainment by the Saudi Government. In 2018, Netflix was launched in Saudi Arabia and soon become popular. This study examines Saudi viewers' perceptions of the Netflix Spanish series La Casa de Papel because this series went viral. The study focuses on Saudi viewers' motivation for watching the series and their justification of criminal behaviors. A sample of 400 Saudi students from the age range 18-35 answered the survey. The results indicated a significant correlation between viewing time, empathy with characters, and external attribution of criminal behaviors. The Robin Hood pattern of robbery implied in the series was acceptable to 62% of the sample. The role of the Professor as the mastermind of the operation was attributed to the necessity of having an outsider to assist the gang members by 85% of the respondents.

La globalización de los servicios over-the-top (de libre transmisión) basados en el modelo de suscripción, el triunfo de la distribución de contenidos B2C (directo al consumidor) con la consiguiente eliminación de intermediarios, y la implantación de los procesos de business intelligence (inteligencia empresarial) dentro de estas compañías ha repercutido
en un nuevo tipo de segmentación de usuarios, basada en los gustos y las preferencias audiovisuales, a la vez globalizadas y fragmentadas. Netflix es una de las empresas que mejor ejemplifica la ventaja competitiva de este nuevo prototipado de la audiencia, lo que le ha permitido elevar su nivel de apuesta en términos de inversión económica para la producción de contenido original.

In March 2017, Netflix released a twelve-episode Japanese show titled Samurai Gourmet, about 60-year-old Takeshi Kasumi who has trouble adapting to his recent retirement. In the show, Kasumi attempts to navigate his retirement by eating in different establishments, often encountering social and age- or class-related cultural roadblocks. These roadblocks frustrate him, and he often longs for the freedom of an ancient Japanese samurai. To overcome these roadblocks, he imagines what the samurai would do in these situations as a learning process in how to act and respond.

This paper will explore how the past is used as contrast of the present, to critically engage with memory and the longing for the past in the present. This is done visually, with Kasumi imagining the samurai in real life, blending the space between past and present in his mind, setting images of the contemporary restaurants against a backdrop of characters in period clothing.

The visual blending of past and present in Kasumi’s mind challenges the role nostalgia has on us, as well as how we engage with the past as a form of understanding our present. I will use two episodes (3: “Mackerel in the Morning” and 12: “A Memory of Hashed Beef and Rice”) as examples for how Kasumi’s blending of the past and present strengthens the ties between geographical and temporal nostalgia of two different pasts: his, and the (imagined past of the) samurai. The episodes also situate Kasumi’s nostalgia against discovering meaning in life as a retiree.

This paper traces linkages between the commoditisation of the Web and "app-centric media" , an environment composed of a multitude of concrete-but-connected software applications. Within this environment, multiplatform HTML5 apps are often framed as the antithesis of Apple's iOS and Google/Android "siloed" mobile app platforms, but this rhetoric of openness masks corporate involvement in the development of HTML5 and the commoditisation of the very protocols used to build the Web. To illustrate this process, this paper examines one new element of HTML5 that was hotly debated: the inclusion of digital rights management (DRM) protocols. Proponents of DRM in HTML5 argued it would increase overall interoperability while balancing the rights of content creators, providers and users. This paper argues, however, that it instead essentially legitimises U.S.-centric copyright protections on a global scale and allows the future development of the Web to be dominated by a select group of media institutions.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the philosophical discourse concerning good and evil seems to be subsumed into three major areas; meta-ethics which describes the nature of good and bad, normative ethics concerning how human beings ought to behave and applied ethics which attends to particular moral issues. All three of the above concepts find expression in the network television landscape, most explicitly through the Netflix' sitcom called 'The Good Place". The show dramatizes actual ethics classes and concepts on screen without dumbing down the concepts being described. In this way, it serves as an informal educational tool.

This chapter considers the rapid rise in media visibility of the Tasmanian comedian Hannah Gadsby since 2017 through an analysis of her stand-up show Nanette, which was filmed in 2018 as an original Netflix stand-up com­ edy special, and the wider cultural commentary around her. It argues that Gadsby’s globalised success must be understood in relation to the spread of a broader affective mood in celebrity culture in the wake of the #MeToo move­ ment – one that is characterised by the increased registering and visibility of women’s anger. To this end, it explores both the possibilities and limitations of ‘celebritised anger’ in a transnational media culture that appears to be increasingly attuned to identity politics – or what has been called the ‘woke­ ness industrial complex’. I argue that the imperfect political conditions occa­ sioned by capitalist media culture can only allow for a ‘messy anger’ that does not fully meet the requirements for an effective feminist anger, but that this messy anger has some value nonetheless. I consider how Gadsby’s own articulation of her ambivalent relationship to anger can help us to under­ stand the deep forms of ‘affective injustice’ (Srinivasan 2018) that structure and underpin contemporary media culture. I also explore the ways in which Gadsby is routinely figured as hailing from a deeply conservative small-town in Tasmania, Australia’s most southern state, and the subtle ways in which this might work to contain some of the more radical possibilities of rage.

İnternetin kişiler arasında iletişim amacıyla
kullanılmaya başlaması, yeni bir medya
aracını doğurdu. Bu doğum, oturmuş medya
araçları olan yazılı basın, radyo, televizyon
ve sinemayı “geleneksel medya” kategorisine
soktu. Dijital ortamda ortaya çıkan yeni medya
türü ise teknoloji tarihi açısından öbürlerinden
bir kopuşu ifade ettiği için böyle adlandırıldı.1
Bunun yanında, bu teknolojik kopuş, üretim
ilişkileri açısından bir yenilik getirmedi. Bu
yüzden medya ürünlerinin üretimindeki ilişkiler yine esas olarak üretim aracının sahibi ve
bu araçta ücretli çalışan işçiler arasında sürmeye devam ediyor. Günümüzdeki yaygın dijital
medya platformlarının, tüketicileri bir üretici
konumuna getirdiği, bu açıdan kapitalizmin
genel üretim ilişkilerini değiştirdiği iddia ediliyor. Dijital medya kullanıcılarının, şirketten
satın aldığı metanın üretimine de ücretsiz
olarak katıldıkları teziyle “üre-tüketici” kavramı ortaya atılıyor.2
Daha doğrusu kavram,
dijital distopyacı yeni bir yoruma sokuluyor.
Aslında tüketici, dijital platformun daha çok
satış yapmak ve reklam geliri elde etmek için
kullandığı kişisel bilgilerin sağlayıcısı olsa da
sonuçta bunların pazarda satılır bir ürün haline
gelmesi platformda ücretli çalışan işçilerin
eseridir. Bu açıdan, kapitalist üretim ilişkileri
aynı şeklini dijital medya platformlarında da
korumaktadır. Dahası, günümüzde uluslararası
büyük şirketlerin bir kısmını meydana getiren
dijital medya platformları, yerel üreticileri
baskılayarak etkisizleştirmekte ya da kendine
katmaktadır. Bununla birlikte aynı ülkelerde,
içerik üretimini o ülke vatandaşlarıyla ve o
ülke üzerinde de gerçekleştirmektedir. Türkiye’de Netflix için üretilen “Hakan: Muhafız”,
“Aşk 101”, “Atiye” gibi diziler de bu kapsamdadır.3
Aynı zamanda dünya piyasası, istisna
ülkeler dışında, son 10 yılda yayılan birkaç
büyük şirket tarafından domine edilmiştir. Bu
açıdan dijital medya platformları, emperyalist
nitelik taşıyan tekeller şeklinde varlıklarını
sürdürmektedir.
Dijital medyanın “yeni” olması, bu tekelciliğin pekişmesinin de önünü açmaktadır. Çünkü
devletlerin binlerce yıldır geliştirdiği ticari
kuralların ve prensiplerin dışında, yeniden tanımlanması gereken bir alandır. Bu alanda
yapılan ticaretin henüz yeterince tanımlanmaması, örnek vermek gerekirse, “dijital gümrük vergisi” üzerine bir çalışmanın olmaması,
rekabet avantajı kazanmış büyük şirketler için
hızlı yayılmayı ve tekelleşmeyi kolaylaştıracak
bir boşluk sağlamaktadır. Dijital hizmet vergisi gibi yurtiçi ticari işlemleri sağlayan vergiler
devreye girmiş olsa da yerli üreticiyi koruyacak bir bakış açısı henüz geliştirilememiştir.
Bu da tekelleşen dijital medya platformlarının
bu özelliklerini pekiştirmelerine olanak sağladığı gibi, bunların siyasi ve kültürel alanda da
etkinliklerini arttırmasına yol açmaktadır.

Netflix, as a tech company, is currently the largest global streaming platform challenging traditional US studios. This article analyses Netflix’s transnational business strategies disrupting such status quo by focusing, on one local example: Mexico. Literature on Netflix has identified some of the transnational strategies studied here, this article adds to the discussion the use of local elements to infiltrate the power hub of Hollywood. By using the holistic scope of Political Economy, this research presents an integrated examination of: (a) the structural conditions of the Mexican audiovisual system in which Netflix is immersed; (b) the tech company’s expansion strategies; (c) the case of the movie Roma as a pivot-like tactic to push forward different company goals. A Netflix é um fenômeno recente e pouco estudado em sua relação com a audiência. É perceptível o quanto a marca se empenha nas suas publicações em redes sociais, para atrair o espalhamento nos mesmos. O presente trabalho analisa a relação marca-usuário na plataforma do Twitter. Utilizando a série original Sense8 como objeto de estudo, há a tentativa de estabelecer como se dá e o funcionamento dessa relação e o que isso contribui para a construção da comunidade de marca e o consumo de experiência, através de um estudo de caso. Criado o panorama da construção e manutenção das relações sociais com a audiência, estabelece-se então como o espalhamento e o consumo de experiência são inerentes ao processo criado pela Netflix.

Open TV shows how we have left “the network era” far behind and entered the networked era, with the web opening up new possibilities for independent producers, entrepreneurs, and media audiences. Based on interviews with writers, producers, show-runners, and network executives, visits to festivals and award shows, and the experience of producing his own series, Aymar Jean Christian argues that the web brought innovation to television by opening up series development to new producers, fans, and sponsors that had previously been excluded. Online access to distribution provides creative freedom for indie producers, allows for more diverse storytelling from marginalized communities, and introduces new ways of releasing and awarding shows.

Compreender a tendência do mercado audiovisual para os próximos anos no contexto das séries televisivas é o objetivo deste trabalho. O estudo de caso contemplará a observação dos seriados como uma proposta de entretenimento para o futuro da produção nacional, os quais priorizam o diálogo interativo com os fãs. Na primeira parte do trabalho, será observada a mudança de papel da Televisão quando estabelecido um novo momento da comunicação propiciado pela internet. A segunda parte trata do estabelecimento da TV por assinatura, baseada na história da HBO e na recente sanção da Lei 12.485, que força a quebra do modelo hegemônico das narrativas das TV abertas brasileiras. As emissoras de TV recorrem ao mundo digital em busca de novas plataformas que permitam a criação de universos narrativos mais complexos e que agreguem valor à Televisão, estabelecendo marcas de qualidade dentro do contexto das redes sociais, priorizando a forma narrativa estudada na terceira parte deste trabalho, as séries.

A proposta desse trabalho é investigar o mito da ubiquidade e a inteligência coletiva (que estão atrelados), em "conversas" entre usuários da página @NetflixBrasil, na rede social digital Facebook, em que tentam entender, coletivamente, questões tangentes às novas configurações de exibição e consumo de audiovisual presentes na Netflix. Para isso, realiza-se algumas considerações sobre a organização tribal e em rede desses sujeitos, e a análise de inspiração netnográfica de suas interações na página.

This paper examines the ways in which television imagines the relationship between creators and audiences in the contemporary media landscape. This is developed through an examination of the inaugural seasons of three American television dramas that debuted between October 2016 and March 2017: Netflix’s The OA and 13 Reasons Why and HBO’s Westworld; all three series featured the character of a storyteller who was killed within the narrative, in what was presented as an act of collaboration between the storyteller and their audience. We will question whether new participatory modes of media engagement truly engender ‘the birth of the viewer’ through a symbolic ‘killing’ of the creator, or merely serve to reaffirm the authority of the creator, reimagining the author-function as a powerful marketing brand.

O objetivo deste ensaio é refletir sobre algumas determinações objetivas e subjetivas que constituem as distintas formas de violência presentes no filme espanhol O Poço (2019), de Gutierrez Urrutia, a partir do referencial da Teoria Crítica da Sociedade. A análise será orientada segundo três manifestações da violência presentes na obra: a violência estrutural, o autoritarismo social e a violência contra a barbárie ou revolucionária.

Informar, entretener y educar son las funciones clásicas de la televisión tradicional pero la llegada de nuevos servicios televisivos como las plataformas de vídeo bajo demanda plantean una nueva situación para este medio de comunicación aún por estudiar. A través de la cuantificación y clasificación del contenido de no ficción de estas plataformas, este Trabajo de Fin de Grado busca confirmar si estas plataformas han asumido el rol de un medio de información.

Resumen: En una sociedad de la imagen es menester preguntarnos qué contenidos y representaciones circulan y cuáles elegimos (si es que tenemos la potestad de hacerlo) como consumo, entendiendo que aquello que se presenta en las múltiples pantallas está atravesado por estereotipos y roles a cumplir en una sociedad capitalista y patriarcal. De esta manera, el siguiente trabajo intenta, a través del análisis de caso de la serie británica Sex Education, analizar, repensar y cuestionar los modos de representación de las temáticas contemporáneas como son el feminismo, las identidades de género, las orientaciones sexuales y la pertenencia de clase y el rol asignado a las instituciones familiares y escolares. Abstract: In societies such as this one, where we are so dependent on images and visual content, it is our job to ask ourselves what representations are available to us and which ones we choose (if we really have the opportunity to do it) to consume, while understanding that every visual product contains a variety of stereotypes and gender roles inherent to a capitalistic and patriarchal society. In this way, the following essay will analyze the British TV series "Sex Education" in order to rethink and question different ways of representation for contemporary subjects, such as: feminism, gender identities, sexual orientations, class membership, and the assigned roles of family and school institution. They ask (and frequently answer) the question: how do we script stories about real events that are often still fresh in our memories and may involve living people? Each essay goes beyond general discussion of adaptation and media to engage with the specifics of adapting true life events—addressing pertinent and controversial questions around scriptwriting, representation, ethics, memory, forms of history, and methodological interventions. Written for readers interested in how memory works on culture as well as screenwriting choices, the collection offers new perspectives on historical media and commercial media that is currently being produced, as well as on media created by the book’s contributors themselves.

Netflix, which has been increasing in popularity during recent years and has millions of viewers, is an international platform since it has multicultural films and their translations. Due to the content of TV series, films, documentaries, and various programs on Netflix, it appeals to the young and adult audiences and besides, offers unique options for children. This study aims to argue that the programs on Netflix are supportive, especially in learning and supporting a second foreign language. Second foreign language learning methods and language competence topics constitute the theoretical background. As a general theme, using videos, and movies in learning and developing foreign language is taken as a basis. Within the scope of this research, a questionnaire consisting of 8 questions to analyse the Netflix programs was used and given to a sample of 150 students studying translation in the English-Turkish language pair. These students are Netflix programs' audiences. The data obtained from the questionnaire has been analysed with the descriptive analysis method and a general situation assessment has been received concerning whether Netflix could help improve foreign language competence. As a result of this research, it has been determined that Netflix programs as a video-film category may contribute to the development of the second language. Thus, by using it in a controlled manner, Netflix may contribute to foreign language competence. A internet, juntamente com a revolução digital, transformou totalmente a forma como nos comunicamos, como consumimos, e como passamos a assistir TV e Cinema. O presente projeto objetiva identificar o perfil dos consumidores da Netflix na região Metropolitana de Belém, empresa norte-americana que faz parte do mercado de nicho, e que tem contribuído para mudança de hábito dos jovens no consumo de séries e filmes online via streaming. Essa mudança pode ser traduzida na convergência midiática (JENKINS, 2008) em que os meios de comunicação de massa repensam suas lógicas de transmissão de conteúdo e caminham, quase alinhados, com os chamados meios emergentes. Na construção da pesquisa partimos da seguinte indagação: quem é o consumidor da Netflix em Belém e quais estratégias comunicativas publicitárias são utilizadas pela empresa na relação com o público? Como procedimentos metodológicos recorremos à pesquisa quantitativa, mesclada com opinião pública na identificação do perfil deste consumidor, aplicando questionário elaborado no Google Doc, com respostas de 1.659 usuários da região metropolitana de Belém.

This paper analyzes the series Sex Education's role in the transnational dissemination of discourses on non-normative sexualities, equality and LGbtiq+ diversity. From a LGbtiq+ Studies perspective, a mixed design with non-experimental ex-post-facto methodology has been applied through transmedia measurement instruments and the iLGa World and Global Attitudes reports. Netflix-through Sex Education-is confirmed to transnationally spread values of diversity and LGbtiq+ equality in countries without full social and legal protection for such diversity, promoting the construction of alternative subjectivities.
