Appearing like an ordinary hardcover novel, this book details the history of Africans in America, dedicating a page for each year since 1619. Only four pages contain any actual information on the history of Africans in America. Blount uses the absence of information to make readers reflect on what is not said about African-American history.https://scholarship.rollins.edu/book_arts/1011/thumbnail.jp

The reports issued by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) in 1996- 1997 about salt water intrusion into the Upper Floridan Aquifer and about requirements for water management plans led to a series of numerous research and planning activities. Among those was research carried out in 1997-1998 in Glynn and McIntosh counties on public perception and knowledge about current water issues. The research consisted of intensive interviews with selected individuals and a mail questionnaire to randomly selected coastal residents. The results of the research, originally reported solely in terms of raw scores and percentages, are re-presented here as information to construct cultural models, which allow for differentiation of survey results in relation to socioeconomic categories. Communities that are the least developed economically are more concerned about development than water conservation. The reverse is also the case.

ABSTRACT With the devastating impacts of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and more recently the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, disaster questions about the vulnerability and resiliency of fishing communities in the Gulf of Mexico have been on the minds of local, regional, and national governmental agencies as well as numerous researchers and non-governmental organizations. The continued natural and now technological disasters in the Gulf of Mexico have placed a great deal of strain on communities dependent upon both commercial and recreational fishing. In 2008 a two-year long study to develop social indicators of vulnerability and resiliency for fishing-reliant communities in the Gulf of Mexico was undertaken. In addition, as part of the research design the accuracy of the social indicator descriptions of these places with ethnographic studies was triangulated. Comparisons of the combined ethnographic rankings with the quantitative indicators were positive and statistically significant. The research design thus confirmed that the developed indicators were, in fact, reliable measures for the concepts under consideration.

Organizationally, the volume contains: acknowledgements; an introduction by Professor Dil; twenty-two of Professor Greenberg's essays on linguistics; and a bibliography of his published works, compiled by Dr. Dil and Emily Hallin. Considering these in turn, the introduction is brief (four pages), but provides a biographical sketch and traces Dr. Greenberg's academic career from graduate training at Northwestern and Yale Universities to professorships at Columbia and Stanford. His notable achievements in linguistics are recorded, chronologically, including the series of articles in the late 19^0's and early 1950's on African linguistic classification. These articles, originally published in the Southwestern Journal of Anthropology, were revised in 1955 to form the classic Studies in African Linguistic Classification and in 1963 as The Languages of Africa.

Although many types of MPAs exist—including reserves, sanctuaries, and parks—each involves a group of people collectively engaged in decision-making and most MPAs have both biological and social goals. Biological goals include rehabilitating damaged habitats, sustaining biodiversity, protecting marine life, and providing a laboratory for basic natural science inquiry. Examples of social goals include restoring commercial, recreational, or subsistence fisheries, creating ecotourism experiences, generating economic opportunities, and empowering coastal communities. Biological and social goals may be contradictory or unequally appealing to different constituency groups, resulting in controversy and conflict. These dynamics contribute to the high rate of MPA failure—approaching 90% in some countries (White et al. 2002). In most cases, MPA design and impacts are examined principally from a biological perspective. Use of mainly biological evaluation criteria may contribute to MPAs being c...

The history of the participation of African- Americans in the coastal marine fisheries of Georgia (USA) is described from a cul- tural landscape perspective. The nature of the participation was tied to characteristics of landscape, and a series of landscapes existed over a period of 250 years. In the plantation period, African-Americans were virtually the only marine fishermen. Fishing was subsistence and low- level artisanal. In the postbellum period, that pattern was expanded in scope, since fishing was one of the few livelihoods available to freed African- Americans. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, however, African- Americans were marginalized in the oyster fishery, due prima- rily to commercialization. The new landscape included migrant fisher- men who had more capital and more modern technology. During the twentieth century, similar developments occurred first in the shrimp and then the blue crab fisheries. Marginalization was due to lack of resources to compete effec...
