ABSTRACT Background: Retroviral replication is retarded by several known host restriction factors, including APOBEC cytidine deaminases, tetherin, and TRIM5alpha. Myeloid cells support relatively low levels of viral replication, and this characteristic was recently attributed to the activity of the SAM-domain and HD-domain containing protein (SAMHD1).
