    The Europe 2020 strategy identifies drop out from i-VET or early school leaving (ESL) as a key challenge to meeting employment targets. The Code RED project (http://www.codered-project.eu) has been developed in response to the high levels of early school leaving, drop-out and exclusion from education that often lead to unemployment, poverty and social deprivation. In taking actions towards achieving its goals, the project has been experimenting with a (serious) games' co-design methodology [1] through a dedicated co-design workshops' series, run within 2014 in the UK, Greece, Italy and Cyprus.     This paper presents a conceptual knowledge modelling framework that aims at facilitating the decision support functions in the emergency management domain. The EDXL-based group of standards is the most complete approach to address emergency information sharing and data exchange across various actors involved in the process of disaster management. Therefore, it is selected as the central basis of knowledge models to utilise and extend with semantic information models towards enhanced knowledge-level interoperability and more efficient decision making.

    <p>WQeMS aims to provide an operational Water Quality Emergency Monitoring Service to the water utilities industry in relation with the quality of the ‘water we drink’. This Copernicus service focuses on monitoring lakes for the delivery of drinking water and will provide open geospatial data products structured in Essential Water Variables. While Essential Climate variables are fully defined, a set of Essential Water Variables was proposed by GEOSS but was never fully adopted. In this communication we will present a metadata manager tool called GeM+ that adopts a general framework for Essential Variables (EV) that includes a renewed proposal for Essential Water Variables. EVs are included in a keyword library that relates them to SDG indicators. In addition, the GEM+ includes a library of quality measures defined in QualityML (that inherits and extends the UncertML approach) vocabulary that will be used and tested for the Water Quality Emergency Monitoring Service. The quality need for a vocabulary proposed by QualityML is now being adopted by the ISO 19157-3 proposal. GEM+ also implements the ISO 19115-1 approach for lineage (provenance) that allows to carefully document data product workflows used to create the geospatial products as a mechanism to describe the traceability, quality and reproducibility of the dada. Examples of water related dataset have been prepared showing how EVs, quality measures and provenance is used to semantically tag data, document quantitative quality estimations and present the sources and processes used to elaborate this Copernicus service candidate products.</p><p> </p><p>WQeMS has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101004157.</p>

    A recent report by the Social Protection Committee on the social dimension in the EU 2020 strategy, stated that greater emphasis must be put on innovating the training of human capital to be responsible for improving the quality of life for vulnerable people throughout Europe, including persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Education plays a pivotal role in this process and presents many challenges, especially with regard to the practice learning. However, arranging practice learning for students carries the challenge of finding qualified mentors/practice assessors, finding sufficient numbers of placements for all students, and addressing the risks associated with the safety and well-being of students and trainees. An innovative approach to experiencing practice learning is through simulation- and game-based education where students engage in an imitation of a real-world scenario in playful ways.     This paper presents the design and development of a system aiming at supporting and aiding people with cognitive decline. Utilising the available technology, the presented system replaces currently available tools, while it also offers considerable functionality advantages. The aim is to identify new ways in which existing knowledge from the fields of medicine, nursing, psychology, cognitive science, and computer science can be combined and used for the support of people with cognitive decline. Existing assistive tools for people with cognitive decline have been analysed, leading to the conclusion that these tools may well be replaced by mobile applications combined in a single applications' suite, e.g. Available for android smartphone devices. A functional prototype assistive application has been already for android platform, with features that offer support to the basic needs of caregivers and people with cognitive decline, giving more emphasis on people with early Alzheimer's disease symptoms.

    Currently in the travel domain, most of the travel products are sold through global distribution aystems (GDSs). Since only major airline companies or hotel chains can afford to join GDSs, it is difficult for small and medium enterprises to market their travel products. In this chapter, we describe a middleware, called SATINE, to address this problem. In the SATINE middleware, existing travel applications are wrapped as Web services. Web services, as such, is of limited use because the service consumer must know all the details of the Web service like the functionality of the Web service (what it does) and the content and the structure of input and output messages. Therefore, we annotate both the service functionality and the service messages with Web ontology language (OWL) ontologies.     Modern control systems implementations, especially in large–scale systems, assume the interoperation of different types of sensors, actuators, controllers and software algorithms, being physical or cyber. In most cases, the scalability and interoperability of the control system are compromised by its design, which is based on a fixed configuration of specific components with certain knowledge of their specific characteristics. This work presents an innovative feedback control architecture framework, in which classical and modern feedback control techniques can be combined with domain knowledge (thematic, location and time) in order to enable the online plugging of components in a feedback control system and the subsequent reconfiguration and adaptation of the system.

    There is currently a rapid evolution of technologies enabling the “Internet-of-Things” paradigm, which leads to the design of systems with augmented sensing, analysis, and actuation capabilities. The intelligent control research community is beginning to recognize the challenge of designing flexible and adaptable control systems that will take advantage of the online evolution of the number and types of “things” in a large-scale system. Responding to this challenge, in a previous article, we designed and presented a semantically enhanced control system supervisor that integrates a knowledge graph and deductive inference capabilities, to achieve the online (re)configuration of feedback control schemes. In this article, we show that by exploiting the capabilities of this supervisor, we facilitate the automatic synthesis and plugging of model-based controllers for the space heating problem in multizone buildings.     Inclusive education aims for equal opportunities to be provided to all children regardless of their socioeconomic background, genre, or disability. There are various technological tools that can support the inclusive education of students with complex communication needs. Despite the fact that the parents’ roles in supporting pupils with disabilities is vital, to date, there has been a lack of research investigating the roles of Cypriot parents of these children. The research aim was to explore the experiences of parents on the island who support students with complex communication needs, regarding how they perceive their roles as parents. In-depth interviews were conducted with six parents of children aged five to twelve years. Data were analysed based on thematic analysis.     This paper proposes an experimental design for the compositional classification of 177 ceramic samples deriving from domestic and tomb contexts in Cyprus dated to the Early and Middle Bronze Age. In this design, ceramic sample classification is achieved with three well-known methods, a standard statistical learning method termed k-Nearest Neighbours (k-NN), a method using Decision Trees (C4.5) and a more complex neural network based method known as Learning Vector Quantisation (LVQ). It is shown that the examination of classification patterns through confusion matrices allows the exploitation of inter-class relationships and the ability to provide extra information to the researcher about the compositional categorisation of samples; which could not be grouped (with certainty) into classes with the employment of ceramic petrography.     The medical emergency response comprises a domain with complex processes, encompassing multiple heterogeneous entities, from organisations involved in the response to human actors to key information sources. Due to the heterogeneity of the entities and the complexity of the domain, it is important to fully understand the individual processes in which the components are involved and their inter-operations, before attempting to design any technological tool for coordination and decision support. This work starts with the gluing together and visualisation of the interactions of involved entities into a conceptual model, along the identified five workspaces of emergency response. The modelling visualises the domain processes, in a way that reveals the necessary communication and coordination points, the required data sources and data flows, as well as the required decision support needs. Work continues with the identification and modelling of the event-driven discrete-time-based dynamics of the emergency response processes and their compositions, using Petri nets as the modelling technique. Subsequently, an integrated model of the process is presented, which facilitates the parallelisation of the tasks undertaken in an emergency incident.

    A recent report by the Social Protection Committee on the social dimension in the EU 2020 strategy, stated that greater emphasis must be put on innovating the training of human capital to be responsible for improving the quality of life for vulnerable people throughout Europe, including persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Education plays a pivotal role in this process and presents many challenges, especially with regard to the practice learning. However, arranging practice learning for students carries the challenge of finding qualified mentors/practice assessors, finding sufficient numbers of placements for all students, and addressing the risks associated with the safety and well-being of students and trainees. An innovative approach to experiencing practice learning is through simulation- and game-based education where students engage in an imitation of a real-world scenario in playful ways. An immediate advantage of interactive simulations and games is the provision of risk-free environments in cases where consequences are too costly or hazardous in real life; with a simulated practice game there are no consequences outside the boundaries of the game environment. Responding to the above challenges, the Play2Do project (http://www.play2do.eu) develops a 3D gaming environment that provides a safe and readily accessible environment where students studying to become teachers of people with intellectual disabilities can learn by interacting with non-player characters in a simulation of real world scenarios. The approach uses a more modern, constructivist approach to education and represents an example of innovative education in a digital era, particularly a computer-games era. The core constituent of the gaming/simulation environment are the real-world scenarios. In our work, we engaged special education experts from the UK, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria and Cyprus and created first a sound understanding of what exact needs are addressed by the simulation environment and second a set of six well-defined scenarios. For instance, dealing with a case in the autism spectrum, the player faces certain behaviour patterns in a simulation setting and finds his/her way through the scenes by interpreting the situation and responding appropriately. A key research finding is that gaming and virtual simulations in practice learning may be better used as a tool to give teachers a certain level of confidence and knowledge but not as a replacement of actual practice.
