Traveloka.com, an online travel ticket booking service based in Jakarta, has launched its television commercials (TVC) in two versions, “Cari Tiket Pesawat” (a man looking for a flight ticket) and “Cari Hotel” (a woman looking for a hotel voucher). The separation of the versions into a man’s story and woman’s story with their own “identities” is an interesting topic to be analyzed with gender perspective. Roland Barthes’ two-order-of-signification method (or mythologies) can be used to show how the myths of gender identification (identity determining) constructed the TVCs by analyzing their connotations. The myths of gender identification constructed the Traveloka.com’s TVCs by the concept of role distribution, the stereotype of strong-man and weak-woman, subordination, and objectification of woman.
