University teaching is complicated by competing pressures on academic staff. Imperatives including research and engagement with community are just two of the myriad pressures that academics balance in careers of full workloads and shifting demands. This chapter highlights the tensions inherent in the introduction of new priorities, in this case, practice-based learning. It provides a case study of a single institution and offers a perspective on successful implementation that includes consideration of workload, resourcing and a shared vision for pedagogical change.

Programs that introduce academic staff to learning and teaching in Higher Education are now well established in many countries. In Australia they are becoming more systematised to respond to the professionalism of university learning and teaching and a growing regard to quality assurance. This paper outlines a project where a range of typical models of Foundations programs were described and, with the assistance of a stakeholder group, the characteristics of the models that promoted effectiveness and efficiency were identified. This work was a sub-project of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council grant, Preparing Academics to Teach in Higher Education (PATHE). In the initial phase, existing data about Australian Foundation programs was analysed to identify characteristics that could be used in describing different models. The second phase employed a multi-stage methodology: identification of successful Foundation programs that represented elements of the model; writing case st...

Considerable time is invested in developing foundations programs and keeping them up-to-date. This sub-project seeks to identify and make available resources to support this practice. The intention is to: Identify and select resources currently used in foundations programs Develop a mechanism for sharing resources Identify any gaps in resources. As a community of practice we are very good at sharing informally and adopting and adapting ideas from our colleagues for our own foundations contexts and needs. This subproject seeks to support that process and at the same time acknowledge the contributions by individuals and teams in the foundations community. A review of the documents produced in the earlier stage of the PATHE project has identified a number of „Big Ideas‟ in tertiary teaching that are taught across most foundations programs. This workshop is designed to: Find out what resources you use in your foundations programs to teach these „Big Ideas‟, why you think they work and y...

This showcase provides an overview of a leadership capacity building initiative for the scholarship of teaching through a faculty-based scholars’ network, which supports strategic change through leadership, activities embedded in authentic learning tasks. The new leaders developed through this initiative will provide a critical mass for extending the network by adopting a cascade model for distributive leadership through mentoring of future implementations within and across institutions. This showcase will provide a review of the literature, and an overview of the work in progress. It will conclude with a presentation of some guiding principles for discussion and a call for expressions of interest for cascade partners.

The authors describe ethical issues they have encountered when teachers develop narratives about their own practice and then again when these narratives are later explored using drama techniques. Specifically, they look at the developmental process itself, both in the creation of the original narrative and the subsequent creation of a dramatic text. They also examine the climate of trust and respect that needs to be in place when teachers share narratives especially when the author of the narrative is not known. Issues of power relationships also arise especially when soliciting narratives from pre-service teachers and sharing them with wider audiences. (Note 1)
... In this context the project 'Drama in the Workplace, set out to explore the possible connections between drama methods used in school-based educational settings and methods used in training with a particular vocational focus. ...
