Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease characterized by the excessive accumulation of fat in adipose tissue driven by hypertrophy and hyperplasia of adipocytes through adipogenesis. Adipogenesis plays a key role in the development of obesity and related metabolic disorders, which makes it potential target for the therapeutic approach to obesity. An increasing number of studies confirm the pleiotropic action of the combined treatment with metformin and statins, suggesting their anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, and anti-adipogenic effect. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of different doses of metformin (MET) and simvastatin (SIM) on the expression of key transcription factors of adipogenesis. Mouse 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were induced to differentiation in adipogenic medium with sustained MET and SIM treatment to assess the effect on adipogenesis. Nine days after initiating adipogenesis, the cells were prepared for further experiments, including Oil Red O stainin...

Background/Aim: Prevention of inflammation and alveolar bone atrophy is very important in oral surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the use of two osteoplastic bio-resorbable membranes in order to prevent inflammatory complications and atrophy of the alveolar part of the mandible after surgical interventions. Material and Methods: We examined 86 patients 45-70 years old who were classified into four groups. In group 1, there were 21 patients who had a "bio-resorbable membrane type 1 implanted. The group 2 consisted of 23 persons treated with bio-resorbable membrane type 2. Only the occurrence of inflammatory complications after the placement of these membranes was monitored. Group 3 included 20 persons treated with membrane type 1 and group 4 included 22 patients treated with membrane type 2 to prevent both inflammatory complications and atrophy of the alveolar part of the mandible. The level of atrophy of the alveolar bone after one year was determined by cone-beam co...

Background/Aim. Early childhood caries (ECC) is a special form of caries in primary dentition that affect teeth after eruption, with rapid progression, later symptomatol- ogy and numerous complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of ECC among different ethnic groups of preschool children in the South Baka District. Methods. The survey was performed as a cross- sectional analytical study on the sample of preschool chil- dren of both sexes and different ethnic groups in the South Baka District. The diagnosis and the clinical form of ECC was defined by dental check-ups according to the modified Wyne's criteria: the initial form (type 1) shows carious lesions without disturbing the surface structure of the tooth enamel, the moderate form (type 2) shows cari- ous lesions affecting one or two teeth or their surfaces, the middle form (type 3) shows carious lesions affecting more than two teeth or their surfaces, the severe form (type 4) shows the presence of...

Introduction. Early childhood caries (ECC) is a multicausal, reversible and infectious disease that spreads over milk teeth. This study was aimed at examining the influence of causal factors on the occurrence and the incidence of caries in early childhood as well as at defining the model for its prediction. Material and Methods. The research was carried out as an analytical cross-sectional study. It included 521 children aged from 13 to 71 months who live on the territory of the district of Srem and attend nursery schools. The dental status was determined by dental examination. The data on socioeconomic conditions, habits and health care awareness were obtained by questionnaires (completed by their parents). The variation significance testing was carried out by the variance analysis and χ² test, and the mutual correlation of early childhood caries and risk factors, which could be predictors of diseases, was carried out by multilogistic regression analysis. Results. The prevalence of...

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a widespread disease that may lead to serious complications and impact the whole society. For these reasons, we look for a predictive model that could be easily applied whenever and wherever necessary, especially in poor environments. As a result, we create human friendly classifiers for ECC that could be utilized in prevention programs. These classifiers are rule-based, with a few rules, easy to use even without computers, and without a loss in predictive performance. For this purpose, we mined association rules and clustered them by their contents. Next, we employed a genetic algorithm to assemble a classifier using dissimilar association rules. The proposed approach was tested on a data set about ECC in the South Backa area (Vojvodina, Serbia). We compared the performance of the resulting classifiers to that of the logistic regression model built around the previously identified risk factors.

Introduction/Objective University teachers have a challenging task in finding creative ways to present educational content One of them is to create applications dedicated to educational purposes, which students can use on their mobile phones any time The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of mobile learning of dentistry students during COVID-19 pandemic Methods The prospective study involved 56 students from two medical faculties in the Balkans, who continued to study online after the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic Online teaching was based on material in the form of PowerPoint presentations In order to provide an additional educational tool, a step-by-step mobile application for managing traumatic dental injuries was developed After one week of using that mobile application, all students completed a questionnaire in electronic form concerning teaching satisfaction Results Over 90% of the respondents stated that the application facilitated a learning process, improve...

Introduction. Frequency of pediatric mandibular fractures is relatively uncommon. Apart from rare exceptions, there is minimal invasive access in the treatment of those injuries in order to avoid the future developmental disorders. Case report. During the game with a colt, a 6-year-old boy was kicked by hoof in the chin. The child did not lose consciousness and did not experience nausea or vomiting. According to clinical examination and radiological analysis, diagnosis was assigned as dislocated mandibular fracture in the parasymphysis part of the jaw and luxation injury of teeth 31 and 72. The surgical treatment under general anesthesia encompassed reduction and bimanual manipulation of bone fragments up to the optimal restoration of the dental occlusion, along with osteosynthesis with titanium miniplates. Luxated deciduous tooth 72 at the fracture line was extracted and luxated permanent tooth 31 was fixed to tooth 41 with wire. The patient was given antibiotic therapy. Additional...

Background/Aim. Early childhood caries (ECC) is still unexplored in Vojvodina an autonomous province of the Republic of Serbia. The aim of this study was to determine its prevalence in preschoolers and to define the risk factors that affect the prevalence of this disease. Methods. The survey was designed as a cross-sectional analytical study of preschool children in the region of Vojvodina, the Republic of Serbia. Sample type has been projected as a systematic sample and contained both parents and their children from 13 to 71 months of age. The study was designed with a dental examination of children and self-administered questionnaire which included: gender of children, self-referred socioeconomic status, parental education, oral status and health information level about parents and their child, child oral hygiene habits, type of feeding during infancy, consumption of sweets, and use of medical syrups. The data was further analyzed using the SPSS for Windows Microsoft Excel, versio...

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a potentially severe disease affecting children all over the world. The available findings are mostly based on a logistic regression model, but data mining, in particular association rule mining, could be used to extract more information from the same data set. ECC data was collected in a cross-sectional analytical study of the 10% sample of preschool children in the South Bačka area (Vojvodina, Serbia). Association rules were extracted from the data by association rule mining. Risk factors were extracted from the highly ranked association rules. Discovered dominant risk factors include male gender, frequent breastfeeding (with other risk factors), high birth order, language, and low body weight at birth. Low health awareness of parents was significantly associated to ECC only in male children. The discovered risk factors are mostly confirmed by the literature, which corroborates the value of the methods.
