We conducted an information retrieval test in a group of Dutch-speaking and native English-speaking nursing students and analyzed the errors in the queries that did not lead to the selection of any relevant citations. Zero recall is either caused by zero result queries, by badly formulated queries which only yield irrelevant citations, or by bad relevance judgment. This error analysis shows that there are 8 error types, the most important of which are underspecification, selection of irrelevant MeSH terms and incorrect use of Boolean operators.

L'objectiu d'aquest article és demostrar que l'enfocament holístic d'un "despatx de traducció simulat", que treballa conjuntament diverses competències tecnològiques que en un altre context s'haurien d'ensenyar per separat en unitats aïllades, permet que l'alumnat de traducció es familiaritzi amb les noves maneres de treballar i amb noves tecnologies. The aim of the present article is to show how the holistic approach of a “simulated translation bureau” (STB), bringing together many technological skills that would otherwise be taught separately in isolated course units, succeeds in familiarising translation students with the new ways of working and with new technologies.El objetivo del presente artículo es demostrar que la aproximación holística de un "despacho de traducción simulado", que engloba el trabajo de varias competencias tecnológicas que en otro contexto tendrían que enseñarse por separado en unidades aisladas, permite que el ...

The multilingual Electronic Lexicon of Communication Terminology (ELeCT) compiled at our universities focuses on subject fields that are in constant flux. Its authors have to deal with the challenges of new and obsolete concepts, provisional terms, competing synonyms, Anglicization, conceptual gaps and meaning shifts. The present paper illustrates these challenges with examples from the Dutch and Hungarian sections of ELeCT and takes them as a starting point for a broader discussion of principles of terminology and terminography. The examples illustrate that terminographers can and should take different decisions depending on the target users of their termbase and that in most cases they will be expected to give guidance rather than to normalize.

There have been several attempts in the literature at distinguishing subclasses of the heterogeneous category of adverbials. The article reviews a number of the distinctions that have been proposed and assesses their relevance for explaining the positional potential and/or the intonation of English adverbials.

Tools that automatically extract terms and their equivalents in other languages from parallel corpora can contribute to multilingual professional communication in more than one way. By means of a use case with data from a medical web site with point of care evidence summaries (Ebpracticenet), we illustrate how hybrid multilingual automatic term extraction from parallel corpora works and how it can be used in a practical application such as search engine optimisation. The original aim was to use the result of the extraction to improve the recall of a search engine by allowing automated multilingual searches. Two additional possible applications were found while considering the data: searching via related forms and searching via strongly semantically related words. The second stage of this research was to find the most suitable format for the required manual validation of the raw extraction results and to compare the validation process when performed by a domain expert versus a termin...

This paper reports on an ongoing long-term project to build an English-and-Dutch termbase using the MeSH terms (Medical Subject Headings) as input. Although from the start NLP applications had been envisaged, the database has mainly been built according to the traditional principles of terminology management for human translation. With important parts of the project now nearing completion, the question arises whether and how the material could be made available in a traditional dictionary format as well as in a format that can be used in language technology applications. It is argued that the traditional detailed working method used, based on explicit evidence and recording a wealth of information on synonyms, variants, usage and reliability, can also be profitable to NLP applications. It is unlikely, however, that a single format can be found to make the data available for all possible purposes. Rather, the current database will have to act as a common repository from which various...
