The first aim of this paper is to analyze the features that have motivated Chinese outbound investments in the European Union. The paper outlines also the policies adopted by the European institutions and its member states to encourage the increase of the Chinese FDI without harming the internal European market, and consequently phase out all concerns that are afflicting the European public opinion. The second purpose is more focused on Poland. The paper offers an updated vision of Chinese FDI in this country, by outlining the specific trends of the general strategy in this country. With this purpose, the analysis offers a double-sided perspective of the two partners. From the Chinese perspective, the motivation and pattern of the Chinese investors depends on an investment evaluation taking into consideration the potentiality of the host country to invest in both for Chinese export strategies and to acquire specific technologies. From the Polish point of view, the paper put into evi...

The article deals with the international monetary relations around the years of the crisis of the Bretton Woods system. This contribution is based on new US sources recently released, and on French public and private archives, as well as on the collection of oral sources available in Paris at the Georges Pompidou Foundation. Thanks to these sources, the article focuses the monetary troubles of the late 1960's and the 1970's in the framework of the increasingly difficult relationships between the EEC and the United States. It shows as well that evolution of the US position has been influenced only partly by Nixon's domestic approach to the main economic policy problems, and especially to foreign economic policy. The US administration had in fact a strategy that was reconsidering world economic balance of power, in which Europe could be an economic competitor and not anymore only a political partner. For the European countries, and especially for the EEC, the discussions a...

In particular, it studies the complex relationships between the city, the Polish government, the League of Nations, and the Allies about the use of the port of Danzig and the increasing competition with the port of Gdynia, built by the Polish government with support of the French one and some french private companies.

The article addresses the question to what extent American antitrust policy in Germany and Italy during the 1950s, was a success or not. Did these nations adopt this policy, did they adapt themselves to it, or did they completely reject it? By a detailed comparison of these two big European nations, Germany and Italy—both defeated powers of the Second World War, and both therefore strongly dependent on postwar American aid—the effects of the American antitrust policy will be analyzed. Eventually, the Germans better adapted, after initial resistance of German big business, to the American plans than the Italians, however, only in an amended and softer form. The Italian resistance—but we even use the expression prolonged rejection—to the economic reforms were much stronger. The US administration envisioned a unified free European market without cartels as early as 1943, however, it would take another fifty years before these ideas would be implemented.

Mercury has been one of the most persistent cases in contemporary history of international market regulations and this in spite of its having been affected by important technological changes and the regular discovery of new deposits. This paper offers an approach to the least known period, although perhaps the one in which the greatest rises in process and production occurred as a consequence of market manipulation. The period coincides with a series of agreements between the Spanish and the Italian producers and the outcome was a worldwide cartel known as “Mercurio Europeo” which came into being in 1928. The aims of this work will, therefore, be first to describe the features of the various stages of development of the international mercury market during the first half of the twentieth century, with emphasis on the characteristics and conditioning factors in each period. Secondly, the objective is to analyze the various market agreements that came about, the effectiveness of the cl...

This article describes the features of the international mercury market during the first half of the twentieth century. It analyzes the various market agreements made, their effectiveness, and their consequences. The period studied is little understood, although it was one in which mercury production greatly increased. It was also one that saw persistent efforts at market manipulation, owing to a series of agreements between Spanish and Italian producers that proved very effective until the arrival of shipments of mercury produced by Soviet bloc members and by some developing countries.
