This paper summarizes an archaeological survey methodology aimed to contrast and to improve the information contained in the Archaeological Inventories about the closest area to “El Casetón de la Era II”, the first enclosure excavated in the North Meseta. The objective is to do the best with a future locational analysis that will bring new knowledge about a kind of sites that are changing many of the previous ideas about the Recent Prehistory in the middle Douro Valley.

This paper summarizes the methodology applied to the study of the prehistoric occupation in the environment close to the first enclosure excavated in the North Meseta: “El Casetón de la Era II”. The locational analysis was designed from some theoretic questions organized in 3 blocks: orography, visibility and accessibility. Using these questions as a guideline we established concepts as “orographic prominence” or “visual control” with a statistic parameter; besides, we chose evaluation criteria for the hypothesis, working guidelines and the most suitable software. The results stand out because of their analogical and objective nature in contrast of previous studies that express their conclusions in a digital and subjective way. To sum up, it’s a work model suitable for a fragmented archaeological record and for a plain landscape, which can, however, be useful to future researches in other contexts that search in the landscape the habitability decisions of the late societies.

Since 1975 the site of "Las Pozas" has named the Copper Age in Spanish Northern Plateau. In the last decade several causewayed enclosures dated to this period have been discovered. This new situation has led us to revise the foundational site using remote sensing techniques. The infrared images have allowed us to distinguish two overlapping enclosures at "Las Pozas": a north one with three interrupted ditches and a southern group composed of two circles. This paper describes the characteristics of both enclosures using as well the information provided by 1979 and 1987 excavations. We believe this discovery certifies that causewayed enclosures were a common feature in the Douro Valley during the Copper Age.

Sonnography and Tc-99m sestamibi scintigraphy are the most requested preoperative imaging tests nowdays in the surgery of hyperparathyroidism. The aim of our article is to know if Computerized Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are useful as a location study and in which cases it would be more justified to ask these radiologic techniques. For that we report our results with 29 patients at all diagnosed as hyperparathyroidism (26 primary forms and 3 secondary ones) and operated by our E.N.T. Department later. On 20 of them a cervical CT was asked before the parathyroidectomy and on the rest 9, a MRI with sensitivities of 65% and 88.9% respectively. We think both complementary explorations must not be solicited by routine but they can represent a help in the cases in that sonnography and scintigraphy are not able to show the possible adenoma or hiperplasia, particularly in recurrent hyperparathyroidisms, reinterventions or suspect of parathyroid glands in an atypical location.

Sand flies are recognized as the major vector of canine visceral leishmaniasis. However, in some areas of Brazil where sand flies do not occur, this disease is found in humans and dogs. There has been speculation that ticks might play a role in transmission of canine visceral leishmaniasis and the DNA of Leishmania spp. has been reported in whole ticks. We investigated the presence of Leishmania spp. promastigotes in the intestines, ovaries, and salivary glands of Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks collected from tick-infested dogs in two cities of Brazil. We used 66 dogs that tested positive and 33 that tested negative for Leishmania spp. according to direct cytological examination assays. Ten ticks were collected from each dog and dissected to collect the intestines, ovaries, and salivary glands for immunohistochemistry (IHC) and diagnostic real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). IHC results showed Leishmania spp. in 98, 14, and 8 % of the intestines, ovaries, and salivary gland...

Deep suprasternal infections secondary to cardiac surgery are uncommon but can compromise the life ofthe patient. After a sternotomy it is possible to find late cervico-thoracic abscesses specially in the presence of risk factors. We are reporting the case of a diabetic female of 67 years old with aortocoronary bypass who was diagnosed of suprasternal and neck base abscess in relation to her intervention 11 years later. It was necessary to practice drainage of the collection and wide spectrum antibioticotherapy with good evolution. 4 months after the surgery she was admitted again suffering a thoracic abscess that required treatment by Cardiac Surgery. The clinical follow-up was 3 years and no new recurrences have been detected.

Tick infestation may cause several problems including affecting domestic animal health and reducing the production of meat and milk, among others. Resistance to several classes of acaricides have been reported, forcing researchers to search for alternative measures, such as vaccines against ticks, to ensure tick control while having no or at least low negative impacts on the environment and public health. However, the current commercially available vaccines in different strains of Rhipicephalus microplus are reported to be of low efficacy. Fortunately, reverse vaccinology approaches have shown positive results in the new generation of vaccines. On this basis, a synthetic peptide from the ATAQ protein, which is present in the gut and Malpighi tubes of R. microplus, was synthesized. The ATAQ proteins were isolated, characterized and sequenced from several species of the genus Rhipicephalus. The alignment showed 93.3% identity among DNA sequences of ATAQs from these species. Because of this, immunization trials with this peptide were conducted on mice, rabbits and cattle to evaluate the humoral immune response and the efficacy against Rhipicephalus sanguineus in addition to R. microplus. Based on recent results, we conclude that reverse vaccinology is a promising approach because it is more accurate and faster than conventional methods in the detection of potential antigens to use in anti-tick vaccines. It is not only applicable against R. microplus but also against tick species that play important roles in spreading other diseases. ATAQ proteins should be considered as the antigen in new trials to develop a multi-antigenic vaccine. Although these peptides behave as hapten and are not able to be recognized by the immune system on its own, using carriers and adjuvants helps its presentation and induces strong immune responses. Furthermore, an efficiency of 35% reduction in overall life cycle parameters was reported for R. microplus (98% for ELISA responder animals) and 47% for R. sanguineus. Although not yet enough to prevent the environment to infestation of ticks, this still constitutes a promising strategy that could be applied to integrated measures on tick control and in new research that develops anti-tick vaccines.

We report the clinical case of a 41 years old male with nasal obstruction of 1 year, epistaxis and epiphora. The ENT exam showed a bleeding red mass in left nasal fossa and CT joint to IRM revealed a tumoral process on that level and informed about its extension to adyacents structures (cavum, ethmoides, sphenoids and maxillary sinus). The biopsy was positive for cystic adenoid carcinoma. Our patient was operated by paralateronasal rhinotomy with removal of the tumor. One year later we found recurrence on the left orbital floor and maxilar sinus. The Oncology Department informed that it was not possible a treatment with radiotherapy or chemotherapy because the low sensitivity of that lesion those treatment.

We report the case of a 54 years old male diagnosed as ethmoidal epidermoid carcinoma which, after almost 1 year--asymptomatic period, debuted with facial pain (cluster headache) without another associated clinic. Sino-nasal malignant tumours represent about 5%-6% in all ENT carcinomas and they use to be of later diagnosis, with high probability of local recurrence and invasiveness on structures like orbit and skull base. The main treatment for ethmoidal squamous carcinomas is surgery and depending on staging can require radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. A bibliographic review is done at this respect.

It has been carried out an inquest in a geriatric group in institutionalised regime, classifying people interviewed depending on dental health in three groups: Group I: Edentate ancients bearers of total prosthesis. Group II: Ancients with remanent pieces. Group III: Ancients with remanent pieces and bearers of prosthesis. In the present work, all findings related to oral health are detailed, referred uniquely to group II: "Ancients with permanent pieces". Obtained data let us get to some conclusions we consider must be of general diffusion for trying to understand and to solve the existing disputable in this segment of the population, so long forgotten and marginal.

Laryngeal or hypopharyngeal localization of adenoid cystic carcinoma is rare due to the poor distribution of the accesory salivary glands in this area. We report one case of such neoplasm on that area, with its diagnosis confirmed histologically. The required a total laryngectomy with later reoperations because of hemorrhage and pharyngeal fistula. One year after the surgery and in spite of postoperative radiotherapy multiple pulmonary metastasis were detected causing the death of the patient. We review the literature of this tumor whose prognosis is much worse than epidermoid or scamous carcinoma.

Constructing models of inflation and/or baryogenesis in the context of N=1 supergravity is known to be difficult as the finite energy density during inflation typically generates large (order the Hubble scale) mass terms. This is the well-known eta problem in inflation. The same effect gives masses along low energy flat directions of the scalar potential thus potentially preventing Affleck-Dine baryogenesis to occur. It has been shown that adding a chiral multiplet S coupled to the inflaton (with a shift symmetry) can serve to stabilize the inflationary potential and allows one to derive simple inflationary potentials without an eta problem. Here, we show that by coupling the same stabilizing field S to the flat direction, may naturally lead to a negative mass-squared contribution to the flat direction thus generating the necessarily large vacuum expectation value needed to realize Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. We trace the evolution of the inflaton, stabilizer, and flat direction field, as well as a Polonyi-like modulus responsible for soft supersymmetry breaking.

Granular cell tumor, myoblastoma or Abrikossoff's tumor is an uncommon benign lesion, usually of slow-growing, that shows a predilection for the oral cavity, especially the tongue. Its real etiopathogenia remains still controversial and in it's histogenesis have been implicated several cell types. We report the case of a 18 years old woman with that diagnosis, confirmed in AP, who was operated by removal of the tumoration that was located in the left half-tongue. After 28 months she has not suffered any recurrences.

Sinonasal osteocartilaginous necrosis induced by the abuse of inhaled cocaine must be considered in the differential diagnosis of those pathologies that produce facial midline destructions. We report two cases corresponding to women admitted in our Hospital because of such entity. There were analysed their respective clinical histories, exploration data, complementary tests, medical-surgical treatment and evolution. Cocaine is one of the drugs that has increased in last 10 years producing an elevated number of complications, as we could proved on the bibliographic review performed.

Since the introduction of antituberculous medications, the incidence of laryngeal tuberculosis (LTB) has decreased. However, it is a fact the increasing number of cases of pulmonary or extrapulmonary TB mainly caused by the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. We report the clinical case of a 72 years old male with dysphonia secondary to LTB which masqueraded a carcinoma. It's certain diagnosis was the histopathologic exam of the biopsy obtained by microsurgery. There was a residual TB in lung after a complete study of Internal Medicine Department.

We report the clinical case of a 39 years old female diagnosed as a chronic lymphocytic tiroiditis by F.N.A.B. with multinodular goiter of long evolution. The patient was operated by total thyroidectomy and her final anatomopathologic result was papillary carcinoma diffuse sclerosing variant. During the surgical act several cervical nodes were detected and removed being informed the most of them as metastasic. A review of the literature at respect of this malignant neoplasm is performed.

Aminoalcohol 3, a compound of interest for the synthesis of carbocyclic analogs of nucleosides, was prepared from (±)-(2endo,3exo)bicyclo[2.2.1]hept-5-ene-2,3-dimethanol. In the key step, oxidative degradation of a carboxamide was efficiently achieved by treatment of amidoester 10 with lead tetraacetate in tert-butanol.Graphic

X-ray structural analysis allowed the molecular conformation of 3-ferrocenyl-3-isopropylcyclopropene to be established, where the ferrocenyl fragment occupies a bisecting position relative to the three-membered ring. Some heterolytic cleavage of a σ CC bond in cyclopropene was observed. As a result, predominantly linear products are formed: 1,1-dimethyl-2-ferrocenyl-1,3-butadiene, 3-ferrocenyl-4-methyl-2-pentene, 3-ferrocenyl-4-methyl-3-pentenine and also 3-isopropyl-1H-cyclopentaferrocene. Cyclopropene forms a classical Diels–Alder adduct with 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran and an adduct with the intermediate 3-isopropyl-1,2-(1-propene-1,3-diyl)ferrocene. X-ray structural data of exo-1,5-diphenyl-3-anti-ferrocenyl-3-syn-isopropyl-6,7-benzo-8-oxatricyclo[3.2.1.02,4]oct-6-ene are presented.
