This volume offers a coherent collection of 26 papers presented at an international conference held in November 2010, exploring the latest achievements of formal and comparative linguistics applied to the teaching of Latin. The three sections (syntax and morphology, semantics and pragmatics, history and theory of teaching) compare Latin with different ancient and modern languages, aiming to represent grammar rules as the product of mental processes. The book is addressed to linguists, teachers and students, who are looking for new perspectives to update their approach to classical Latin.

The main goal of this paper is to show that the flexible word order of Latin does not prevent us from fruitfully applying to Latin a set of constituency tests that have been developed in modern linguistics. Particularly, we will show that, when the concept of constituent is correctly defined, it effectively applies to Latin. We will do so by comparing English, a rigid word order language, Italian, a more flexible word order language and Latin, which is even freer. This paper is organized as follows, In section 1, we offer a brief introduction on the issues that concern the current theoretical debate on the topic. In section 2, we make a general point, namely that constituents may be formed by words that are not contiguous, at least in languages with a flexible word order. In section 3, we discuss various tests that identify VP and TP as possible constituents in Latin: these tests includes pro-form substitution, ellipsis and fragment answers. Section 4 discusses tests to identify the CP layer as a constituent: these include pro-form substitution and extraposition. In the same section we deal with a possible complication arising from the use of pro-form substitution as a constituency test but we show that it does not affect the cases we discuss. Our conclusion in Section 5 is that constituents may be discontinuous in Latin (as in other languages), they may not be easy to identify, but they do exist.

The study of nominal compounds in classical antiquity shows some similarities with contemporary linguistics, especially generative grammar. Ancient grammarians wished to develop a synchronic typology based on the inflectional features of the two members of the compound and the presence of the derivation. The introduction of syntactic criteria and the identification of the special characteristics of bahuvrīhi compounds are the main achievements of the Indian grammarians. Starting from a fundamentally Sanskrit typology, Latin linguistics in the 19th and 20th century attempted to develop new theories.

Summary We owe the emergence of the linguistic idea of phrase to Jan Amos Comenius (1592–1670), in his Grammatica Latino-vernacula (Leszno 1649). He proposes to use the stylistic term ‘phrasis’ with a new linguistic meaning, in order to indicate a group of words arranged in a hierarchical structure, which is an intermediate syntactic unit between the word and the sentence. This idea allows us to back-date by a century the discovery of “groups of words”, which is usually ascribed to Gabriel Girard (1677–1774) in 1747.

In this paper, the history of the studies on Latin nominal compounding is outlined. In the first part, Th. L. gives an overview of the development from the ancient grammarians to the beginning of scientific research in 19 century. In delineating the progress achieved by the mostly philological approaches, also the comparative and linguistic contributions are included in the discussion. It was particularly through the neogrammarian perspective that some aspects of Indo-European word formation became also an important factor for studies on Latin compounds. In the second part, R. O. discusses the main innovations that took place in 2(? century. While the historical research in the traditional fields of typology and stylistics went on, two new paradigms of general lingusitics shed new light on the synchronic side of compounding. The first attempts to investigate the phenomenon of Latin composition as a system were elaborated by structural linguistics. This perspective was carried on by generative grammar, whose most important progress was the formulation of word formation rules and the discussion of their interaction with other components of grammar.
