The configuration of urban projects using ICTs is an essential aspect in the education of the future architect. The student must know the technologies that will facilitate their development and presentation, as well as the needs of the citizen and the expectations of the project. The present article focuses on evaluating both the initial and final intrinsic motivation of the student in the process of incorporating gamified virtual reality systems for visualization and interaction in urban projects. The results reflect a significant increase in student motivation as he / she understands the use and potential of such systems in the visualization and understanding of architectural and urban space.

This work is based on the hypothesis that implementation of virtual reality (VR) technology in the classroom helps to improve student’s academic performance. The proposal involves new teaching methodologies that incorporate VR and gamification techniques in video games projects development. The methodological implementation takes place in the subjects of Modern Art, and Sound and Virtual Reality of Video Games degree. Both subjects are based in artistic content, so the study focuses on the contribution that technology provides as a medium for the development of video game content. Variables such as Difficulty, degree of satisfaction or usefulness (utility) from student’s responses to questionnaires are evaluated. Results show high correlations between variables and explain in a way the latent variable, motivation. This research approach will initially be implemented in the academic courses of the School of New Interactive Technologies of the University of Barcelona.

Using enhanced learning technologies (TEL) including immersive virtual reality environments, we are seeking to achieve a new way of assessing subjects of 3D arts. We have developed a project based on Scenario Centered Curriculum (SCC), where the students have to think, design, convey, validate, and build a civil project using new technologies that help in the assessment process. We have used gamification techniques and game engines to evaluate planned tasks in which students can demonstrate the skills they developed in the scenarios. The assessment is integrated in the creation of a 3D complex model focused on the construction of a building in a virtual space. This whole process will be carried out by gamification techniques to embed the assessment of the 3D models with the objective of improving students learning.

This article is the continuation of the research published in WorldCist 2020 under the topic “L) Information technologies in education”, which describes the educational results of the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems in an inter-university workshop. The purpose consists in a real case study in which experiences are observed and evaluated. The main objective is to encourage and improve the preparation of students in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and BIM methodologies. These skills that must be developed to face the transformations of the construction sector. The participants were 27 students from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana Azcapotzalco (UAM-Azc), the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB) and the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura La Salle (URL). These students participated in the “1st International BIM Workshop on the Resolution of Social Projects 2020”, to carry out a preliminary project of urban equipment in Mexico City (CDMX). The activity was focused into exploring the use of virtual environments, applying the BIM methodology and bringing students closer to scenarios committed to social reality. The evaluation of the user experience was performed with a quantitative survey. The results showed a favorable adoption of BIM systems. The main contribution of the article is the validation of educational methodologies through enhanced learning with technology. This study also aims to be the first stage of academic interoperability between the universities ETSAB-UPC, La Salle URL and UAM Azc.Postprint (author's final draft

A painting is always a potential form of collage. The discovery made by Braque and Picasso (1a, 1B ) was already implied in the carefully-done executions of tapestries backgrounds and mural decorating of all the Italian and Flemish paintings which started to be produced since Giotto's, where the represented and the presented were mixed up (2a ). And also, in a more pedantic way, in a famous painting of Courbet "L'Atelier du Peintre, allégorie réelle" (1885) (2b). In this work, the artist is shown sitting in front of his work, grasping a brush with his right hand while holding a palette, which is at the centre of the composition, in his left hand. There are some figures surrounding the master, some nearer, others further away, in the corners of the atelier one can still see silhouettes which we don't really know whether they belong to real characters or to painted ones on the master's canvases. This ambiguity brings us back to the foreground, to this central...

The article analyzes the results obtained in the process of incorporating gamified 3D visual systems for urban projects into the degree and master of architecture. The process has been designed through a first collection of profile student’s data, followed by the practical process of working in real urban environments, and finally collecting the results lined to motivation, satisfaction and usability of the process. This project seeks to design new applications from a rearrangement of urban space using gamify-interactive digital systems in order to improve the user experience. The results reveal a low initial motivation in the students, not understanding that the usefulness of the games and the virtual environments can contribute to the visualization of the architectural and urban project. Nevertheless, the proposal has improved the initial perception, raising the interest in the subject and, ultimately, the teamwork skills and the three-dimensional presentation of the project.

Since the international governmental institutions required and/or recommended (according to the regulations of each country and continent) all public works to be certified in the BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology, public and private institutions and universities have sought to integrate BIM into their production and educational processes. This requires the university academic environment to focus its efforts on training students in this methodology, as they will need to apply it in any future work activities related to architecture and construction. This article seeks to analyze which methods are being used by higher education institutions around the world to integrate BIM implementation in AEC (architecture, engineering, and construction) degrees and to determine if a set of regulatory guidelines exists that could serve as a common foundation for institutions to improve this integration process. To this end, a systematic literature review was carried out on WOS and SC...

The aim of this article is to study how students currently understand the conception of space through different media and how that understanding helps them to intervene in the space. Firstly, the process of teaching and learning as well as innovative supporting technologies are analysed, revealing the characteristics of the contemporary student profile and better ways of teaching according to it. Secondly, we describe the evaluation of an experiment with a virtual reality (VR) system for urban project design with students of architecture from two universities. The premise is that the technology used in VR is familiar to the current profile of students. This paper aims to study the advantages and disadvantages of this trend and to find a balance. To do so, we use a quantitative method to evaluate students' profiles and their level of satisfaction with the system. The results were obtained by a questionnaire and a survey, which show the role and use of technologies in the students...

The introduction of Information and Communication Technology tools in the architectural practice can be challenging. This chapter discusses an educational approach to teach Geographic Information Systems to architecture students in the Barcelona School of Architecture. The methodology uses a combination of theory lectures, worked-out examples with faded guidance using a real-world case of study, and self-directed discovery in a project-based learning activity. The results of pre-course and post-course surveys are also discussed to illustrate the workflow of students when using spatial data, their perception on using GIS applications, and their impressions regarding the development the course. Finally, the possible reasons for the limited adoption of these tools in the architectural field are also discussed.

Online quizzes are a powerful educational tool that allow learners to self-evaluate their knowledge. This paper analyzes the results of over 20,000 pre-university mock online quizzes in the technical drawing subject of the Spanish University Admission Test to assess the impact of (a) the presence of accompanying graphic illustrations and (b) the length of the questions on the questions success and skip rates. The performance difference of the students in two tests 6 years apart and participating in two different intakes is also discussed. The results show that questions with image support receive more successful answers and are skipped less often, while increasing question length have the opposite effect. These findings should help improving the design of online quizzes, including more visual content and/or rephrasing the questions to be more concise.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of digital modeling as dentification instrument of a formal grammar. The identification is developed through the analysis of some furniture, in which it is used a formal grammar identification as a means to find out and generate a project language. This language construction is based on the grammar that generates forms which correspond to the same language, through the recursive application of a set of rules. Thus, the paper tries to identify a specific grammar for the furniture through its digital modeling.

Hereby we present the first results of a Research Funded Project that focuses on the use of SG (Serious Games) with citizen’s participation in urban design projects. After the early trials of HMD devices used by the neighbors in three urban scenarios, the complexity of obtaining results was confirmed due to the system limitations and users’ mistrust in spite of the scenes realism. Therefore, a contingency plan was defined, with a strategic variation, participating in events and expositions with big audience; a monographic hall of the architecture professional environment and an international exposition focused on video games. We were able to validate SG usefulness by testing the new use of HMD (Head Mounted Display) in great public gatherings and also a new interaction methodology through touch screens joined with screenings of great size in a semi immersive environment. By this means the user designs and modifies the scene in third person, navigating through it with the help of a joystick or using HMD as an alternative. The result of the screening has proven to be robust and stable along the time, it is accessible to all types of users and very encouraging. With this installation and the participation of the citizens in our project has increase exponentially, allowing us to validate the agility of itself by having different people playing simultaneously with it and taking data by automatically taking screen captures.

This paper addresses the effect of building orientation efficiency of the green facade in energy consumption, for which the case study is an urban block in Passeig de Gracia, L’Eixample, Barcelona. Nowadays, many countries are faced with the trouble of the deficiency of energy resources and the incapability of saving them. Most of this energy is consumed in the cooling, heating, and artificial ventilation of buildings. For this reason, the development of an integrated strategy like a green facade is essential to transform buildings into structures that consume less energy and to improve the occupants’ comfort conditions. From the perspective of the urban landscape, the green facade can influence the quality of life in cities due to its positive effects such as the purification of air, the absorption of carbon dioxide, and the mitigation of dust, as well as the aesthetic and psychological aspects. Such criteria are based on the adoption of suitable orientation for the green facade, w...

The accuracy of acoustic measurement locations usually demands a correct geometrical description of the studied auditorium. Likewise, for numeric simulations the geometry of the modelled room needs to be available in appropriate detail. Relying on existing architectural drawings of the room is sometimes misleading due to inaccuracies and modifications made to the hall. In this context, photogrammetry can be a useful tool for 3D modelling based on the real scenario. Photogrammetry is a 3D modelling method based on optical information which generates a spatial mesh through triangulation. This technique can provide a user-friendly and suitable way to obtain spatial information of an existing auditorium. Based on this model, it seems obvious to use the spatial information that acoustic applications demand. Nevertheless, despite automation of the process, some challenges remain that may make it difficult to use photogrammetry as a suitable tool for acoustic purposes. The accuracy of the ...

Urban development can have a profound impact on the health and well-being of people, sustainability of cities, increasing energy consumption because of increasing urban heat island (UHI), and CO2 which is one of the environmental and social concerns. The vertical garden, as a second skin on the façade has been analyzed in this paper, is compared using several constructive alternatives in a natural and sustainable way. The main proposal of this study is a second skin (green façade) in an office building in Barcelona, Spain, that is in southwest orientation, which aims to reduce energy consumption as much as possible and improve the urban landscape and pedestrian comfort. Vertical gardens as a second skin are implemented on the building's exterior walls to intercept a quantity of solar radiation towards the vertical building envelope. The methodology is based on the evaluation of various green facade options through simulation of the different sizes of the cavity’s depth with a specific orientation. According to the result of the simulation obtained from Autodesk Green Building Studio, the cavity's depth, and the density of plants (R-Value) are very effective in the performance of the green facade which must be calculated as specified by the building main facade's material and structure, building orientation, the height of the building, and climate. This paper presents a case study that applies this approach to an office building located in Passeig de Gràcia, L’Eixample area in Barcelona.

We present the initial results of the research project MINECO-BIA2016-77464-C2 coordinated by the Barcelona School of Architecture (ETSAB-UPC) and the Architecture Department at La Salle (ARQ-La Salle-URL). The project consists of cross-cutting research at the intersection between computer sciences, the teaching of future architects and multimedia engineers, and urban development policies in cities, in which citizen participation is fundamental. To study the working hypothesis, we identified four areas of action: 1. Focused on training and interaction with architecture students, specifically urbanism students, for the design of urban public spaces. 2. Centred on the training of multimedia engineers who will design and implement gamified processes on information and communication technology (ICT). 3. Focused on students’, professionals’ and citizens’ motivation and degree of satisfaction with the use of ICT. 4. Centred on studying and increasing citizen participation in this type of ...

The paper describes in detail a process of work consisting of merging a virtual model into a real image. This process implies three different kinds of operations: geometric restoration of the real scene, in 3D, from a photograph, rendering a virtual model under similar conditions as the photograph, and merging of the rendered image with the original image. The paper empasises quality and visual precision of results together with a semiautomatization of the entire process. It also refers critically these three different groups of operations to their theoretical background. It concludes with an evaluation of the work from the point of view of architectural visual analysis and from the point of view of architectural visual analysis and from the point of view of a general design methodology.

The constant disappearance of hundreds of roshans, the projected wooden windows, in the historical city of Jeddah is now an established fact. Documentation is a major step towards heritage preservation, whether threatened by man-made or natural factors but no architectural database or measurement records exist due to the absence of specialists and experts. Thus, there is an immediate need for training new technicians and architects who could ensure documentation and conservation of remaining heritage. Thus, we propose a combination of new technologies, flexible, high interconnectivity, and high usability data formats to capture, model, and simulate these elements of heritage interest. For this purpose, an academic experiment involving architecture students from Jeddah was designed. The experiment required students to engage with a new integration of ICT-Hybrid technologies that incorporate dynamic and fast processes for 3D documentation and modeling. In this paper, we evaluate the u...

The aim of this paper is to investigate the thermal performance of vertical gardens by comparing the thermal comfort of bare (glazed) and green façades in the Mediterranean climate. The proposal consists of applying a vegetation layer on a glazed façade that could control solar radiation and reduce indoor air temperatures. This study investigates the thermal performance of green façades of an office building in the Mediterranean climate. For this purpose, the Gas Natural Fenosa Office Building as a case study was simulated, that is located on a site next to the coastline in Barcelona. Dynamic building energy simulation was used to determine and assess indoor thermal conditions and, for this reason, the IES VE as a simulation tool has been utilized. Thermal comfort was assessed through the adaptive comfort approach and results were analyzed and presented in the terms of indoor comfort conditions during occupied hours. As a result, the article shows that applying a green façade as a v...

The creation and usage of serious games on virtual reality (VR) and/or interactive platforms for the teaching of architecture, construction, urban planning, and other derived areas, such as security and risk prevention, require design processes, studies, and research that lead to further consolidation expansion. In that sense, this paper presents two main aims developed: the improvement of a virtual navigation system through the results of previous user studies and mixed research (quantitative and qualitative) improved based on the user perception for educational and professional uses. The VR system used is based on Unreal Engine programming of the HTC Vive sensor. This study is related to the GAME4City 3.0 and a broader project focused on gamified visualization and its educational uses in architectural and urban projects. The results reflect great interest, good usability, and high motivation for further usage for all types of users. However, an apparent resistance to deepen its us...
