This study reflects upon the subject of the first generations of new-christians, with focus
on the town of Coimbra in the first decades of the 16th century. It identifies some of those
families, known to be rich and with privileges and honors of Coimbra “citizens”, which
largely committed themselves to textile commerce and collecting and receiving incomes
belonging to the Crown – as well as other lords. In addition, this paper documents their
residence and housing places. Further, the author identifies certain aspects of the growth
of anti-Semitic sentiment in this town, publishing documentation elements relevant to the
issue at hand.
