ABSTRACT The high penetration of renewable energy resources, such as wind and photovoltaic, as well as the development of power electronics devices play an important role in the development of DC grids. However, the evolution of DC-systems from point-to-point connections to ‘Multi-terminal’ DC (MTDC) networks is not so straight forward. At the current moment there is a large gap in the literature concerning the dynamics, control and operation of MTDC networks. On the other hand, conventional AC networks have been studied exhaustively in the past decades providing for a rich inspiration source. In this paper we are going to establish a comprehensive analogy between the characteristics of conventional AC grids and the emerging DC grids. The key similarities and differences between the two types of grids are identified in an attempt to better understand the characteristics and behavior of DC grids. In the end, the extent to which concepts like planning for operation and control of AC grids can be conveniently extrapolated to DC grids is evaluated.

Tandem conjugate addition of homochiral lithium N-benzyl-N-(α-methyl-p-methoxybenzyl)amide to tert-butyl cinnamate and enolate trapping with TsStBu proceeds with high diastereoselectivity to give a homochiral anti-α-tert-butylthio-β-amino ester. Stepwise deprotection gives the corresponding free α-tert-butylthio-β-amino acid without epimerisation. Tandem conjugate addition of homochiral lithium N-allyl-N-(α-methylbenzyl)amide to tert-butyl cinnamate and enolate trapping with TsStBu followed by conversion of the S-tert-butyl group to a disulphide,

Central intermediate 5 for the taxoid diterpene framework, prepared by the aldol–annulation sequence, permitted the construction of A-secotaxane frameworks incorporating differentiatable olefin and oxygen functionalities suitable for further elaboration. The key BC-subunits 9 and 8 have proven amenable to efficient conversion into both oxa-bridged 7 and its central eight-membered B-ring analogue 6, providing two potential precursors for taxoid construction. The highly diastereoselective anti-aminohydroxylation of (E)-gamma-tri-iso-propylsilyloxy-alpha,beta-unsaturated esters, via conjugate addition of lithium (S)-N-benzyl-N-(alpha-methylbenzyl)amide and subsequent in situ enolate oxidation with (+)-(camphorsulfonyl)oxaziridine, has been used as the key step in the asymmetric synthesis of N,O,O,O-tetra-acetyl d-lyxo-phytosphingosine (20% yield over 7 steps), the anhydrophytosphingosine jaspine B (10% yield over 9 steps), 2-epi-jaspine B (14% yield over 9 steps), and the Prosopis alkaloid deoxoprosophylline (26% yield over 7 steps).

ABSTRACT A bicyclic unsaturated 1,2-diol framework was found to undergo an interesting set of domino reactions on treatment with oxidants. One-pot syntheses of seven-membered-ring-containing frameworks were achieved by a Pb(OAc)4-mediated domino process, while with other oxidants investigated, such as Mn(OAc)3, Dess–Martin periodinane, PhI(OAc)2, Ph3Bi(CO)3, NaIO4, and NaBiO3, the domino process was interrupted halfway through. Finally, tetrapropylammonium perruthenate (TPAP-NMO), Pd(OAc)2, pyridinium dichromate (PDC), and pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) gave only allylic oxidation and further diketone formation without any of the bond cleavage that is necessary to initiate the domino process. The substrates were chosen to test the limits of reactivity of various unsaturated 1,2-diol derivatives and to provide guidelines for their use in constructing complex synthetic targets. In this article we provide details of the reaction conditions, preparation of the starting materials and characterization of the products, along with new, unpublished results. Information is assembled to facilitate comparison between the various oxidants, solvents and substitution patterns. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2005)
